PODCAST: The inquest into what happened with the officials at Spurs

As the dust begins to settle on what happened at Spurs yesterday and new information has come to light on why exactly the Luis Diaz goal was not allowed to stand, we felt we needed to do a follow up to the post match pod.

TLW Editor Dave Usher is joined by Ian Brown and Stu Montagu to unpack everything that has happened since the game.

Reminds me of Red Dwarf.

Brownie and LFC: Let's hit them with a strongly worded statement and follow it up with a leaflet campaign.

Seems to me that statement is the club taking back a bit of control that th referees have exerted over us since last season.

We have the initiative now and can't let go.

I actually like that club statement because it's keeping the discussing going, doesn't use any phrasing directly pointing the finger at PGMOL individuals, mentions that human error is still part of the game, talks about the impact of things like this on ALL clubs, and emphasises the need for an effective process to avoid repetition and ensure accountability.

It's also saying that an apology is not enough. Reading between the lines, you could even suggest that it's saying we are not going to be vindictive here, but any response by PGMOL that continues to screw us over will be seen as a wilful act based on incompetence or corruption or both, and will highlight that PGMOL cannot be trusted to put proper processes in place or learn from their own mistakes. Maybe I'm reading more into it, who knows.

If Howard Webb turns up at the Axa to apologise, he should be served a breakfast of beans. Just beans. Cold beans. And then told to fuck off back to Carrington.

Why would we spoil him? Serve him a fry up without beans, and he'll be begging for forgiveness in 5 seconds flat.

On the point of the referee choosing to issue a second yellow - he chose to issue a second yellow to Jota. At the same time, Udogie, on a yellow himself, was waving an imaginary card, also a second yellow card offence. The ref chose to ignore it.

I agree, they were out to screw us.

Can you imagine if FSG paid those same VAR twats to go to Fenway Park and officiate in a few major league soccer games, do you think people over here would be OK with it ?

It's scandalous what is happening and we need to kick up a big fuss about it.

Liverpool Football Club acknowledges PGMOL’s admission of their failures last night. It is clear that the correct application of the laws of the game did not occur, resulting in sporting integrity being undermined.

We fully accept the pressures that match officials work under but these pressures are supposed to be alleviated, not exacerbated, by the existence and implementation of VAR.

It is therefore unsatisfactory that sufficient time was not afforded to allow the correct decision to be made and that there was no subsequent intervention.

That such failings have already been categorised as “significant human error” is also unacceptable. Any and all outcomes should be established only by the review and with full transparency.

This is vital for the reliability of future decision-making as it applies to all clubs with learnings being used to make improvements to processes in order to ensure this kind of situation cannot occur again.

In the meantime, we will explore the range of options available, given the clear need for escalation and resolution.

Is it worth me listening to the first pod or should I just skip to this one?

Start with the one where we agreed a fee for Caicedo and take it from there.

Skip to this. You don't want to miss out on Usher waxing (no pun intended) lyrical about Manscaped UK.

The Gomez non-penalty was as blatant an error (aside from the offside) in the game. Of the subjective decisions taken during the game, this was the worst in my opinion. It was a clear penalty.

Normally I would blame the ref and say that if he had given it, that VAR would not have overturned his decision. However, do we really believe that now?

Always been a big fan of Ange, but to use another cricket phrase, he played a very straight bat to all that...and almost too much so. At the very least, he should be having a word to his players about their post-match antics. Embarrassing stuff.

Never seen a Mankad in 25 years of playing either, Brownie!

I'm not getting the shite Spurs are taking here. Despite the big 4 and 6 narrative, they are big club in name only, they're a club that hasn't experienced success in donkeys years. Beating us in injury time is a big fucking deal. Let them have their fun before reality bites in the next 6 weeks.

It seems modern day rules like the one where Jota was sent off and the one for dissent just give referees more excuses to penalise players when the last thing these fuckers need whether they’re incompetent or corrupt is more ways they can influence a game.

He was involved in that embarrassing stuff, walking around on the pitch like a bellend.

He should have been embarrassed, instead he was milking it.

It's the biggest job he's ever had. It's the biggest result he's ever had. Against a team he's revered his entire life. In a huge stadium he's worked all his life and never thought he'd get a chance to get a 'result' like it in. And he's probably got a bit carried away. It is a bit small time and a bit Moyes at man Utd but I don't begrudge him that. If anything it's just a sign of where they are and who they are v where we are. Let them have the praise, reality will set in pretty soon (refs notwithstanding)

I actually think they're in with a good chance of 4th, but a very distant fourth behind 3rd place Arsenal.

To be fair, I didn't see that. Only clips of the players.

You're right, he should be embarrassed, in that case.

Klopp took the team down to the Kop to celebrate a 2-2 draw with WBA.  It was laughed at by many but it was the start of something special.  It really is no concern of ours, I've no idea why a big deal is being made out of what Tottenham done after the game.
