Alex Young..The Golden Vision

Passed away.

You would have to be an old arse like me to have seen him play, but I am sure your dads or elder family members would have spoken of him.

A slim, skillful player who was also great in the air for a not too tall striker

Won a couple of Scottish Leagues with Hearts before signing for us and winning a League title and FA Cup.

You might remember, or have seen  the tv play "The Golden Vision" in the mid 60's- still worth a watch to see how things were then for the younger fans.

Like Ian St John, never got as many Scotland caps as he should ( mainly because the Scottish FA never liked their players moving to England)

Seen him play quite a bit. I went Goodison on our away weeks before I started travelling with Liverpool.

Young was an excellent player. Although my personal favourite Everton player was Roy Vernon, Alex Young was the focal point of their attack in their 1964 title winning year. I was there when they beat Spurs 1-0 in one of those games that practically assured them of the championship, Young scored the goal. A cross from Vernon and Young leaped above a flat footed Spurs defender, John Smith, who was deputising for an injured Danny Blanchflower, and directed the ball into the net. Fucking great goal! I was there when they clinched the league against Fulham as well.

The Blues adored the guy, going to the extent of attacking Harry Catterick after a game at Blackpool for playing a teenage Joe Royal in place of Young. The next home game saw a demonstrator going on the pitch with a placard that called for the sacking of Catterick. The image is on the internet if you wish to view it. The 'bitterness' was always just below the surface with our fellow. citizens.

Over the years Evertonians have given the tag 'legend' to some players who weren't fit to clean this guy's boots. 'Big' Dunc, Andy Johnson, Duncan McKenzie, I even remember a certain Alan Biley being their next big thing when he scored on his debut. Mere jokes; Alex Young was a true star for them and worthy of being hailed as a Merseyside legend.

I'm saddened to hear of his death. Or maybe that's more to do with tonight's result. Whatever, Young adorned the game.
