PODCAST: Liverpool 0 Manchester United 0 - Match Reaction

The Reds relinquished top spot in the Premier League after they failed to beat plucky underdogs Manchester United on a frustrating afternoon at Anfield.

Chris Smith is joined by Julian Richards and TLW Editor Dave Usher to discuss what went wrong and what was good, before the lads turn their attention to the midweek cup clash with West Ham.

Surprised how impressed you all were with Endo. The entire pod described a team/forward line that didn't get any quick ball between the lines. He's that spilt second slower than top class, that's the difference in getting Mo running at a back 4 as opposed to facing 6 players and having to recycle. When we got Trent in there he took the Hollywood approach which fucked us over.

Surprised Klopp didn't hook him at half time, Endo for Harvey looked a stonewall change to me.

That’s not necessarily his job though, is it.

We will have to disagree, it's his job to get it to Dom and Gravenberch as quick as he can, it was all risk free, reminded me of latter days Fabinho.

I don’t really remember peak Fabinho playing many killer passes through to the forwards.

Was it a true story that Pep Ljinders wanted to play this system and told Klopp do it! if it doesn't work you can dock me a years wages.

I thought I may of heard it on one of these podcasts a while back.

Szoboszlai, Grav, Mo and Diaz all had plenty of the ball in good positions and generally did absolutely fuck all with it. A lot of the time it was Endo who gave them it. The only one who can say he didn't get anywhere near enough of the ball in the areas he wants to be in is Nunez, and he was shite with the limited service he did get.

It's true. Direct quote from Lijnders himself.

Looked totally out of his depth. Like a poor man’s Lucas. And I say that as a Lucas fan.

If you think Endo was shit I don’t know what game you were watching.  He was our best player and didn’t put a foot wrong.  He was garbage last week and I was worried the atmosphere would get to him but he rose to it.  The tactical setup is shite and the clear complete lack of a plan to overload the wings is infuriating.  It’s been going on for years and honestly baffles me that it’s never addressed especially how often we struggle playing against deep defences.  The subs were necessary because Diaz and Nunez stunk the place out but they absolutely killed us.

I really like Gakpo but lately he’s got a touch of the substitute Sturridge about him.  He seems to think his only route into the starting lineup is scoring so he’s just taking the wrong option and shooting at any opportunity.  He also selfishly didn’t want to go wide which left Gomez on his own similar to Kostas on the other side and it means the ball just gets recycled inside until someone hits an awful lobbed ball or cross from deep.

I'd 100% be playing either Gakpo or Nunez left now, because Diaz isn't offering anything at all. Couldn't even go past Antony yesterday, it was embarrassing seeing that.

The tactics are becoming a bit of a lightning rod simply for the fact that it's a bit unorthodox according to some people (despite the fact loads of top teams are doing it).

The point with any shape is to defend better. That's what we're doing right now. We literally had a relegation level defense last season when we played with traditional fullbacks. It just wasn't working whatsoever, for a bunch of reasons. Just because the forwards are all in bad form, it doesn't mean they're being stiffled tactically. We have pretty ample evidence of Diaz, Jota, Gakpo and Nunez, simply all not taking the next step.

And to be honest, if the coaching staff's tactics were responsible for all these attacking players not becoming top players, their jobs should be in danger, but I suspect that's not really what's happening.

I wasn’t confident we’d break them down starting Darwin. Darwin is very less effective against park the bus. I wanted Gakpo to start, and failing any break throughs, perhaps an early 2nd half switch to a fresh, fast Darwin, just as the Manure Bus was getting tired and cranky.

Thought Endo was reasonable, and with Macca injured, deserved to start. Dom, to me, has been overplayed - thought he looked tired, and a rotation with Grav and one other, is much more appropriate.

Would have started Gomez at RB and Trent in mid with either Grav or Dom. Could have always been changed later.

Mo is Mo. Can’t not play him, but with his enforced absence coming up, we’ll be experimenting!

No three points, but let’s be honest, we all felt they could sneak it late on, so it was a banana skin game, and we avoided a nasty result. We’re in the mix! The Gunners will be dangerous, but they won’t be so cynical. They think they can win the league. So do we. Bring it on.

I often listen to the pod in bed and I fell asleep and missed the last 10 minutes or so. Just played it - I’m glad I did because I would have missed the chippy story!

It sounds stupid but at least three of us immediately got a bad feeling about the game because of it.

It's a lightning rod because we look shit. I think it's partly because of out of form players, but it's not just that.

The knobheads who panic and walk about two miles to find an alternative?

I was literally talking John through the possible ways to counteract it as me and him led the charge to find an accessible chippy. It messed with heads.
