Lijnders: We should not judge Darwin on goals alone

Pep Lijnders has produced a staunch defence of Darwin Nunez ahead of Liverpool’s Carabao Cup clash with West Ham at Anfield on Wednesday evening.

The Uruguayan striker has not scored in his past 10 appearances for the Reds with his last goal coming in this competition against Bournemouth at the start of November while his last league goal came against Nottingham Forest on the 25th of October.

Despite the lack of goals, Lijnders says that Darwin is more than playing his role in the side as ESPN reported.

“Darwin is full of desire, you see this in each game.

“If we only would judge players on the goals this would be so unfair because in our way, always when we reach our targets or when we were there to compete, it's always about the collective.”

As well as his four goals in the league, Nunez has also contributed five assists which sees him just two behind joint leader Mo Salah in that category. Compare that to last year where he had three for the entire campaign.

The assistant manager says that is a sign of the improvement in the all-round game of Nunez.

“I feel above everything that Darwin is playing a much better season than last year. The way how he defends for the team... how he controls the centre [of the pitch] and at the same time put pressure [on].

“He helps us a lot when we are deep and we can play with him as a reference, he does that much better."

“(And) I Feel There's a good connection between (Mohamed Salah) and Darwin for example, the way they see each other, assist each other.

One thing you certainly cannot say of the 24 year-old is that he hides on the pitch.

No one has hit the woodwork more (five) and only Erling Haaland (17) has missed more big chances than Nunez (15). While both stats can be used as a negative by his detractors to question why he is not putting those chances away, the positive is that he is actually putting himself in the right positions.

Lijnders believes the tide will turn for him in the near future.

"He's learning. We have this discussion often: this guy is full of fire and that's what our stadium likes. That's what we need as well to lead the line in this way. He can only get better and as always with goals, if you create a lot, the goals will come naturally,

"He feels our trust, that's the thing that we can give him. Like I said, If you were not creating [chances] that would be much worse."

It's almost as if this fella knows the job the staff asks the players to do. Imagine knowing more than internet strangers. It's almost unheard of!

It's a forum. How many people call pickford shite.. he's a premier league goalkeeper and his countries number one. Its all relative to the soap opera of football. Ljinders knows infinitely more about football than I do yet I still question his very existence. Very few people on here are qualified to talk about almost anything we do like we are experts. On the GF you'd think we had economists, physicists, energy experts, geologists, politicians, Brad Pitts and God knows what else.

It was only a few days ago that Klopp said he needs to score more goals.

Even when management are criticising one of their own players it's rare they'll do it by name and instead, as with last season, just refer to a nebulous group and general traits they need to improve.

You'll struggle to find a manager, or coach, especially as part of Klopp's group, who will single out an individual or give a completely honest assessment.

Besides, I'm not sure he runs around a lot and is really enthusiastic, or Klopps comments that he stays in the game and is positive are that glowing or where they thought he'd be 18 months in.

At some point we have to see him come good not just keep being told he will in the future.

What's he going to say

Fuck me we spent huge sums on a guy that whilst he improved can't hit the target

I'd love for the guy to be good. But so far he has looked a poor signing, especially for the fee involved. Forget the pisstaking music, them misses are near inexcusable, especially the amount.

If that Danish kid at the mancs was missing them, people on here would be howling at the fee and calling him shite

I said this own the Nunez thread the other day and @Creator Supreme and @3 Stacks accused me of chatting shit.

I regularly chat shit to be fair but on this occasion I was spot on. We don't set up for a prolific number 9.

Right, the point of signing of Nunez was to have him be Jordan Ayew and be a nuisance rather than to score lots of goals. Spot on.

Mate, you hunt people around the forum when they chat even half the shite you have about Nunez.

You're gonna pretend like the point of signing Nunez wasn't for him to be really prolific? He was always supposed to be Bobby Firmino #2 who does more than score and assist?

Fuck off.

You know exactly how ridiculous you sound on this topic.

And arguing with you about anything is a waste of time and a guarantee of talking to a wall for countless hours.

By saying that his work rate is good, he drags defenders and shouldn't just be judged on goals alone? Yeah sound.

It's gone from, collectively, that he's going to be an amazing world class player with loads of world class attributes ho's going to score 20-30 goals a season to he doesn't need to score goals and doesn't need to be exceptional in lots of different things because we didn't buy him for that anyway.

Quite the come down and lack of faith after only 18 months.
