Lucas wants out? Good for him.

Lucas Leiva may have played his last game for the club with reports suggesting he will leave Anfield before the transfer window shuts at the end of this month.

The popular Brazilian failed to even make the 18 man squad for the 1-0 win at Stoke on Sunday and his relationship with manager Brendan Rodgers has been steadily deteriorating over the last 18 months. The player has been unhappy for some time and was looking to leave the club last summer, but interest from Italian clubs failed to materialise into a firm offer so he stayed, albeit reluctantly. Now he may become the next player to leave the team in this 2015-16 season.

He almost left in January too following interest from Inter Milan and with things finally having seemingly now come to a head with Lucas wanting to leave and Liverpool reportedly ‘happy to listen to offers’, the odds on him remaining at Anfield beyond this summer appear to be lengthening by the day.

For some this will provide another stick to beat Rodgers with, but if the Northern Irishman sees the highly promising Emre Can as the long term option for that third midfield spot alongside Jordan Henderson and James Milner then surely that’s understandable? He may be happy to have Lucas in the squad as a back up option but if the player is not willing to accept that role then there’s little a manager can do.

No-one is to blame here as it’s a fairly simple situation. Lucas believes he should be first choice and be in the team every week while Rodgers sees things differently and prefers other players.

At 28 years of age Lucas does not want to be a back up player and in many ways that’s commendable as there are far too many footballers these days happy to pick up wages without earning them. If only Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini and Jose Enrique had his desire to play football every week.

Lucas wants to play football but that’s not going to happen for him at Liverpool barring a midfield injury crisis, so therefore the most logical conclusion is him moving on to a club that see him as first choice. It’s no different to Jay Spearing, Jonjo Shelvey or Charlie Adam leaving. The profile and level of Lucas is obviously higher, but the basic principle is the same. All would prefer to play elsewhere than sit on the bench here.

Some players are happy enough to be squad men, others want to play every week and will not hang around if they aren't. If Lucas has had enough of not being a guaranteed starter then it’s best for all parties if he moves on.

It may also present more opportunities to promising teenager Jordan Rossiter, particularly in the Europa League for example.

This is the best transfer the club will make all summer. Removing this crab as an option means Rodgers won't be tempted to play him in any game. The squad we've got isn't made any worse by this fraud leaving. I actually had a worry he was going to appear in the Stoke game and it was refreshing to see he didn't even make the bench. The club is finally moving on from the dark days of this clown being able to make our first 11 on a regular basis. We've now got 3 strong box to box midfielders each capable of impacting the game at both ends of the pitch and it's the best way of coping with the loss of our greatest ever player.

If you want to cry about him throwing his toys out of the pram because he's getting shut out please do so because it adds to my enjoyment. I hope he stays in the prem though so he can embarrass himself at another club who won't treat him as the emperors new clothes for 8 years.

Christ, you really are a complete and utter bellend, aren't you?

First of all, Lucas is a top fella. He is a good professional and a good character. And who can't love a modern day multi-millionaire footballer who spends his time looking after his ranch in the summer?

When he came to Liverpool we thought we were getting a goalscoring box-to-box type but it didn't turn out that way. I think that's why a lot of fans were slow to see his plus points at first. At his best he was a very good defensive midfielder - never world class, certainly in relation to some of the midfielders we've had over the years, but well worth his place in the side.

As things look today he has had too many injuries. To my eye he is still decent, but just a bit off the pace. He knows where to position himself and so on, but all too often he is just a fraction of a second too late, hence the reputation he is getting for conceding free kicks, sometimes in dangerous places. With the age, the injuries, and the increasing pace and athleticism of the Premier League, I can't see Lucas rectifying this side of his game any time soon.

Arguably he is still worth a place in the squad, but at 28 years old if he wants to play football he should go with our blessing. I'm sure he can do well for an Italian team. Unfortunately we'll get rinsed on the fee as Italian teams would rather give you an IOU than actual cash. Still, for a top man like Lucas we should take it on the chin. Not everything is about wringing the last few shillings out of every situation.

... and for others, it seems to be a licence to heap unnecessary ridicule on Lucas.

The kind of ridicule they might rightly be morally outraged about, if it were being rained on our manager.

He'll be replaced if he goes imo, a journo was saying last night Rodgers has been looking at Carvalho but he's out injured for three months.

If he is going to replace him (which I'm far from convinved about) then looking at an injured Carvalho is totally useless, because it's three months that we and Brendan don't have the luxury of letting pass.

In what way?

In the way he's been used like the fat bird who's a bladdered man's last resort at the end of a night.

We blocked a transfer in January, talked him into staying, and now have left things until any team he might want to go to has already signed someone. For a few windows now he's been considered surplus to requirements, and he's reportedly wanted out, with interest shown from Serie A sides, most notably Inter.

It's clear he isn't in the manager's long term plans, but Allen's cycle of injuries - and our defensive record - has lead to him being brought back into the fold a couple of times, usually just as he's on the verge of a transfer.

We cut Kuyt and Bellamy loose when they wanted first team football, but we slap Lucas and then stroke his face.

I don't think there has ever been a time when he has deserved his place in the team, and our league positions when Lucas has played regularly will confirm this. I'm not sure that he's appreciably worse than he was before his injuries. He does seem like a lovely lad though, and if he goes to get first team football somewhere then good luck to him. He's actually conducted himself with some dignity, which is more than be said for some of his cuntish ex colleagues

Fat bitches need lovin' too. He should be grateful that he's been getting out prestigious length for so long and not had to resort to fucking some fat bloke of his equal like West Ham.

Also, he's under contract so we are entitled to keep him for as long as we value him as is he entitled to stay as long as he likes under the terms of that contract.

Will they? Three seasons under Rodgers. No prizes for guessing in which of the three Lucas had most league appearances.

I heard Brendan stole Lucas's children and put them to work in the teeth factory for a shekel a month.

He's a power mad maniac and it'll all come out one day.

Bad cunt Rodgers - if I saw him I'd probably tut and pout as he walked past.

Be interesting to see what his solution is when we inevitably have that run of games where we concede three in all of them.

Read my mind. Probably banish a non-dm to the bench and make disparaging remarks about them.

You'll miss him when he's gone, when it's just a bunch of selfish twats eyeing moves away the second they have to sit on the bench or players that think they're far too good for us. Players like Lucas are a dying breed.

A player that was hated when he arrived and kept his head down, never said a word about it and won the fans over in time. I don't rate him much as a player, (similar to you stringy) but as a man he's right up there with Sami, Kuyt and Hamann in terms of foreign players that have just got us, the city, the fans, everything.

I hope he gets a boss send off, but Brendan will probably fuck him off on the last day of the transfer window for nothing and he won't have the chance to say goodbye. Has anyone noticed the fact that hardly anyone can last more than 3 years with Brendan?

Just to play devil's advocate, he played more minutes in Rodgers first season in the league (1943 ) than he did in the second season (1871 )

Let me play the Mandelsons advocate. Did Suarez and Gerrard not play more minutes and hence deserve a larger share of the blame?

Who is blaming him? I don't think he's particularly to blame for the finish in the first season in much the same way I don't think he's a big reason we finished second the year after.

There's a comedy piece in The Echo today, preparing the waters for there to be no replacement for him, and at times almost trying to make it sound as though the idea of having a midfielder who keeps the back door locked and the defence protected is some sort of flat-earther archaism.

That said, it's no-one's fault in my book. Superb professional, one of the last of our players I have any sort of attachment to, and I'd happily bet my house he's one of the best people within the club at this time. I'd personally be in favour of keeping him within the squad as an insurance policy in effect, and he's quite right not to accept that, just as Rodgers is not to want him as first-choice.

The issue for me is that Rodgers isn't thinking that for the reasons many of us are - that he needs to be upgraded to a defensive midfielder of a higher class - but that he doesn't believe in the necessity for that type of player, superior version or not. The latter is what concerns me, and what will ultimately be on Rodgers's LFC headstone, in my opinion.

That and "Here lies a shark-faced, terrorist cunt. Good riddance.", obviously.

I hope you're not one of the many posters who berated Borini's decision to stay and fight for his place.

I love Lucas and wish him well. I've never thought he was a good player. Ever. He's just never stood out for me.

You don't need to stand out to be a good player.
