Report: Liverpool in positive discussions with Willian but Werner move looks unlikely

The transfer rumour mill has delivered some contrasting news for Liverpool fans today.

One report seemingly out of the blue sees Chelsea star Willian heavily linked, with the Mirror (via Sport) saying that the Reds have jumped to the head of the queue to secure the services of the Brazilian.

Willian is one of a list of players whose contract runs out in the summer and the 31 year-old was keen to extend his time at Stamford Bridge by another three years but Chelsea were only wanting to give the veteran another two seasons as they eye look to boost their own attacking options with Philippe Coutinho heavily linked to the West London outfit.

If this rumour does eventuate, then much like the Betway app Willian would be a very handy addition, not only with his eye for goal and playmaking ability but he also is a hard working player which would certainly fit into the Reds style.

However a move for another player that Liverpool have been widely linked to has seemingly come to a halt.

Timo Werner is reportedly keen and ready to move to the Reds in the off-season if they activate his £52million release clause.

However The Mirror (via Sky Sports) say that Liverpool are not considering a bid before his clause expires on the 15th of June.

While Werner has expressed his desire to join Liverpool, he is wary of fully committing to the club unless he is sure of receiving his fair share of playing time.

With the formidable front three of Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane not going anywhere for the foreseeable future, he may well have to bide his time on the substitutes bench and therefore a club like Chelsea who are actively looking for a striker could come in from the side and sign him.

You sense this potential transfer has a few more twists and turns ahead in the upcoming months.

Really good player and seemingly a nice fit considering his skill and work rate. Doesn't score anywhere near the number of goals he should though, so is he a viable fill in for Sadio and Mo? I'm not sure, but if we did sign him I could easily get on board with it I think.

Transfer moves in general have largely come to a halt because clubs don't know what the situation is going to be next week, never mind in a few months. Many clubs will struggle to even exist. Liverpool have no income at the moment bar whatever cut they make from merchandising, which in itself will have taken a downturn because it will be online sales only (matchday sales are always high because we get a lot of day-trippers, and fans of visiting clubs are known to spend money on Liverpool stuff too), and it will also be items that are soon to be obsolete anyway as the new season's stuff gets introduced around May usually (although it's supposed to be July this year as that's when the Nike deal kicks in). So a lot of plans will be on hold, and that includes new contracts and what to do with those players who will soon be out of contract.

That Mirror piece is putting across the suggestion that our interest in Werner has cooled when I doubt that's the case, and they've also suggested we are talking to Willian and his representatives despite not even mentioning whether Chelsea have given their player permission to do so. Players in the final 6 months of their contract are free to talk to clubs outside their current club's country about a free transfer in the summer, but they can only speak to clubs from the same country if their current club has granted them permission to do so. That usually only happens after they've offered a new deal which the player has rejected.

Willian can fuck off. Since when has a player who went to Chelsea instead of us then ended up playing for us been any good?

Willian in - Shaq out is a great move. He can play as the furthest forward mid or either side of the front three. Can take a kick too.

On his scoring record he has always been third or even fourth banana there so chipping in with 8-10 goals is a good return.

Klopp will see to that. You seem to be doubting our fantastic transfer dealings during his reign.

One of the most overrated players in the history of the league. If he wants to come here and run around for 10 minutes a game when Mane and Salah get subbed off, that's fine I guess but I wouldn't really see the point.

You’re only saying this because I rate him.

The Werner thing probably won't happen now because of that arrangement he had. Didn't his clause need activating in April for the knock down price to come into effect? We won't be doing that with things so uncertain, which would mean if and when we did go in for him, the price is higher which presumably makes it less attractive a deal.

Willian on a Bosman on the other hand, would make financial sense in this climate, as clubs aren;t going to have loads to spend when this is all over.

I’ve fancied him coming here for a while. He’s be a downgrade from them for sure but and upgrade over Shaq, Lallana and Ox (in that position) which works for me.

he also gives is the chance of actually scoring from a free kick if he’s on.

My first thought was the club/Edwards/FSG think the arse will fall out of the transfer market so badly they could get him for less than the sell on clause when the window finally opens.

If the club/Edwards/FSG were the slightest bit interested in Werner, they would have told him to shut his gob ages ago.  The more his lips flap the less chance there is of getting him.

Probably his agent more than the player,as is often the case nowadays.
