PODCAST: Liverpool 2 Union Saint-Gilloise 0 - Match Reaction and more VAR fallout

Promise we didn’t spend 90 minutes talking about the game! After a quick recap of the Europa League win over Union SG at Anfield, Chris Smith, Dave Usher and John Brennan turn their attention to the ongoing aftermath of the weekend’s officiating scandal.

How have Liverpool played it so far? What needs to happen next to keep the pressure on? And the predictable rounding of the wagons from fans and media around the country. The lads also look ahead to a crucial-looking clash at Brighton on Sunday, which presents a chance to enter the international break on a high.

Surprised Dave didn’t mention the Udogie foul on Gakpo, which unlike the Jones foul, was out of control, reckless, and fucking did endanger an opponent. He is out injured for weeks after it.

I think the panel that adjudicated over the Jones appeal meant that the decision by the referee (after interference from the VAR) to give the red wasn't a clear and obvious error, rather than the foul being clear and obvious so I'd let them off there. Also they are independent of the PGMOL - the cunts.

However, Hooper giving the yellow initially, wasn't a clear and obvious error either, and England, the prick, should not have intervened.

I was probably caught up in the emotion of it on the weekend and I’ve never thought about what Dave said.  I just felt like he’d been biased all game but it was on steroids in the second half.

Here’s my conspiracy theory take.  The reason there’s differing versions of when the ref was told is because at no point in the audio is the ref told including half time.  Darren England has left the VAR room and called the referees.  He’s told them what’s happened and had a private conversation where he’s told him to save his backside.  Give Spurs every decision you can do so that the game goes out of sight and the goal decision doesn’t matter.

The whole situation has just flagged that they need to be independently audited.  The footage and audio should be going to be an independent body while the game is being played.  The fact that we had to wait for them to agree to release the audio is comical.

Something that was pointed out on another podcast.

Pre Webb being appointed it wasn't great but definitely less mistakes and we were not treated much worse than everyone else.

1. Webb appointed.

2. Klopp calls out Tierney - our "reward" is to get Tierney for double the amount of the others.

3. We get less and less decisions

4. Klopp shouts at Brooks,

5. Klopp gets suspended and for the match he is suspended, we get Brooks (and he fails to send off Mings for the boot on Gakpo)

6. This season it's open war on us.

It's absolutely top needle and shitehawking from Webb and the refs.

Dave has more boys than a priests basement. On that Milan baros stat, didn't sturridge score in his first 3 games so isn't he the last player to score or assist in his first 3 games for the club?

Should I read this in the voice of Don Corleone?

By all means read it in the voice of Don Corleone, but not guilty. I don't waste my time on debating with the general public. My blood pressure can't take it.

The other Dan from St Helens is correct though.

My guess is that we know we’re unlikely to get a replay but the threat of legal proceedings (which probably wouldn’t even get to a hearing before the end of the season and would therefore fuck everyone over) is a fantastic weapon hanging over the heads of the Prem and the FA to ‘encourage’ them to agree something we really want such as  independent regulation of PGMOL.

Or at least stop fucking us over pretty much most weeks. Not with the massive decisions, but the time wasting, disruptive 'death by a thousand cuts' shite that goes on.

I think that’s where independent regulation comes in - we can present data and ask why Mo never gets free kicks, why nobody ever gets a second yellow against us, why do we concede more free kicks even though we have more possession, why do we get more than our fair share of certain refs etc.  All the questions we would be wasting our time asking Webb.

And I was howling at the Manscaped stuff. There are enough bald Manc referees in the Premier League for that to work on a weekly basis on so many levels.

Shave your beard close and your balls even closer.

I thought about this too but the logical thing to do would have been to help Liverpool win the game. If we'd have won then we never would have got to a point of having the audio released etc.

Great podcast. The manscaped bit was brilliant. So disrespectful to TLW brand. They seriously have some balls, pun intended.

I was half expecting Dave to mention whether his Dad gave Alisson pelters for some of his dodgy kicking. And also for that missed punch which resulted in the ball bouncing towards goal till Quansah cleared it. Rather, we got some discussion about an incident involving Gomez which I don't even remember.
