PODCAST: Crystal Palace 0 Liverpool 0 - Match Reaction

It was an uneventful, uninspiring night under the lights at Selhurst Park as the Reds were held to a 0-0 draw by Palace. The result itself isn't too bad but it's hard to feel anything other than disappointed by the nature of the performance.

TLW Editor Dave Usher is joined by Julian Richards and John Gallagher to talk this one over and look ahead to Wolves in midweek.

Two things on Curtis Jones. 1- Its not a great look to keep a player just because he fits a quota.  Smacks of bad planning in recruitment. 2 - He must be bloody awful in training if he can't get a start in our midfield currently given the performances of those that are starting.

????

No, we were talking about whether the clean sheets meant anything and John said the clean sheet was decided by it and if they had eleven men they'd have scored.

It's quite obvious with Trent that when we are on top form he is the perfect player for our system, but the state we are in now means that he's having to do a lot more defending, and let's be honest he is a very average defender and positionally naive so he's looking a lot worse and getting exposed more. I do think that teams are targeting our right hand side, when Konate is out he looks worse too. Long term I think he will be ok as his positives far outweigh the negatives when he's on form. But your right, we do need a right hand side fullback al la Costas to play and rotate Trent as needed. Im not sure about his body language but he does come off as looking like he's not arsed recently, i don't necessarily think thats true i think thats just the way he carries himself and be miss-interpreted, the reason i say this is because in interviews he clearly does care.

I'm starting to think he's just had enough of playing right back and doesn't want to do the things demanded of playing the position in Klopp's team. When he was a kid and wanting to prove himself he embraced all of it and was eager to learn, including the defending and the chasing back 60 yards when someone had given the ball away cheaply. Now he's 24 and won everything and he's giving off a vibe that all of that is beneath him. Last night was so bad.

Trent can defend, it's just that at times he's starting to look like he doesn't really want to. Earlier in the season effort was a problem (Napoli away jumps out, and Old Trafford too) but mostly now it's focus and concentration that is the issue.

he’s getting no support from the midfield though.

True but the two goals he nearly gave away last night would have all been on his sloppy attitude.

Jules’ point about Trent having zero competition for his place was a good one. Nothing to keep him sharp and at it. But the same goes for practically the whole team too. And you don’t get the sense that (m)any of them really want to be out there that much anyway. They all look fucking miserable.

Re: the Jones discussion, the time has passed for him. Said this for a long time but he’s one of the few players Klopp has negatively affected.

Best thing for Jones would have been to go on loan after the title winning season. He really needed to go out play his football and develop rather than trying to mould him into a functional  trooper of a midfielder.

He wasn't earlier in the season but he's been getting plenty recently. And the midfield is not to blame for any of the shit he served up last night.

A cross was sent over from our left in the 2nd half and the forward - Mateta maybe - pushed Teent in the back and a free was given to us. Trent just looked non-plussed before, during and after the foul. He didn’t seem put out ar all that he might concede a score or thst he ws bullied. His head is in a wrong place altogether. Maybe you are correct and he thinks the defending part of the game is below him but his lack of care for possession at times is worrying also.

I dont agree that the players all seeing out their contracts and leaving for free is a Klopp thing.

Pretty sure it would have been Edwards/Gordon saying they only leave if we get an offer for X amount otherwise they see out their contract and we realise the full amortisation of their fee.

Completely disagree. It’s fatigue. He’s physically and mentally twatted. There is no attitude problem from him. The muttering is anger and frustration with himself. He’s a born competitor who’s used to winning and he can’t cope with the way he and the team are playing.

That's not the same thing. Players who are open to leaving (Origi, Phillips etc) can go if the price is right. If we don't get what we want then they stay.

When a player isn't looking to leave Klopp never forces them out because he honours the contract.

Its the same thing.

Ox would have left in the summer but we would have been quoting clubs £25-£30 mill no doubt which no silly fucker would pay.

Then we got no offers obviously and he picked up the injury before the window shuts

Was listening to this whilst out the bike. Was tempted to just cycle into The Mersey.

Blame Jules for shitting all over any attempt I made to look for positives.

They're all fatigued. He's the only one giving off that kind of vibe.

He isn’t giving off that vibe. You’re inferring what isn’t there. He’s pissed off but there’s no way in world he can’t be arsed or thinks he’s to good to do the hard yards. The reason I know that is because Klopp would simply not accept that from any player no matter who they were. He would just not be in the team.

He gave off that vibe on Saturday and Klopp didn't accept it because he subbed him.
