Maradona,Cruyff and Gerd Muller......Oh sorry you mean former reds players?

Barnes,Heighway and either Rush or Fowler.

Mind you at the moment Michael Robinson or David Hodgson wouldnt be that bad.

John Wark(spoken in a high pitched voice) would be a great low fee signing in this type of team.

I think Kenny sees Adam in this way a little bit.

Alonso? I've heard of 'absence makes the heart grow fonder' but this is getting ridiculous now.

how? don't know about others who've put him but only being 21 he is one of the best players I've seen play for this club and I would also rank him as the 3rd best midfielder in the world so seems a pretty valid choice for me

Couldn't agree more. Souness could pass the ball nearly as well as Alonso, was stronger than Masch in the tackle and could score from midfield on a regular basis. He was a butcher and an artist at the same time. He was like a prime Essien on steroids. Alonso is not even in the same class.

Same must be said regarding Mcmanaman. He'd be one of the best for most clubs, but for LFC he is clearly second level.

Got to agree with most here.

Rush

Barnes

Souness

I often wonder if people saw Souness play the way he is over looked by most. He was fucking immense.

Crap manager and a cunt of a person, but what a fucking player.

It's this sort of revisionism i'm talking about. He's a great player, no doubt, but one of the best to play for the club and the 3rd best in the world? I'm sorry but I just don't see it.

hardly revisionism when I've been saying it for years, fantastic player and as for centre mids there is only Xavi and Iniesta I'd take above him

Seriously? When he was being flogged around europe in 2008 you were saying he is one of the best to ever play for the club?

he had a crap season that year but I was desperate for him to say

at no point have I said he was one of the best to ever play for the club, but in my 21 years and of which I can then only remember to about 97 at the earliest, Alonso is definately one of the best we've had in that time

European Cup Winner, EC Winner, WC winner, integral cog in a team that is close to overtaking what many describe as the greatest ever club side to play the game in their own league. He's hardly a lightweight candidate is he? Personally I don't see many midfielders out there that are better than Xabi. Souness was probably one of the best in the world at his peak too, but to suggest there is a huge gulf in class, I don't see it personally.

Very different players, though, and those picking Souness will probably point to his superior all-round play (including goals/assists). I'd argue that with the way I've set up my team there will be enough production from other areas, but you can never have enough goals I suppose. I think Xabi edges it when it comes to dictating the play though, and while Souness had a powerful boot, I think Xabi has a better range of passing, and he might also clinch it in the tactics department. Moreover, Souness would only play every other game with todays referees:-). I also think Xabi was one of the main reasons why Gerrard was so effective the seasons they played together, so there's that too.

To sum it up, there may have been better (at least more complete) midfielders at the club, but in a game where specialist midfielders tend to be the trend more than "box-to-box" players, I'd say Alonso is a fair shout.

Fair enough, I apologise for misreading your comment.
