If anyone uses AstraWeb for there UseNet provider then I've got some good news for yers...

I've just bought an 180g bundle for $25 (16 quid), I checked my bank account & was billed $25 via PayPal, but when I checked my AstraWeb account they've doubled the bundle to 360g by mistake.

What do I need to use to get the files in the correct format?

Been quite a while since I used newzbin. About 6 years I think.

Typically you'd use WinZip/WinRaR or equivalent software to extract the files & maybe something I think is called "par2" to repair any possible corrupt compressed files too.

You'll need a news reader, AltBinz. You'll also need a Newsgroup server to download the files. If you're with Virgin Media, then you can use theirs, it's free but only has a limited retention period.

Once you've downloaded AltBinz, you'll need to add the Newsgroup server to the connections area in the set-up.

The post from Odris back on the first page is helpful for new starters. (Forget the Merlin's Portal reference, as it is dead).

Firstly download Alt.Binz

alt.binz | Usenet progy

That will be used to download the files.

Then you need a place to get the files (NZBs), i strongly recommend Merlins Portal (requires registration).

Merlin's Portal - Powered by It's Member's For It's Member's

Now, when you have opened up Alt.Binz in the setting option (think it pops up when you first install), create a new server using the address news.virginmedia.com and use port 119 and in the "connections" area type "20". (Ps. you don't have to enter any password so leave that bit un-ticked).

When you have found the file you want, for example on merlins portal you find the file you want and click the "Thanks" button at the bottom right of the posters post, then refresh the thread and a download link will appear. By the way i forgot to say you need to download WinRar...

WinRAR download and support. WinRAR is a powerful Windows tool to compress and decompress zip, rar and many other formats: Download now

Now extract the file that opens in WinRar, do this by right clicking the file name and then click "Extract to specified folder". You can save this to the desktop.

After that open up AltBinz and click the NZB option (has a green arrow pointing down) and it will open up a box to locate the file you saved to the desktop. After opening it click the "Connect" button in the top left and your download should start.

If the file is over 7 days old it won't work. Depending on what connection you have the speed will be better (obviously). For 10mb connection you can download a typical 700mb movie in say 10-15mins and so on.

Hope this helps you mate.

Use SabNZB and it automates all of this for you.

SABnzbd.org : Home of SABnzbd+, the Full-Auto Newsreader

You can then set up sickbeard and couchpotato to auto download tv and films as soon as they are available.

Use SabNZBd. It is boss. Also use Tweaknews for provider. Get the free trial first then they will send you cheaper offers.

I got that but it appears to be impossible to use. I have AltBinz and ForteAgent. I am signed up with GingaDaddy and Astraweb.

Altbinz looks more user friendly but I cant get the fucker to work or SabNZBd.

Sabnzbd is not difficult and it is so easy when set up. No pissing around with extracting and PAR files etc. It runs in your browser.

Couchpotato / sickbeard are great as well. You can just type in the name of a film and it will search for you and download when it is available in the quality you want. They also run in the browser.

Here is a decent guide (ignore the media player advice)
