  1. We are the cruelest, expecting actual compensation for letting him go. This is nothing short of slavery. Fuck off you Saudi cunts. https://www.football365.com/news/liverpool-ruin-henderson-dream-gerrard-floundering-chelsea-demand
  2. No, I wasn't trying to imply that, more just in general: when and how slavery developed. When you listen to the books, there's an inevitable impression that civilization=progress. But that's not always the case, and slavery seems the starkest reminder of that. I'd just like more information on it, and on the negative side of "civilization" in general, which seems to be lacking in the materials I read.
  3. Two books and two lecture series in and I'm fine with the standard version. What struck me this time was the importance of trade throughout the entire process, in almost every region, as a practical necessity, as a stabilizing factor, and in the transference of knowledge and technology. The other thing was the lack of information on slavery: they all mentioned it in passing, but none them dealt with it head on: when it became widespread (if it did), where, why, etc.
  4. People traffickers get free rein; their victims get fuck all protection from slavery. God, I detest racist Tory cunts. https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/4-5-modern-slavery-victims-29859074
  5. Somebody mentioned slavery in a vegetarian thread.
  6. You're missing the fact that Fuge is an idiot/troll/both (delete as appropriate). And that nobody is discussing slavery (although Fuge did try to shoehorn evolution in here, for some reason).
  7. I came to this thread this morning and the discussion was tofu. I come this evening and its slavery.
  8. You do know how analogies work, don't you? The slavery bit isn't supposed to be the relevant bit: it's an illustration of how flawed your logic (assuming that you thought your evolution comment was relevant) is.
  9. About as relevant as a slavery analogy in a vegetarian thread!!!
  10. Maybe; maybe not. https://www.wired.co.uk/article/human-evolution-meat Either way, it's not an argument to continue to eat meat now, any more than the fact that we continue to benefit from things (like many banks, insurance companies hospitals, universities, etc) that owe their existence to slavery is an argument to continue trading slaves.
  11. The Slavery Act was passed back in 1833. He wanted to go. Same as Mane did. I really don't get this idea that a club these days can just order a player to stay, when they are determined to leave, and hold on to them indefinitely and also get great performances from them. And yet it's always 'We made a mistake letting them go'. No we didn't.
  12. Ever seen the documentary "13th"? It's a bit of an eye-opener (at least it was for me) about how the prison system has been used to continue slavery.
  13. Shameful. Modern slavery laws won’t apply to people who’ve entered the country ‘illegally’ - so in effect the government has just effectively legalised certain cases of slavery. Also, if anything it probably also encourages traffickers as much as it will deter migrants. I really want this to be the drain that’s being circled before this ideology is booted right in the cunt and fucked off into the bin, but there’s probably new depths to plumb isn’t there? Fucking hell, parliament today was like a scene out of the pre-Kristallnacht Reichstag.
  14. Thats a very good comparison. That flag and the Stars and Stripes. Who gave the confederate flag the negative image? It surely was not the Southern States who use it as a flag of Independence and would not want it seen as pro slavery and white power. I suppose when the nutters start flying it, like the UJ SG Cross they take ownership.
  15. I don’t follow this line of reasoning that says drag has been around for centuries so that makes it alright. Presumably lynching and slavery are also ok ? Female emancipation is a relatively recent phenomenon so it’s no surprise that the old means of cultural oppression are now coming under scrutiny. To my mind, drag acts are offensive. They are caricaturing and exaggerating female sexuality, appearance and mannerisms in a spiteful manner that is degrading to women and full of hate. Real women like your wife, daughter, mum don’t look or behave like drag acts, it’s a personification of suppressed male fear of female sexuality. This is why drag acts often have overtly sexual names and base their act on women being either overly promiscuous (Lilly Savage) or sexually repressed ((Les Dawson). There’s no celebration of women’s achievements in a drag act just men punching down on an historically oppressed group who have only recently achieved equality. I’m amazed that apparently liberal people can’t see it.
  16. This load of shit below you just invented to try and help you 'win the internet' today. It's an offensive, racist word. So fucking what if it gets removed from a fictional spy novel. It literally doesn't impact anyone by being removed. Just an excuse for the anti-woke brigade to get their shitty knickers in a twist. "So - lets say you win on the internet today - we remove the N word from an obscure book in an instance where no one ( it's fiction) is actaully called that. The flip side is the banning of complete books about slavery, about the gay rights movement etc."
  17. So, um, no one is fuming. Pointing out censorship is inherently dangerous is not fuming. So - lets say you win on the internet today - we remove the N word from an obscure book in an instance where no one ( it's fiction) is actaully called that. The flip side is the banning of complete books about slavery, about the gay rights movement etc. You do get that yea?
  18. Excuse my ignorance but I do struggle with what is considered racist language. Watching Narcos and every other word is 'Gringo' not in the slightest bit offensive even though it is used is a sense that suggests inferiority or injustice or colonialism all of which are fair points I guess. Brits, Scots, Micks, Paddys, Yanks, Jerry, Aussie, Ruskie, Wetback, Frogs, Greaseballs, etc are often used terms to describe national identity. While some are obviously closer to the edge than others I don't think any are considered intrinsically racist. Context is obviously massively important. I appreciate the P word or the Ch**k word used to describe people of Pakistani or Chinese ethnicity are offensive to people of that ethnicity and that is enough to forbid it but I wonder where the line is drawn. Obviously the N word is hugely offensive and goes far beyond race to include slavery and worthlessness etc. But with that in mind can calling someone a Scot or a yank be considered offensive if the target deems it so? Tricky subject and not intended to offend anyone just an honest question on the intricacies of language.
  19. They probably already own more of London and parts of British industry contracts than the Ruskies ever did so I have to disagree. It's all about nullifying the attention of the decadent West on what goes on in their region, from human rights, slavery, mysogyny etc, etc in my opinion.
  20. It's to get the gullible on side saying 'I dont care about the human rights issues or the sportswashing etc, it means my club can compete on level terms with the rest of the odious sports washed clubs and sports.' Meanwhile, the human rights abuse, slavery etc continues unabated while fans celebrate goals and complain not enough has been spent on the latest next big name in the game.
  21. Literally nobody, in any country, is suggesting that a field shouldn't be called a field. "Fieldwork" (which has got nothing to do with any lea or meadow) has echoes of various terms with baggage from the era of slavery. If a university in the USA wants to have an internal debate about that, let them.
  22. Great investigative journalism from a subscriber funded online news site from Bristol, The Cable. Exposed modern day slavery practiced by a family running the city’s ice cream vans, and their multi million pound property empire that was often substandard. https://thebristolcable.org/2019/05/finally-exposed-how-lopresti-ice-cream-boss-kept-men-in-slave-like-conditions-tenants-and-families-in-squalor-but-people-spoke-out/
  23. "Allow me to make a case for: modern slavery, wrongful arrests and imprisonment, the systematic torture of detainees, enforced disappearances, extra-judicial killings, decapitation, homophobia, misogyny and despotism..."
