Exclusive: Carragher concerned over midfield balance

Jamie Carragher has expressed his surprise at Liverpool not signing a defensive midfield player this summer and claims it may cause Brendan Rodgers a problem over the coming weeks.

Speaking exclusively to The Liverpool Way podcast, the legendary defender turned Sky Sports pundit admits he is concerned about a lack of natural defensive cover in front of the back four.

“I’m surprised they never tried to get one [a defensive midfielder] in the summer” he explained. “I look at Henderson and Milner as a midfield two and they’ve got great energy and I like both players. I think they’ll both get goals, but neither is that defensive minded and I think that might cause a problem in the coming weeks really.

“And if he wants to go to a holding midfielder then where does Coutinho fit in? Where does Firmino fit in? I think it’s going to be really interesting how Brendan Rodgers sets his side up over the coming months.

In addition to not having signed a holding midfield player, Liverpool are reportedly willing to sell the only natural one they have, with the unsettled Lucas Leiva set to leave the club before the end of the transfer window.

Carragher suggests that a move seems inevitable now as the popular Brazilian is not one to accept not playing regularly, while Liverpool must look to the future with Emre Can. “It’s his decision whether he leaves the club or not, more so than the club’s. I know Lucas well and he doesn’t take too kindly to not playing but I think it’s difficult to find a place for him in the team at the moment.”

Carragher has backed Rodgers’ decision to select Emre Can for the substitutes bench ahead of the more experienced Lucas last weekend, although he is not yet convinced the German is ready to play the defensive midfield position regularly at this point.

“I don’t think Emre Can is ideally suited yet to the holding midfield role” said the 37 year old. “Watching him over the summer for Germany under 21s he’s someone who likes to go forward, powering through midfield.

“I think he would be the better option now though (ahead of Lucas) because if Rodgers is going to play a back four then Can struggled at right back and he’s not suited to playing centre back in a two - although he did really well in a three - but he’s a good young player so you want to keep him involved and keep him happy by giving him games.

“If Liverpool play the same way they did at Stoke then you wonder where he fits in, so he has to be next in line ahead of Lucas because of the age difference and the feeling within the club that he’s a classy player with a big future.”

You can hear more from Carragher - including his thoughts on the Lovren / Sakho debate, why Coutinho needs to play centrally and how he was quietly impressed by Christian Benteke’s debut at Stoke last weekend - by listening to the full interview on the embedded player below, or by subscribing to the TLW podcast here.

I think that we have to give Brendan a chance and see how he sets up over the next month or so.

He has never bought/created a team before so he is bound to make a few mistakes. Lets hope that Gary Mac and Sean O can fill in the gaps for him.

I think that Milner and Hendo will prove a solid pairing, how the rest shapes up remains to be seen.

Carragher was a great defender here, but I've got no time for him as a pundit. It especially irritates me that if you go looking for Liverpool news - like how long somebody is injured for or transfers - Carragher's opinion is always present.

Why's that?

I've always hated Carra, the mammoth cunt. How very dare an ordinary, working class Scouse lad excell in his chosen profession and earn more than me. I probably celebrated his various own goals more than I did winning the Champions League in 2005.

I was delighted when the long-range shot he hit on his final game hit the post.  That'll teach him

I understand your point, but he is the most current of our ex players in the media and with 24 hour football news its inevitable he is the Liverpool rent a qoute.

Its more about the system than the man, imo.

He's easily one of the best pundits thats around for me.

Especially when compared to the utter tripe thats on tv.

pretty much everyone that BT have employed is a mundane boring ex player and to top it off they also have howard webb.

Sure what does Carragher know about football?

Knows how to kick a ball but when you push for Curbishley and Hodgson as LFC managers then it highlights some deficiencies.

His honeymoon period is all up mate,he doesn't have the luxury of a few more mistakes.

He has a big squad now and I fear he wont be able to quickly sort out the best formation

and will be like a blind kid doing a jigsaw.

The Milner / Hendo pairing  is certainly solid but can it create chances ? I think Rodgers will find it difficult to leave either of these guys on the bench which may be what is needed in some games.

I’ve been on this ”we-need-a-DM” wavelength for ages.

However,  I can’t see BR deliberately wanting  to expose our defense to unnecessary threats. He obviously has other ideas on how to protect our defense. We did the defensive part very well last week without a DM. The change of formation that came with the introduction of Can mainly improved our attack. Our defense had been good all evening (and continued to be so with Can).

We’ll find out soon enough if BR's defensive strategy works out or not. Can’t wait

Why's that?

I don't think it's Liverpool news. It's Carragher's job to talk about football on TV, and sometimes that means talking about Liverpool. Daniel Sturridge's injury timetable, us signing somebody, our match being moved Saturday to Monday - that's all news. What a sky sports pundit did, or didn't say on TV, is not, in my view.

Agree with this. We played it keep it tight and try to nick one against Stoke and did, rarely committing to numbers going forward. Play like that and he doesn't need a DM, nor will we score too many ourselves. But a win's a win.

If Carra speaks, I listen.

An odd post, Kevin.
