Reds linked with Pastore and Matic

Various reports continue to link Liverpool with a January move for PSG's unsettled Argentine Javier Pastore, whilst Benfica midfielder Nemanja Matic is now also said to be on Brendan Rodgers' new year shopping list.

Speculation has been rife for weeks that the Reds plan on making a move for Pastore after the 24 year old appeared to have become surplus to requirements in Paris. The capture of Pastore in 2011 marked the start of PSG's big spending as they shelled out €40m to prize him away from Italian side Palermo. He responded by scoring 16 goals in his first season in the French capital but has failed to build on that bright start and is reportedly available for a knock down £17m.

A natural 'number 10', Pastore was the subject of interest from Arsenal last summer before they eventually landed Mesut Ozil, whilst according to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Napoli and AC Milan are both reportedly keen to take him back to Serie A when the transfer window re-opens.

Meanwhile, reports in Portugal claim the Reds are plotting a move for £30m rated Benfica star Matic. The Serbian international joined the Portuguese side from Chelsea as part of the deal that took David Luiz to Stamford Bridge in 2011 and has since developed into one of Europe's most highly rated midfielders. He was named Primieira Liga Player of the Year last season and according to A Bola the Reds will face stiff competition for his signature from Chelsea and Real Madrid.

So, are Pastore and Matic realistic targets?  Would they be good additions and whose place would they take if they came here?

Anyone who can improve our chances of a EL qualification is to be welocmed, both of these do, if they will come,.

Don't you think those players, added to Suarez, Sturridge, Coutinho, Gerrard, Sakho, Agger, Toure, and Mignolet would be improving our chance of CL qualification rather than EL qualification?

You seem to be in the habit of talking down our chances, based on little more than how much playing experience our manager has. Frankly, it's overly negative and a little bizarre.

I don't even remember Matic at Chelsea, although he played two games for them apparently.  I saw him play in the Europa League final last year and remember thinking he looked class.  I can't see us paying £30m for a midfield player somehow though.

Pastore for £17m I could see happening, plus he falls into the same kind of category as a Sturridge, Coutinho, Sakho etc of being a really highly rated player who ended up on the sidelines at a big club for whatever reason.

Brendan loves his restoration projects, Pastore would be right in his wheelhouse.

                 Mignolet

Johnson Toure Agger Enrique

        Gerrard Lucas Matic

                 Coutinho

          Suarez Sturridge

Kind of like a narrow 442 diamond? Think we'd do better to look at somebody who can stretch play (a winger) rather than somebody like Pastore, though.

Now that Moyes is looking at Will Hughes after our courting him for months, expect Utd and Spurs to be linked soon.

Both excellent players but can't see us paying 30m for anyone until we are already CL qualified

Will Hughes looks like he's going to be a top player who would fit in with the kind of football we play.He is apparently a lfc fan aswell and I hope we do a deal for him in Jan even if we loan him back to derby until the end of the season.

Matic is excellent and would an amazing signing but I am afraid he would cost +30m and I'm not sure he'd interested coming to LIverpool, better go for M'Vila, cheaper, younger and even more gifted player. Also I'd prefer Firmino, Fischer or Leandro Paredes over Pastore, but he's a good player too.

I'd like will hughes over pastore and matic personally. The lad is already class and is going to be fucking brilliant. Heard he is a boyhood red as well so we need to tie something up for him soon before the vultures start circling.

I haven't seen enough of matic lately to say yes or no but pastore would be a good addition.

nice to see us linked with a better class of player though.

I'm driving down to Chelsea to pick Mata up and drive him to Melwood and not letting him go til a deal is done to sign him if they haven't started using him properly by january

Pastore would be a decent alternative should that not work however although I'd prefer someone who could also play wide in order to interchange with Coutinho, don't know much about Matic but we seem to do okay with Chelsea castoffs!

Wouldn't Matic be looked as a replacement (or "competition," I suppose, if you're a huge Lucas fan) for Lucas?

I would think it would be more like:

Mignolet

Johnson  Toure  Sakho  Cissokho

Gerrard  Matic

Suarez  Pastore  Coutinho

Sturridge

which is a title-contending team, with a lot of depth with the likes of Agger, Enrique, Henderson and Moses rotating in or coming in off the bench.  That's if we somehow got both of them, which I doubt is financially possible.  Far more likely we'd buy Pastore and Hughes for the future, or just Matic might be affordable if we sold someone like Agger/Skrtel for a decent wedge.

For either of these two to come here would be tacit admission that our midfield set-up is wanting. I can't see Rodgers having the will to bench Stevie - Lucas, maybe. Why would any top, or even good player, come here if it didn't mean he'd have a solid chance to compete for a place?

Will Hughes is one ugly looking fucker, let the mancs have him.

He reminds me of Luke Chadwick.

All our best teams down the years consisted of "ugly looking fuckers" from Tommy Smith and Phil Thompson through to Sammy Lee and Peter Beardsley....it's only when we got people like Redknapp John Scales and the like that we started goin shite.

These players we are linked with how do people think they will fit in at Spurs?

Will Hughes looks like that 'nice fella Whitey' from Me, Myself and Irene.

He also looks like a peroxide Ray Parlour.

Pastore was quality a few seasons ago and would be great if we could get him in.  Suarez will be leaving at some point.

Dont know  anyhting about Matic but Matteo Kovacic at Inter looks like he is going to be some player and exactly what we need.
