Winning something is always better than winning nothing even if it is the 4th choice competition.

I would generally rather have 3rd and a trophy than 2nd and no trophy. The only difference between 2nd and 3rd is a qualifying round and bragging rights. Neither is first.

Trophies are better than which runner up you were.

I'd say finishing second has an impact on players' perceptions of us as well Andy.

It's sad but true, I don't think the Carling carries much weight anymore, certainly if it's the only success of a season - I remember my own pleasure in us winning it in 2003 lasted pretty much until our next gormless and insipid defeat, at which point I forgot all about it.

If someone had offered me 2nd in the league and a decent run in the CL at the start of the season, I'd have been more than happy to take it as it would have (and will, hopefully) represent a genuine step forward.

(Who knows, maybe we'll nab the FA Cup this time round too...)

Who remembers second best?

Sad but true. No matter how small the Carling Cup is, it still represents a victory, a win in a competition. If we gets 2nd this season, it will be a step in the right direction, however it still doesn't represent being the best.

Ask any of the LFC players, and my guess would be they have the same view. They want to win competitions, not finish second, even though that second place might represent a step forward.
