Agger: Rodgers doesn't think I'm good enough

Daniel Agger’s future at Liverpool is looking increasingly uncertain after the Danish captain reportedly claimed that “the manager doesn’t think I’m good enough”.

When quizzed about his Anfield future by the Danish press, Agger is said to have responded: “I don’t know. That’s up to the manager. I can’t go and put myself on the team sheet.

“It definitely wasn’t great (to be left out of the games against Chelsea and Manchester City), but I don’t make the decisions. I think it is because the manager doesn’t think that I’m good enough. I’m no one’s third choice.”

Agger has frequently been linked with a move away from the club since Brendan Rodgers arrived in 2012, but he was made vice-captain following the retirement of Jamie Carragher last summer and his ‘third choice’ comment doesn’t really stack up. While he had to share playing time with expensive new arrival Mamadou Sakho last season, had he managed to stay fit then the chances are he would have retained his place in the side.

The popular Dane did find himself on the bench for extended periods during the season but usually only after he had originally lost his place through injury (the exception being when he was dropped following a 3-3 draw at Goodison Park).

Agger himself made that very point when speaking to the club’s official website following the final game of the season, ironically after he had been recalled to the side at the expense of Sakho. “Personally it’s been a frustrating season, most of all because of some stupid injuries” he said. “The only positive I can take from it is that I’ve not been out of the team because I’ve played bad - it’s because I’ve been injured - and then afterwards it’s been difficult to get back in because the team is winning, so I can’t do anything about that.”

With Rodgers seemingly unwilling to pair two left footers together at the heart of his defence, Agger and Sakho have been vying for the same position all season and competition for places is set to increase further with the Reds looking to add another high profile centre back to the squad this summer. Southampton’s Dejan Lovren has been strongly linked and the Croatian usually played as the left sided central defender for the Saints last season, meaning he could just as easily partner Martin Skrtel as replace him.

Agger would therefore appear to be most likely casualty of any summer defensive shake up, but even if Rodgers wishes to keep him he will not be able to guarantee him a place in the side and it is now looking increasingly likely that the 30 year old will end his 8 year stay on Merseyside.

What do you think, should Agger be first choice or is it in everyone’s best interests for him to move on this summer?

It's the right time to sell.

He can't form a decent partnership with another CB because he's out injured too much. He's 30, so time isn't on his side or our side. Look at how much Vidic was worth a couple of seasons ago, and then as soon as you reach 31...the value just plummets.

He'd be perfect in Italy, so I expect to be making £7m to £10m out of him.

I love Agger but I can't see him here next season, he won't sit on the bench, think his annual moaning may give him a move this Summer. I'd love him to go to Barcelona in a swap deal for Masch, but he won't be 1st choice there neither.

I’d have Skrtel and Sakho ahead of him after last season.

I love Agger but for the last few seasons he has either been injured or error prone. Others still rate him which means he still has market value and we should definitely cash in. He won’t start next season and his value will plummet with another year as a bit part player.

If he can be used at all towards Sanchez from Barca then great. I’d love him to get another chance at a big club.

He's been a good player and stayed when others were jumping ship, but now might be the best time to part ways.

I think he'd be well suited to Serie A.

sell him to Inter with Lucas + cash for Kovacic and fuck buying Lallana, we'd have way better and younger player who would replace Gerrard in his role in a year or two, some FM magic and good negotiator required tho, no country for Ian Ayre.

Good defender and a great lad and loyal servant.  Sadly injuries have hampered his career. Time may have come now to let him have a move if we can no longer guarantee him a starting place.  I think a move to Italy could help prolong his career at this stage.

Hard to argue with any of that, and I'd apply the exact same to Lucas.

His career here has been beset by injury, long and shot term. His quality when fit, is not in doubt.

If Brendan is looking to the future, raising a few quid for the transfer kitty an saving a few quid on wages looks a likely option.

Somewhere a noggy has just jumped into a fjord

Why's that then?

The Noggies like the Danes about as much as the English like the Scots. I was working in Norway when Christian Poulsen was in Woy's Team and he was regularly booed in the Sports Bars - but not Daniel Agger, as he's a real Red through & through.

Puyol's retired now, Agger would go to Barcelona and play every single week with Pique.  If we could swap him (and money from our side) for Sanchez we'd be onto a winner there.  I can't really see it, but it'd be brilliant!

He's a whinging git, Agger. Fed up hearing it. Go and talk to the manager you whiny scribbled on shithouse.

This seems a bit harsh, but it does annoy me when they don't say jack to the manager, then start moaning to their own countries press.  Just for their agents to use the "lost in translation" rubbish.

Perhaps he has also spoken to Rodgers. I don't think he's said much wrong here, I'd be more annoyed if he didn't give a fuck that he wasn't playing.

Makes sense for both parties to part company, probably.

I would sell. We need a new central defensive partnership. Sakho on one side. A new dominant CB on the other (probably not Skrtel, as too many mistakes). The new partnership should be backed and given plenty of games to become very good. I don't like rotation of central defenders. It's not that sort of position. Building up a good understanding with your partner is a big factor, and if it's always chopping and changing it adds to the mistakes, and we've see too much of that.

New partnership please. Sakho plus the best partner we can find for him.

Skrtel to be third choice.

Toure to be fourth choice, OR moved on, if we think Ilori is ready to come back into the fold. My preference is that a young defender like him continues to gain experience on loan, as if he comes back and doesn't see much action, he will regress. Perhaps Ilori comes back next summer, when Skrtel is sick of being a back up and wants out, similar to Agger now?

Anyhow, Agger - good player, has Liverpool in his heart, but too many injuries and it's time to wipe the slate clean and start with a new partnership.

Probably was a bit harsh, but I do get fed up when players or managers do this sort of shit and then act like the wounded innocent party when they've placed themselves and the club in an untenable position.

If he had spoken to the manager J he wouldn't need to speculate on why he's not playing. He would have been told. If if he has been told and he's still speculating then it's because he doesn't believe what the manager is telling him.

I'm pleased that he gives a fuck that he's not playing, I'm not over the moon that he runs to the press every time he spends a spell on the sidelines.

I guess this is what I should have said. However I burnt my toast and was still reeling from that disaster when I posted my rant.

I'm ok now.

you need to be careful stringers, at your age every piece of toast might be your last. Make 'em count.

*I've no idea how old you are, but fuck it; the bandwagon is rolling, might as well jump on.
