Stone Cold Stunner as Reds target Austin?

Liverpool have reportedly been in contact with the representatives of in demand QPR striker Charlie Austin.

The former Swindon Town and Burnley man is also said to be interesting Chelsea who are on the lookout for a back up frontman to replace the departing Didier Drogba, while Southampton, Newcastle and Aston Villa remain keen on the £15m rated poacher who bagged 18 goals in his debut Premier League campaign this year.

The link with Austin and the Reds has been around for a few months and initially it appeared to lack any real foundation. It’s gotten stronger recently and clearly it’s coming from somewhere. A lot of it seems to be coming out of the North East so perhaps QPR are trying to force the hand of Newcastle - who have made him their number one target this summer - by throwing Liverpool’s name into the mix?

Alternatively it might be the Reds allowing themselves to be linked with Austin to show their main target Christian Benteke that they have other options if he doesn’t try to get Villa to lower their asking price. Most likely it’s the player’s agent trying to drum up more interest, but unlikely as it initially seems, perhaps the Reds genuinely do want Austin? He would certainly be in keeping with the 'buy British' nature of this summer’s business to date.

While a move for Austin's former team-mate Danny Ings didn’t exactly set the pulses racing, there was solid logic behind it as Ings is young, out of contract (and available for a low fee) and his all action style seems a good fit for how Brendan Rodgers likes his strikers to play. Austin on the other hand ticks none of those boxes. He’s 26 years old next month, he won’t come cheap and while he is certainly a goalscorer, he’s a penalty box striker and would have to adapt his game considerably to lead the line for this Liverpool team.

Normally you could file this one away under “tabloid nonsense” but the way Liverpool have conducted their transfer business in recent years would a move for Austin actually be that surprising?

It's not inconceivable that next year we'd start the season with the below XI.

----------------Ings-------Austin--------------

Lallana----------------------------------Milner

--------------Allen------Henderson-----------

Moreno-----Lovren-----Skrtel---------Clyne

-------------------Mignolet--------------------

We have truly become Aston Villa.

A shiver just ran down my spine.

Jermaine_Pennant's too, but his was the result of an orgasm.

That's not a Liverpool team, is it? TLW era's worst XI would probably be more entertaining to watch I'd say.

Sickening.

I keep trying to convince myself that the whole will be greater than the sum of its parts. Sadly, I can't convince myself.

We are going to have another shite season if we keep signing these average/slightly above average English players. And that's the bottom line, because Baltar said so!

Is he fuck.

He's blocked everyone who thinks that on the balance of all evidence Brendan should be replaced, and is currently having a lovely chat with himself about how it's nice that all the dissenting voices seem to have finally climbed on board.

Better than Ings as a squad player. We obviously don't need two of them Chmampionship level players in our squad, so Ings could be out on his way on loan, or even Austin himself. Confusion galore but well in character with this manager.

Exactly. Even the best British players lack sophistication and subtlety. We're shopping one tier below that. Watch us magically become predictable and easy to figure out while everyone scratches their head and points to stats.

No doubt once we've got all the cheap deals done no problem we will start trying to get the trickier ones done then wring our hands when unsurprisingly other clubs don't accept our lowball offers

Just wandered over to RAWK for the first time in ages to see if even they were having moments of self-doubt, and I'm confronted with this in the VERY FIRST PAGE I land on:

"Only thing I'd add is that if this time last year we'd have forked out for the likes of an Ings or Austin instead of Mario we'd have comfortably made top four and maybe even been inspired to hound Chelsea for that top spot."

I just....what is RAWK even? Is this real life?

He's decent and everything but we don't need decent we need top class. Signing both Austin and Ings is ridiculous unless we get rid of borini and lambert and possibly Sturridge and get another top striker in. I can't believe the extent of our transfer business seems to be decent English players.

Fuck I totally forgot balotelli. There's no way we're shifting him, borini, lambert and Sturridge so our striker force will be - at best - Austin, Ings, Origi, Sturridge and probably Balotelli. Considering Sturridge is made of crisps that is nowhere near good enough.
