Elliott:  I can challenge for a first team spot next season

Harvey Elliott believes he can be another attacking option for Jurgen Klopp next season.

The 18-year old winger has flourished on loan at Blackburn Rovers scoring six goals while developing the creative side to his game by contributing 11 assists for the Championship side and being nominated for the EFL Young Player Of the Year award.

Despite making a few cameo appearances for the league champions last season, he knew it was best for his career path to have some regular minutes.

The Echo (via The Counter Attack Podcast) reported Elliott as saying:

“I had a few appearances here and there last season and took this loan with Blackburn, which I personally thought would be the best thing for me.

"I had a chat with Jurgen as well and he said for me to go and express myself, and that the move would be the best thing for my career and for me to get the games and experience. He said he'd support me 100%.

The Championship is well known for being one of the most physically demanding leagues in all of Europe.

Elliott has made over 40 appearances for Rovers this season which has moved his career game tally past the half century mark.

It is something which the youngster feels will put him in good stead ahead of the next step in his career

“Next season I am going to go back thinking I can get in the team. I have had this experience and feel ready, and have 50 appearances under my belt, which is a lot for a teenager."

Elliott has undoubtedly grown as a player but he knows competition for spots in the Liverpool first team will be fierce.

“I feel 100% confident I can go in and challenge. I'm looking forward to the fight and showing to people I am a different player and ready to play when called upon.

"I will need to work hard and train well and if I get my chance, I have to take it."

While Jurgen Klopp is a clear admirer of his talents, so too is Tony Mowbray with the veteran manager effusive in what he has delivered for Rovers during this campaign.

“Harvey is a wonderful talent. I don’t want to keep eulogising about him, because the statistics and his quality on the ball stand out for all to see.

“I watched him in training once and he almost scored a goal, Pearsy (Aynsley Pears) made a brilliant save, where he ran through six men and had a shot from the edge of the box, it was like the ball was stuck to his boot.

“We took him because he’s got class and we knew that he was going to help us. It didn’t matter that he was 17.

“He is a great kid, he wants to introduce himself to everyone, he’s an amazing young guy, he’s got personality so he can get tetchy.

"We haven’t fallen out but we’ve had words on some occasions and he’s a brilliant football player.

While acknowledging the quality of his Liverpool teammates is elite, there is one player who stands out in the mind of Elliott.

“Firmino. When he is on the ball, you can't get it off him. He is a joke.

“It's a Brazilian thing. They are all technically so good, Fabinho and even Alisson whenever they are on the ball.

"Everyone has their different qualities and you can see why they are one of the best teams in the world. They have talent and skill and all work 100%.

"But when I first saw Firmino, I was just dazed watching him as what he was doing with the ball was unbelievable."

Good luck to him. He made a bright start to the season on the pitch and seems to be a decent lad off it too.
Hope he comes back stronger and never has to play fucking Burnley again.

it's not just about the injury i don't think though. these moments he gets in the team now are the building blocks that shape his career. we don't know how long he will be out for, but we do know from other players it is really hard to get the rhythm to get back in this team after a big injury. he could effectively lose the season even if he is only injured till xmas. let's hope the layoff isn't too long and he can get some more games under his belt this season.

Expected to be back this season but no timescale.

Hopefully the fact they popped it back on

on the pitch bodes well. The poor lad must have been in agony while they did that.

Some good news then. Get well quickly, Harvey.

Why the fuck is it always our players getting these bad injuries? Alli did his calf against Norwich, Ox did his knee against Roma, the shite fucked Virgil's knee and Thiago's and now leeds yard dog does Harvey's ankle.

I'm actually proud of the lad. He seems very mature for his age and wears the badge well.

Hopefully his recovery will be swift and complete.

Cheers. I thought he'd supported it somewhere.

Just think he's trying to support a fellow pro to be honest. As many have said, although it was a genuine attempt for the ball (indeed, he wins the ball), the fact that he leaves the ground and it's the knee of his trailing leg that comes down and does the damage, for me the red is justified.

I think the fact they've said they're 'confident' he'll play again this season suggest that with if all goes to plan he'll be back well before May 2025

Harvey Elliott has shown encouraging signs in his road to recovery from an ankle break at Leeds by posting an image of him on an exercise bike.

The 18-year-old Reds midfielder fractured his left ankle in a challenge by Leeds' Pascal Struijk that left him screaming in agony, just as the teenager was getting up and running in Jurgen Klopp's first team squad.

No timescale has been set for Elliott's return to action at Anfield but an image posted on his Instagram account on Tuesday is an important first checkpoint reached for the young midfielder.

The post came a few days after Elliott shared a snippet of him donning an oxygen mask for a photo showing the beginning of his rehabilitation programme.

The 18-year-old is expected to return to action before the end of this season, with  Reds doctor Jim Moxon revealing the first responses from the medics on the Elland Road pitch were crucial to Elliott's recovery time.

Moxon said: 'We were able to reduce the dislocation immediately on the pitch and Harvey had surgery to repair the fracture and ligaments damaged in the incident. The operation was a success so his comeback starts now.

'We won't put pressure on him by setting a specific timeframe beyond being able to say with confidence we expect him to feature again later in the season following our rehab programme.'

Elliott was just getting into his stride at Anfield after impressing Klopp in pre-season, which prompted the Reds to not strive for a midfield replacement for Gini Wijnaldum, who departed for PSG over the summer.

The 18-year-old had spent the last two years in Liverpool's academy after joining from Fulham, but an excellent loan spell at Blackburn Rovers last term saw him rise to prominence in the professional game.

Elliott started his first Premier League match of the season for the Reds against Burnley and was then handed a shock chance from the off against title rivals Chelsea on August 28.

However, his first match after the September international break saw Elliott struck down on 63 minutes during the Leeds clash, which has threatened his continued involvement for the Reds this season.

Classy player. Little bit of the early-years Wilshire about him, which is a huge compliment. Hopefully get him back for later in season, and he doesn't lose mobility as a result.

We have to realise that 17 and 18 year olds who reach the first team have already been playing football regularly(two or three times a week) for 8,9,10 years before they hit the first team. The physical strain of playing so much football alongside playing against players who are men and 10-15 years older in some cases is a big step up. I am not saying this has anything to do with Elliott specifically but these are among the main reasons most managers are reluctant to play young players a lot while they are still growing physically, let alone tactically. While Klopp has faith in Elliott and Jones et al from a technical and skill point of view,he will still understand that they cannot be expected to perform like 27 year olds across a whole season. Elliott, and Jones to a certain extent, inclusions are not ideal and are a result of experienced players letting the club down,Ox and Keita mostly.

As horrific an injury as it looks, it appears to have a relatively short recovery time, if Gomes at Everton is anything to go by.

Harvey's stepping up his return, running outside on grass. Full story on the Echo.

"Harvey Elliott has taken the next step in his rehabilitation from the serious ankle injury that halted the promising start to his campaign.

Elliott was on Monday morning running on the outside pitches at the Reds' training complex at Kirkby for the first time since suffering a fracture dislocation of his left ankle and damaged ligaments at Leeds United on September 12.

The 18-year-old subsequently underwent successful surgery before embarking on his recovery back to full fitness."
