PODCAST: Chelsea 0 Liverpool 0 - Match Reaction

At least we didn't lose. Another depressing away day though in which the attack rarely threatened and the defence had Chelsea's profligacy in front of goal to thank for a rather unconvincing clean sheet.

Chris Smith talks this one through with Dan Thomas and TLW Editor Dave Usher.

No obvious reasons?

Mane gone

Nunez in

No midfielders in

Three pretty big reasons in my eyes

Behave. Those are reasons why we might fall behind City and be a dozen points worse off. Those aren't reasons for THIS.

What we're seeing now is unfathomable. These players literally can't do anything anymore. Can't defend, can't attack, can't keep the ball, can't win it back, tactically clueless, no fight, no resilience....

But sure, put all that on Mané leaving and Darwin coming in. We had the same midfielders last season by the way, so using that as an explanation for us being aboput a million points worse off just doesn't wash.

Daisy has one thing to say and says it repeatedly.

Alongside all the mad shit is the fact clubs know exactly how we set up and how we are going to play, we don't change anything except the players doing it. Just the slightest of tweaks now and then it doesn't work so we revert back to the same old side same, formation, same high line, same chasing shadows followed by "we need to work harder or press the right spaces at the right time" or "win second balls" or "make challenges in the right areas". The system is shit. Its done as long as we have half this team, even then its fairly clear that way more teams can handle the press fairly easily.

When Chris asked me what was off about us, second ball was something I should have brought up. It feels like we're second to everything. You can attribute that to a lack of legs in midfield I would say.

You can't underestimate the mental impact that decisions like weve made have on players.

We lose an absolute warrior in Mane who pressed relentlessly and was cool as ice when through on goal.

We replace him with what i can only describe as a complete donkey who has no idea how to press and misses almost all of the chances he gets.

I know you like him but i think you need to take your rose tinted pony tail specs off, he is fucking brutal.

I mean if you're a midfielder or a full back where our setup requires you to absolutely bust your bollocks and you see a donkey like Nunez galloping around missing chances left right and centre, youd start thinking what is the fucking point.

Especially when the owners also cant be fucked to invest properly in the playing staff year after fucking year. If im Robbo or Virg or Trent etc and ive been busting my bollocks year after year and then the scouts and owners fuck everything up, id be like na fuck you bunch of cunts. Time to sort it out

Actually can't believe anyone could listen to that and their first take away is on anything other than "Dan Corleone".

Think it might simultaneously be the best and worst thing I’ve ever heard on the pod. It’s amazing!!! Mesmerising, even.

Also, fair play for continuing to do the pod. It must feel like some kind of purgatory - especially compared to this time last season.

Can't help but feel it's building up to the Arsenal game at the weekend - some kind of reckoning for Dave if (when) we get beat.

Dan Corleone might be the best thing ever posted on here.

I want Jules by my side if it is. We'll face it together.

Couple of things, this Chelsea Liverpool game was no where near the worst in 23 years. The nil nil at Anfield was as bad a game as I can remember.

2nd thing is Arsenal are top of the league and played Europa League football. Its a tired English excuse, probably originating from Harry Redknapp after one of his teams got knocked out. All being well we will actually need the extra games to keep players involved ticking over and shouldn't need to involve the top players until March/April.

Enjoyed it again which is strange because it was depressing as fuck.

And the Europa League Final in 2024 is in Dublin.

It's not the impact on players of the Europa League that bothers me. It's the impact on me. I'd actually relish the prospect of new faces at the ground, fans for whom the trip to Anfield is a novel experience. But the prospect of all those Sunday kickoffs...ugh.

Intrigued by the possibility of a season so bad that it stopped you celebrating previous seasons.

Obviously if it turned out we were cannibals and every win was celebrated with cannibalism that would put a dampener on things. Beyond serious criminal behaviour, I can’t think of anything else that would.
