Report: Kelleher set to ask for transfer in the summer

Liverpool will need to add a back-up goalkeeper to their transfer list if the latest report on Caoimhin Kelleher is on the mark.

Football Insider reports that the club is expecting the Irish international to ask for a transfer in his quest for regular first-team football.

Having a reserve goalkeeper of great quality is something of a double-edged sword as it keeps the number one on their toes and if there is a drop off in form, an injury or suspension then the manager is safe in the knowledge that the gap is not too big.

But when that senior goalkeeper is as good as Alisson Becker, it means opportunities are extremely thin on the ground.

There is little doubt that Kelleher would be the No 1 goalkeeper in the majority of Premier League clubs, indeed he may well be the best reserve goalkeeper in Europe at this point of time.

But the truth of the matter is that the 24 year-old deserves to be playing a lot more than he is especially as he wants to grow his game at domestic as well as at a international level.

Kelleher was outstanding as Liverpool defeated Chelsea on penalties in the League Cup final last season, but unfortunately for him, that was to be his last senior outing for this season.

And in this campaign, opportunities have been even more thin on the ground with Liverpool exiting in the early stages of the domestic cup competitions (three appearances in total.)

The current contract of Kelleher runs out in three years time means any sale will land the club a handy fee.

The unflappable nature of Kelleher is what really stands out about him as a keeper and that is one element that you can’t really teach.

His attention to detail is outstanding and a case in point is the fact that in November after a win against Derby, he became the Liverpool goalkeeper with most penalty shootout victories (four) and most shootout saves (six) in the club’s history.

Klopp has never been one to hold a player back if they feel there is a better opportunity around, and this is especially the case with Kelleher.

He is a unabashed fan of the Irishman’s qualities and in a perfect world would love to keep him around, but he knows that he is too good to be spending his days watching on from the sidelines.

Lad is too good to sit on our bench and of course wants to play and will not be short of good clubs giving him the chance to play as he enters his peak years.

I'd like to see us have a buy back clause with him.

Who is this Football Insider person or persons who seems to keep getting quoted lately? They can fuck off.

From what I've seen, he's some Scottish lad with a Youtube channel who keeps getting interviews with various journalists on transfers.

So what he says seem to have some element of a story behind them, unlike some LFC supporting frauds who seemingly pull their stories out their arse.

Sounds like just another headline seeking social media quim.

Could easily loan him out for two years but that 90s budget will need boosted by sales.

Like Dean Henderson?

The perception that you can just loan a player, especially a keeper, out easily to tide him over for a few years is a lot more difficult than people make out, for a starts where do you loan him and to what level.

Sending him to a lower PL/newly promoted side will see him facing lots of shots and having to constantly make lots of saves but doesn't necessarily prepare him for being our number 1 where he should (in theory) spend lots of time doing very little and making the occasional save, it opens him up to more mistakes in quick succession like what happened to Henderson and then public perception starts to change on the player.

Can you send him to a team chasing Europe (conference/UEFA) or are they sufficiently 'big' that they're not looking to develop a player for another team and would rather buying a keeper outright?

Teams with CL ambitions you can rule out straight away.

There are very few good fits in the league that wouldn't require an outright sale (Brentford, at a push, if they lose Raya, maybe 1 or two others) and teams like Spurs will only be looking to buy.

The other option is taking the Real Madrid route and selling him with a buy back clause but that might limit his sale to teams abroad (Ajax if Ward doesn't fancy Rulli?)

What about Dortmund? Even if it brought down the price of Bellingham a little or ideally a two year loan as s little sweetener for them.

He gets to go to a huge club and gets big experiences domestically and in Europe playing in one of the best stadiums in the world.

They get a potentially outstanding keeper.

We get to see if he is worthy to be Ali's ultimate replacement.

They have the young Swiss guy who just singed a new contract.

He did whiff a clearance last week though so...

Funny enough I thought of Kelleher going there when he did that.

Don't know anything about him but he picked a bad game to make a mistake in.

Picked a bad day to cock up a clearance.

Honestly think selling him is the next monumentally massive mistake this club will make, in a fucking long line of mistakes.

He is going to be brilliant

The problem is that, while fans will say that a certain keeper is 'too good' to be the reserve keeper, they'll also complain that others are 'not good enough'. So they basically won't be happy unless we have a number two who is not too good, but good enough, to be on the bench (although, when he does play in the first team, they'll demand that he plays as if he IS too good for the bench). Where, I wonder, will we find such a player? Shall we compile a list?
