Yeah, I agree: let's bring Woodgate home ;)

Mexes aint coming -

28/08/2005 Foot - Transfers: Liverpool contacted Mexès Liverpool contacted on several occasions the ACE Rome during last week in order to obtain the transfer of the central defender Philippe Mexès but ran up against the refusal of the Italian club of football, indicated to Sunday the entourage of the French player. The English club, champion of Europe in title, would have wished to secure the loan of Mexès for one year with option to buy, but the trainer of Roma Luciano Spalletti would have put his veto at such a transaction, causing the renouncement of Reds.

Take Owen out of the equation and we should have the money to buy quality players for both positions. The only trouble is, nobody is available. In my opinion we should have at least gone in for someone like Pennant our Routledge - as cover if nothing else. Now there is pretty much no one out there, and the deadline is approaching fast.

Centre half is less of a problem (we can probably hold out until at least Jan on that one - esp. if Djimi is fit), but I'd prefer to see us sign someone like Agger than take Mexes on loan.

At the moment though it looks more likely that we'll get Owen and no one else.

Just as well that we only need two out of three of those things then.

Think it all depends on your viewpoint. I'd be happy with Crouch fit again plus a new winger and defender but the 'only one Michael Owen' brigade would probably settle on any deal that got him alone back here.

In truth, having bought two target men I'd have thought Rafa's priority would be a supply-route winger.

I have been one of the brigade wanting to see owen back but I understand peoples concerns what I won't be happy with though is getting owen as an appeasment for not getting the 2 players we desperately need in the 2 positions we are short on .Owen for me is a bonus not the necessity and I hope all our energies are not going into getting him.

I don't think Rafa is that great at this transfer game, does he have many contacts? This is his first job where he identifies and buys players. Apart from Alonso, Reina, Garcia, Reina and Sissoko - the rest have been no great shakes.

You almost have half of the team there on one year...it isn`t that bad or?

..and Nando....and gave Warnock his second, or third chance....

I think Rafa has put all his eggs into one basket with Figo and didnt have a plan b.

If that was true then surely he'd have piad the £2 million asking price? Personally I think it would have been quite cheap even for someone of his age. If £750,000 for David Speedie was alright 15 years ago then surely that price for Figo was relatively cheap?

Doubt we had 2m at the time.
