Report: Liverpool set to make new Roberto Firmino contract a priority

Roberto Firmino is set to extend his Liverpool career by a further two seasons according to a new report.

Firmino came to the club in the summer of 2015 and is one of the few players remaining in the squad that even predate the Jurgen Klopp era.

In that time, the Brazilian has become a true fan favourite, not just for the goals that he has scored ( 107 in 348 appearances), but in his ability to pressure the opposition and win back possession for his team.

It is a trait not really common with centre forwards and while Firmino certainly has his share of samba flair and technical quality to his game, it is his selflessness and tireless workrate that truly makes him appreciated by fans, teammates and coaches alike.

It appeared that come the end of his current deal that the two parties would split on the very best of terms with a move to the Saudi Arabian league widely speculated.

However, Sky Germany (via Sportsmole) report that Liverpool is very keen to extend the tenure of the 31 year-old until 2025.

When asked after the 1-0 win in the 3rd round FA Cup replay, Klopp was short in his response but to the point saying ‘I said that before – yes, I want to keep him at the club.’

Firmino is currently on the sidelines with a calf injury and Klopp said in the lead up to the Brighton game last weekend that there is no timeline for his return to training after recently suffering a setback.

He was enjoying a very solid season prior to the injury with nine goals in 21 appearances including seven in the league.

While it doesn’t feel like it at the moment with all the injuries, at full strength Liverpool have very impressive depth in the final third.

Being the true team man that he is, the impact of Firmino wont just come from his impact on the pitch, but also nurturing the likes of Darwin Nunez and the versatile Cody Gakpo.

While a evolution to the squad is clearly in the planning, keeping hold of Firmino for a couple more seasons feels like a smart bit of business.

I think that's one Jürgen would be getting right, I think Bobby can contribute as a squad member for a couple more years on the reduced wages he's likely to get.

We're not signing any more attackers this summer so be good to retain him, and allows time for a replacement in a future window once we've sorted the midfield.

The club has to learn from this season and continually evolve now. Over the next few years you will have:

Henderson

Fabinho

Van dijk

Robertson even who will need to be having their replacements being brought in summer by summer

If its a year on a much reduced wage fair enough anything more we ain't learning anything from what this seasons thrown at us. Fucking hell he's injured now and he will be injured a lot more too.

I love Bobby but this will be another wrong move from the club.

Next season we will have Salah, Nunez, Jota, Diaz, Gakpo, Elliott and Carvalho. Unless Klopp has decided that Elliott is a midfielder (which he is not) and Carvalho is not good enough, an extension for Bobby ties up another old player who we cannot sell.  He is 31 and I cannot see him agreeing to any kind of part time deal.

Makes sense to me.

Our money is going to be tied up with the massive job on in midfiled so keeping Firmino to provide depth up front is OK in my book.

He is experienced, obviously knows what we need inside out and pace had never been his thing so him getting on a bit is not a big issue.

He won't start week in week out but he can be useful in cup games, to come on and help give players a rest and as a rotation option or even to throw on if we need something - he is an intelligent footballer who does and can link play well and can still offer us something for a couple of years.

We aren't going to have money to replace him so him staying makes sense.

I love our Bobby but his skill set is diminishing and so are the returns. I would not be against a new deal though, but only so long as the new wage also is diminished accordingly.

Bottom line, Bobby is still a very good player.

Not a good sign.  Firmino has had a few decent games this term, so one could argue it's his best season for years, but no-one realistically expects him to be able to keep that up.  And once Jota is fit, there's no room for this lad.  Jota is better than Firmino at everything Firmino used to be good at.

There is room though, the sport is now a never ending fixture pile up. I look at it similar to Milner, if he's allowed leave what's happens his place in the squad? We're not signing anyone to be our 8th choice midfielder or 7th choice forward so we let them go and Tyler Morton and Kaide Gordon move up the ranks.

If it doesn't complicate things financially then a short deal on lower wages seems ok. The real problem here though is that his injury record has become pretty poor over recent times and we could do without another of those players.

Good news in terms of our strength in depth, given how brittle the new triumvirate of Jota, Diaz and Nunez is proving.

Yet the double edged sword of another ageing player who has recently become injury prone swallowing up part of the budget for younger talent. I'm not sure how to view this especially with talk over extending Milner's contract yet again.

This is madness.  A player, who with very few exceptions, has been utter rubbish for the last two and a half seasons, is getting older, more injury prone and less mobile.  We are wilfully signing away our ability to be a top club.

Great news, and completely unsurprising to anyone that have watched how we've played under Klopp's tenure, not least to Klopp himself.

Bobby's still our best no 9, IF we intend to play Klopp's favoured 4-3-3 with a false 9 and two direct wingers/forwards. Our best line-up is still Mo-Bobby-Diaz/Nunez for what we want our team to do. Makes sense to tie him down. Agree that he probably can't play every game, so hopefully Jota gets his act together and can supplement him in the no 9 role.

As exciting as Nunez can be, I much prefer to keep him on the left until he adapts to our pressing and/or improves his hold-up play. People love to question our midfield (so do I), but it's no surprise that we looked better pressing with Harvey/Carvalho (and Gakpo) than when Nunez and Salah have been lumbering up front. Salah needs a rocket up his arse, his defensive work this season has been shocking.

Bobby has been an outstanding player for this football club and he has the silverware to back it up.

However, it is time for him to leave on a high note playing some good football and everyone remembering the good times.

He was an outstanding player.  I remember it well.  But that was years ago.  I think he could help a championship club like Burnley get promoted if he could get his mojo back.

I assume you've never seen Jota play in that role?  More mobile, more reliable, better at linking the play, and of course, more of an asset in front of goal.  Firmino hasn't been our best number 9 for some years.
