I don’t think Rotherham is too stupid. He knew that talking positively about Corbyn would swing the candidacy for mayor his way. I didn’t mind him for that exact reason but in reality becoming the mayor is the cop out option. It’s given both Burnham and Rotherham a nice little time out where they don’t have to nail their colours to the mast while the direction of the Labour Party is up in the air. He can leave the mud slinging to Jess Phillips, Chuka Umuna and the likes and he doesn’t have to out himself by having to vote in the commons.

 

Being mayor is just another step on the political ladder. I just don’t see how swapping being an MP to being a mayor is anything other than a step down practically to just garner some more fame. Your hands are tied by central govt. it’s just a PR position.
