Suarez: "Gerrard convinced me to stay"

Luis Suarez is back in Uruguay, which means two things: Him doing interviews, and his team-mates talking about his future.

Whilst motormouth Edinson Cavani once again suggested that his strike partner's future lies away from Anfield, Suarez himself insists that he's now 'calmer' and more in control of himself on the pitch, and that skipper Steven Gerrard played a big part in 'his' decision to stay.

“Gerrard, for me, is a legend in Liverpool and a great team-mate that helped me a lot" said the striker. "His attitude was an extra boost for me to take the decision to stay in Liverpool -- both he and the fans of Liverpool influenced much for that."

“I admire him for the great player he is worldwide. For me he will always be a benchmark and at club level he is the best player I have played with in my career, as a person and as a footballer.”

So there you have it, it was Steven Gerrard and the fans that convinced him to stay, the club's point blank refusal to entertain any offers for him, particularly those from Arsenal, obviously had nothing to do with it. . .

Suarez has scored three goals in three games since his return from suspension, and just as significantly he has not been involved in any flashpoints and - fingers crossed - has appeared to be a lot less, shall we say, highly strung, a point he was keen to stress to the Uruguayan media: “I am aware that in recent matches that I played I've been calmer,” he said. “I am very self-critical and I realised that playing well, with more tranquility, is helping me a lot. I realise and I prefer to continue and not be the same as before.”

I can't help but love Luis. I fucking love watching him play football.

As for the article, is something missing? It's unusual to see it end with a quote instead of your own words, Dave? I get the same when I 'click to view the article'.

No, nothing missing.  It's not an article as such, it's just a news snippet of what he said.  I'm trying to use two or three of these kind of pieces a day to keep discussion going on the forum as it's been dead quiet on here since the move.

Really is just a hired gun now in my eyes. I love him as much as ever when he's on the pitch scoring goals for us. I no longer give a fuck outside of that.

Wonder who we're going to spend his sale money on next year though.

It's daft to think he or any other player that wasn't born into the club is any more than a hired gun.

I love him cause he;s an amazing gun & the money will be no doubt spent on a water pistol compared to him.

This reminds me of the joke where the guy says he just broke up with girlfriend. "Yeah", he says, "she moved in with another guy. I draw the line at that."

You're in control, Luis.

The match report from the weekend made an excellent point about Suarez bringing his newly born child out on the pitch dressed in LFC gear. He's fucking shameless but also a world class footballer.

Don't really buy into the idea that any player who wasn't born into the club is a hired gun, lads like Hyypia and Hamann weren't and it was obvious what kind of men they were. Suarez has always been a gobby, moaning shit and an obvious lunatic who's only arsed about number one. Torres shocked me, I never saw that coming but in fairness he's obviously lost the footballing plot for good anyway so who gives a fuck.

Suarez Is a tool to do a job, that's all I view him as, baffled how anyone could 'love' him after he whored himself out and has only 'settled' for playing here because his agent is a spaz and he needs a second bite of the cherry at working in a getout clause.

I'm a Suarez apologist. But I wish he'd stop talking to the press every time he goes back home. Looks like he didn't even make it out of the airport this time before talking to the media in a conference.

I mostly agree, though there are exceptions to the rule. Not many, but there are a few.

Convinced him to stay ?? he's still here because the owners pointed out to him that he would be doing exaxctly what they wanted him to do regardless of how many times he was courted by a known peadophile.

Hmmm, only at club level Luis? So, Forlan is better?

Imagine if Suarez came and played with Stevie 4 years ago, now that was something to admire.

It's standard club rhetoric to big Gerrard up, sometimes I don't think it does him or us any good at age 33. Sure, say the word 'legend' as many times as you like though, that's different.
