Reina claims he's here to stay

The saga over Pepe Reina’s future took a further twist today with the keeper saying that he’s “here to stay” as Napoli refuse to meet Liverpool’s asking price for the Spanish keeper.

Former Reds' boss Rafa Benitez is reportedly keen to take the Spanish keeper to Naples permanently but not at the release clause set by the Reds, which according to the Telegraph is £3.95m. With no vacancies at any of the big Spanish clubs and seemingly very little interest from elsewhere, Reina has found himself back at Liverpool despite having written a farewell letter to the fans a year ago that also contained a parting shot at an unimpressed Brendan Rodgers.

Rodgers reacted to questions about Reina’s future by saying yesterday “Pepe made it clear last year where he is at. We will see what happens over the next few weeks”. It would certainly appear that there is no way back for the former Barcelona and Villarreal keeper, with Liverpool reluctant to pay 100k a week for him to sit on the bench and Rodgers settled on Simon Mignolet as his number one.

Reina, however, claims he is going nowhere. "I have a contract to respect with Liverpool. I'm training well and I am perfectly fine with my team-mates," he said. "I am here to stay. I have not talked to Brendan Rodgers, I've been here for only four days and I am just thinking of training to my best and getting back into shape."

“All the big Spanish teams are covered in my role," he added. "I see it as very difficult to return to Spain. It's normal though that over the years you want to return to where you came from, so we'll see."

The one thing that really confuses me about signing Mignolet, was the fact that a goalkeeper who stays on his line at all times, and struggles with his distribution, is about as far from the goalkeeper that this team needs, as is possible. I would love to have been a fly on the wall as BR presented his wishes for the kind of keeper his squad needed to the committee.

I presume they were all listening to Czechoslovakian 70's cartoon music at the same time.

The way we defend, we need a shot stopper first and foremost.  And Mignolet despite his faults is that.

The way we defend would be seriously aided by a goalkeeper that came off his line. I wasn't having a go at Mignolet, because he's good at what he does, but I think anyone could see the problems that arose because we had no GK'ing presence anywhere further forward than about 4 yards out.

Don't want anybody poisoning the group.  That's precisely what he did, and what he will continue to do.  If no-one comes in for him, send him to train with the kids.  I'm surprised Rodgers hasn't done this already tbh.

Yeah, it's definitely a big weakness of his but we needed his shot stopping as shot stopping appears to be our only defensive tactic!

Not arsed with Pepe at this stage, will remember the good times fondly. I don't mind jones, he's no where near as bad as people make out he hasn't ever been at fault for a goal for us by making a howler ala pepe 2012-2013. In fact jones is very commanding of his area and much better than Mignolet on crosses and I remember an absolutely top class save he made in the cup last season at the emirates think it was ozil who hit it, couldn't believe he saved it.

The 3-2 loss in the FA Cup to Oldham in Rodgers first season says different.

Honestly, has Mig made less mistakes than Pepe did in his last season with us? I doubt it. If anything he's been worse than Pepe's last season with us (which was an improvement over the previous 2 or 3 seasons). I realise Pepe's popularity with our fans is at an all-time low but there is no way I would accept the claim Mignolet is the better keeper. He made some shocking errors last season that cost us.

Yes he made more errors, as he did the previous season as well. He's finished as a top keeper and unlike Mignolet hasn't got the excuse of being a relatively young keeper in his first season with a big club. Mignolet was also playing behind one of the most porous Liverpool defences in recent times.

Which isn't to say I think Mignolet is great or I'm totally convinced by him because I'm not. But If Reina is the answer then I despair of the question.

Finally, a point I've raised on the MF, focussing just on the amount of mistakes made by each is a fallacy. When was the last time Reina put in a performance like Mignolet did at the pit last year? Made outstanding saves to keep us in a game? It's not just about the ' mistakes ' made, it's about the shots that Reina lets in that any half competent keeper would save.

Neither are good enough if we plan on competing among the creme de la creme again.  The massive gaps in Ming's game are not going to suddenly disappear and Reina checked out when Rafa left and has no idea how to check back in.

Mignolet is so superior to reina at this point in time it's not even a contest. Anyone who isn't fully behind the manager can fuck off IMO.

The basis of any reasonable discussion.

I disagree. Both are serviceable enough if they're part of a defensive unit that can accommodate their weaknesses and play to their strengths. The list of shaky keepers still plying their trade in the CL is surprisingly long.

I agree Mig's got holes in his game, but I also think he looks more error prone than he actually is due to a certain nerviness. Our defence leaked goals, let players take shots from distance, our fullbacks rarely stopped crosses and our CBs had a habit of clattering people and sticking the ball into our goal. Who wouldn't look nervy?

Give Mig a chance with a settled CB pairing, hopefully with one player marshalling things (Lovren?), and at least one assured fullback before writing him off completely.

Honestly don't know. Not if he doesn't want to be at the club. Very unconvinced with Mignolet.

I have been very impressed with Mignolet, personally. I view him as Rodgers third best signing. He's flawed, certainly. That instinct you have, from having watched a lot of football, that a keeper is dodgy? I had that a few times during the title run in. However, I'm of the view that those flaws look a lot more pronounced, because Rodgers doesn't know how to/has little interest in drilling a back 5, and I'm happy for him to be our number for a few years.
