Platini calls for debt crackdown

Tuesday, 13 January 2004

BarcelonaRomaJuventusFrench legend Michel Platini says that big European clubs should be relegated if they continue to run up big debts.

The former Juventus man targeted clubs such as Roma and Barcelona who continue to splash out on big-name players despite reportedly running up huge debts.

Platini says that European leagues should follow the example of Le Championnat in France - where clubs are relegated if they compile massive debts.

"If a team tries to respect the rules and another one makes still more debts, the competition is unbalanced," said Platini.

"In France clubs who have big debts go to Division Three and can't buy players.

"I understand that it is difficult saying that Roma must go into Serie C, but it isn't right that there are clubs who try everything to control their balance sheets while others make only debts.

"It isn't right, for example, that Edgar Davids went to Barcelona, who have a few troubles and who had already bought Ronaldinho from PSG.

"It's too easy winning when you don't control debts.

"There has been this worry for a few years, but in the end we must decide on UEFA Champions League exclusions for those clubs who aren't respecting economic rules."

There is more money in football now than there has ever been, so why do so many clubs have massive debts? Because all the money goes into player salaries.

We as fans pay ever increasing admission charges to line the pockets of these mercenary bastards. So why don't we stop going? Because as Bobby Robson says "It's a drug" for most of us. I feel guilty if I miss a home match.

Most of the great players in the 70's now run pubs to earn a living. Sir Geoff Hurst was an insurance salesman when he retired. Most of today's regular Premiership players will never have to work again when they retire.

Platini- fantastic player and talks sense. If his idea is adopted we will pay less for our tickets and a level playing field will be established. Arguements?

We have some debt ourselves, haven't we?? A new stadium will add more debts..so there is no doubt about the importance of reaching the championslegue next season, and the season after that....etc!! But a very good idea from Platini!
