Just done a quick check on their website.

 

If you leave at 0400 on 01/08/08 and come back at the same time on 08/08/08, it'll cost you £63 all in...

Ah yes, but by going at 4am, they'll all be asleep on the ferry!

 

My usual trick has been to catch a ferry at about midnight and then drive down through France to Bordeaux without stopping. Probably not the most sensible idea, but you miss the Paris traffic!

 

Norfolk Line has always been the cheapest whenever we've looked - probably not as posh as P&O or SeaFrance, and the crossing takes a bit longer, but much cheaper.

August is unfortunately high season so it's the most expensive.

 

I'd suggest trying Cottages 4you and you get the ferry dirt cheap as part of the deal.

 

I'd recommend the Petite Suisse area in Normandy (just to the SW of Caen). Only about 4 hours from Calais and it's great scenery, not too many Brits and a very pleasant place indeed.
