I like Ox more than most probably do. I feel strangely protective towards him and will usually want to defend him when the criticism is flying his way. I’m not sure why I feel that way. It might be because he’s such a personable lad and always comes across well in any media the club put out, while it’s also because of how good he was before he picked up that cruel injury against Roma. Some say he’s never been the same since that injury but I don’t see it that way at all. The injury itself hasn’t damaged him and he’s fully recovered from that. It’s the time he spent out of the team and the fact he’s never really been able to get that kind of run in his favoured…

I think he was probably our best player this season you know. He hasn’t been making countless camera saves every game, but as I've said before Alisson so good that he’s made me completely reassess how I view goalkeepers. It's not about making brilliant saves all the time. It's kind of like defenders with last ditch sliding tackles. The truly special ones don't need to do that too often because their anticipation, positional play and fundamentals are so sound they rarely have to. Hansen and Van Dijk would very rarely ever have to make a slide tackle, and Alisson doesn't often have to show off his acrobatic skills. I’ll give you an example. Look at J…

Robbo had a slowish start to the season and seemed a little fatigued. No wonder. He ran himself ragged for us the previous season and then had to go and lead Scotland in the Euros. He picked up a knock in pre-season too and was only on the bench for the season opener. When he came back into the side he was just a little off. His crossing wasn’t what we’ve come to expect and I can recall discussions on the forum about whether he should be benched for the in form Tsimikas. I never got to that stage because it’s Andy Robbo, he’s a machine and any slight dip in form was never going to last. And it didn’t. Robbo was brilliant again even if it doesn’t r…

A bit more difficult to grade this lad because he hasn’t played too many games. When he did play he was extremely dependable though. Klopp described him as the “best back up keeper in world football”, something which clearly seemed to get under the skin of Pep Guardiola who sarcastically referenced it a couple of months later. I’m fairly sure he isn’t the best back up keeper in world football but nevertheless he’s very good. So much so that any time I see a team sheet without Alisson, as long as it’s Kelleher there in his place I’m very relaxed about it. Is he as good as Alisson? Of course not, but he’s done well enough to earn the trust of Klopp, his team-mat…

I expected more from Curtis this season. His ceiling is so high that one day I expect him to be one of the best players in the league. I thought we’d start to see it this season but I guess it’s going to take a while longer. One goal is a terrible return for a player of his talent. I’d say that overall he’s been decent if you look at it in context. That tends to not happen very often though as this team is so great and has so many world class players that we expect everyone to be able to perform to that level, and those who don't are judged more harshly. It's easy to overlook the fact that he's a young lad with not much experience, trying to hold his own in th…

He’s a weird one isn’t he? He scores goals and when he’s on his game his performances are top quality too. But those top performances aren’t that frequent even if the goals are. His form in the second part of the season wasn’t great at all and eventually the goals dried up too. It could be that he just never regained his top form after an injury he picked up, but I think it may have more to do with the arrival of Luis Diaz and the successful adaption to the false nine role by Sadio Mané. He had time to get his sharpness back after the injury but he was never able to get a run of games to do it because others were in better form. Jota just found it…

Jurgen Klopp often says that he should have played Origi far more than he has, and that’s definitely true. He should have started more games but you can see how difficult that is with the players he has ahead of him. Why he hasn’t been brought off the bench more is the question I would ask. When he plays, he scores. He might not do much else and that’s why he’s always behind the other forwards we have, but I know one thing; if we go into the last ten minutes of a game needing a goal there is nobody - literally nobody - I’d rather have on the pitch in those closing stages. When we drew with Spurs at Anfield Origi was left kicking his heels on the be…

Spoiler alert. I gave him an 8. Am I under selling him a little here? I love Fabinho and think he’s brilliant. I would say that he had an excellent season yet I don’t think he’s been at his absolute best as consistently as I’ve come to expect. Maybe I’m just starting to take him for granted a bit? I think the reason I’m not going higher is because it feels like there have been a handful of games where he’s actually been really bad. It isn’t the norm and those are isolated games, but Fab seems to be one of those players who when he’s bad, he’s terrible. It doesn’t happen often and most of the time he’s great, but when he isn’t….. Off the top of my …

This season feels like a tale of what might have been for Harvey. That horrible injury he picked up away at Leeds in September robbed us of what was shaping up to be one hell of an exciting season from the kid. It’s crazy to think now, but he actually started the season as first choice and he was keeping out Hendo and Thiago. Of course the main reason for that was he had taken part in the full pre-season whereas the senior players were still playing catch up on fitness, but even so, it was still quite the vote of confidence when Harvey started against Chelsea. I can recall being quite shocked by that and it's definitely worth remembering the belief Klopp had …

Not quite as impressive as Virg and Matip but not far off it, and considering his age and the fact he’s new to the club that’s pretty remarkable. Konate is way better than I expected him to be. I didn’t think he’d play that much in his first season but he looked impressive right from the start and he just got better and better as the season went on. There were one or two mistakes early on, nothing too glaring and completely understandable given his situation. Centre backs aren’t fully matured until they reach their late twenties, so a 22 year old in a new league, with new team-mates, is always going to have the odd dodgy moment. They were few and far between t…

I feel sorry for Joe. He’s hardly been able to get any playing time in his favoured position in the centre alongside Virgil. Remember how good he was in the title winning season when he had an extended run there? He looked like he was on the brink of becoming world class. Since then injuries have completely stunted his growth as a player. He was fit for most of the season but he couldn’t get back in because Joel suddenly turned into freaking Iron Man and never missed a game. In previous seasons there would always be opportunities for games alongside Virgil because none of the others could ever stay for any length of time. Now none of them ever get injured. …

Along with Virgil I’m probably Joel’s number one fan and have been for years. No-one loves him more than me, not even his own wife. I’ve said on numerous occasions he’s the best centre back in the world not named Van Dijk but I am definitely biased. He’s just great though isn’t he? For the first half of the season I think he was our best centre half, but as the season wore on normal service was resumed and Virg became the top man again. Even I'll concede that. Joel has had to split his playing time with Ibou Konate which may have been a little frustrating for him at times but probably contributed to him going through the entire season injury free. Imagine that…

Another rock solid season from the skipper, who bizarrely still seems to be not fully appreciated by some of our fanbase. I say that only because of some of the crazy stuff I see written about him on social media. At Anfield it’s a completely different story, there’s never any sense of the crowd doubting him but then I’ll fire up Twitter on the way home and see loads of complaining about him. I don’t get it at all. He’s a fantastic captain and a top player but he is no longer always a guaranteed starter and there were times when he was overlooked for big games the season just gone. Not just because of the normal rotation either. He plays far more often than he…

His story begins back at the start of the season when he really still had quite a bit to prove as, let’s face it, last season was basically a write off for poor Kostas. He barely played and could never really show the fans what he could do, not least because we weren’t allowed in the stadiums to watch. He had COVID and from what I recall an injury or two as well. Then we lost all of our centre backs so Klopp made the decision to run Trent and Robbo into the ground because he didn’t want to make any more defensive changes. The net result was none of us really knew if Kostas was any good or not. So pre-season comes around and Robbo isn’t there after captaining S…

What a signing. He might be my favourite player already as I am a sucker for a South American named Luis. He reminds me of Suarez actually, even though he’s a very different type of player. Their styles are not alike but the way they play the game is. With some players you’d say they play with hunger. Suarez and Diaz don’t seem hungry, they seem absolutely starving. Diaz is a fighter without actually, literally fighting, if that makes sense. He isn’t aggressive and I can’t recall seeing him squaring up to anyone. We’ve seen none of the shenanigans we saw from Suarez so far either, but he’s definitely scrappy and has that ‘street player’ attitude. …

Up until January Mo was unbelievable. Some of the goals he scored were out of this world. The one against City at Anfield might be goal of the season. The one he scored not long after at Watford might have been even better but didn’t have the same gravitas because of the opponent. He was on an absolute tear though until AFCON derailed him. Since then the goals have dried up, which is a shame because he was on course to break all kinds of records. There was actually a brief time when I was wondering if I needed to rethink my take that Luis Suarez is the best player I've ever seen in the famous Red. I'm no longer wondering about that, which is a shame. …

This was undoubtedly Naby's best season for the club, which is damning with feint praise as it's not exactly a high bar he had to jump over. His improved consistency this year was surely not unrelated to the fact it was also the best year he had for avoiding injury, although he still had a couple of brief spells on the sidelines. He started the season well and scored cracking volleys against Palace and Atletico, before finding the net in a terrific individual and team performance at Old Trafford. That might be the best game he’s played for us. He got injured in the next game though and missed a month, which has been the story of his time here really. …

Really difficult one to grade this is, because I feel like Bobby has had a bit of resurgence this year and yet he didn't really have much of an impact on our season. The problem is that it’s been very much stop start as he’s begun to pick up injuries, which was very much unlike him. Have all those games he’s played in recent years caught up with him? Can the guy who fixed Joel do the same for Bobby? Will he even be here next season? There is a lot of uncertainty with Firmino at the moment. I don’t know what the club will do about his contract situation and I don’t really have an opinion on what they should do. The big criticism of Bobby was him no…

I know I often remark that "last season doesn't count" and I firmly believe that. It should be ignored as being completely irrelevant to any kind of judgement making and nothing proves that more than Sadio Mané. Actually that's not true. Our home record is a more compelling case s to why last season should be disregarded. No defeats at Anfield in five years with fans in the stadium, but we lost six on the spin when it was empty. Shit, even Everton won at Anfield when there were no fans there. The form of Sadio Mané last year is another good example of why football without fans really isn't like proper football and therefore we just make any judgeme…

He scored 10 goals and only started nine games. He’s a big reason why we have two more domestic cups on the Champions Wall. Whatsmore, when he was brought in from the cold against Southampton in a must win league game, he delivered for us again with the opening goal. He’s a terrific little footballer who took advantage of the limited chances that were given to him and he probably deserved to play more. I understand why he didn't, as he's got world class players ahead of him, but Minamino is good enough to have been a Liverpool regular. Just not in this era. Other than Origi, he might just be the most clinical forward we had. He rarely misses, altho…

He was our best midfielder this season just gone and the only thing stopping me giving a perfect ten was the amount of games he missed. It probably isn’t that many in reality but it sure feels like it, because even two weeks without Thiago feels like a lifetime. I want him on the pitch all the time and even when he’s subbed to keep him fresh I just feel a massive sense of disappointment that he’s leaving the field. Watching Thiago is an experience all of itself. There are some players who are just different. You find your eyes drawn to them more than the others. Barnes, Alonso, Molby, Suarez, Thiago etc. Just players who are mesmeric with what they do. As I s…

Another great season from the best right back on the planet. It’s incredible that there are those who doubt him and still question his defensive qualities. Trent defends really well. It’s just that he’s out of this world in the attacking side of the game and when you’re that good going forward there’s always a lazy narrative that follows you around. Every attacking full back gets saddled with it and any defensive mistake is highlighted as evidence that “see, he can’t defend”. Newsflash; full backs who are crap going forward also occasionally make mistakes or will allow crosses to come in too easily. It’s part of being a full back. Sometimes a winger will go p…

Spoiler alert: I'm giving Virgil maximum marks. This probably needs some explaining as his performances over the course of the entire season are more like a nine than a perfect ten. His form in the first four or five months wasn’t at the same level as it was in the final four or five months. There is of course a very good reason for that. He wasn’t even really supposed to be in the team for opening day but he returned from that horrific injury ahead of schedule. So he wasn’t Virgil Van Dijk to begin with, but he was still better than 99% of the other centre backs in the league. Only his partner performed at a higher level, although if I take off my re…

We've been otherwise occupied this week, but I think it's time to have a thread about next Tuesday. Here's a really good piece by Matthew Norman from today's Telegraph to kick things off: We all share in the shame of Hillsborough Twenty-five years on, we must not forget the disgraceful treatment of the city of Liverpool and its people The specific depiction of Liverpool fans in the Leppings Lane end as inhuman beasts begs questions Photo: PA By Matthew Norman 7:49PM BST 11 Apr 2014 In death, the victims of Hillsborough never walk alone, and so it is that this weekend we honour their memory with delayed kick-offs, impeccably observed minutes of silenc…
