Reina claims he's here to stay

The saga over Pepe Reina’s future took a further twist today with the keeper saying that he’s “here to stay” as Napoli refuse to meet Liverpool’s asking price for the Spanish keeper.

Former Reds' boss Rafa Benitez is reportedly keen to take the Spanish keeper to Naples permanently but not at the release clause set by the Reds, which according to the Telegraph is £3.95m. With no vacancies at any of the big Spanish clubs and seemingly very little interest from elsewhere, Reina has found himself back at Liverpool despite having written a farewell letter to the fans a year ago that also contained a parting shot at an unimpressed Brendan Rodgers.

Rodgers reacted to questions about Reina’s future by saying yesterday “Pepe made it clear last year where he is at. We will see what happens over the next few weeks”. It would certainly appear that there is no way back for the former Barcelona and Villarreal keeper, with Liverpool reluctant to pay 100k a week for him to sit on the bench and Rodgers settled on Simon Mignolet as his number one.

Reina, however, claims he is going nowhere. "I have a contract to respect with Liverpool. I'm training well and I am perfectly fine with my team-mates," he said. "I am here to stay. I have not talked to Brendan Rodgers, I've been here for only four days and I am just thinking of training to my best and getting back into shape."

“All the big Spanish teams are covered in my role," he added. "I see it as very difficult to return to Spain. It's normal though that over the years you want to return to where you came from, so we'll see."

theres a difference in wanting to play and the way Pepe has been since we realised he isn't very good any more

Thats more to do with ability. If you saw him for Napoli he was still making the silly mistakes.

He isnt going to be the player he was.

don't doubt it at all (I saw a couple of them myself), I think he is finished, but meaning more a long the lines of the comments he has made since we signed Mignolet, he was a complete prat with that letter, and today for example where he has made a point of saying how he gets on with his team mates but hasn't spoke to the manager, then of course there was the whoring himself out to Barca for years then being upset we signed a younger better keeper and wanted rid

like I say him and Torres came back from world cup 2010 different players and people to before, they must've been kidnapped and replaced by imposters

Remember when Rafa kicked off at Villa because they wouldn't pay the agreed £10m fee for Carson and he refused to sell him to them. I hope we do this out of principle, show these Italian clubs were not all loans and pay offs.

Didn't Villa fuck the Carson deal off at the same time as the penny-pinching, smart alec, I'm cleverer than you approach of Rafa for Barry, coupled obviously with O'Neill being an absolutely monstrous bellend who loves the sound of his own voice?

Anyone would think Benitez had a track record for taking the piss with bids while asking the player in question to act accordingly, that often backfire.  Loan offers for Lucas, Agger at Christmas, Reina, there was the suspicion of him trying to fuck us around for Masch just after he went to Inter too.  I hope he leaves it until the very last minute and someone else makes a marginally better offer, out of principle.

Got a lot of time for Pepe. He was a very good Liverpool goalkeeper and seems like the kind of person I would get on swimmingly with. I think it's time for him to go, though, as it's in everyone's best interests.

They can't afford to sack him :-)

He was after a move to County Rd KFC Allstars but it fell through over an '' all you can eat '' clause. Poor Pepe. The holiday, was funpacked, the contract, still intact

Depeche Mode?

Interesting one this. Pepe is better than Jones. But he's on a lot more money than his current ability/form would warrant. But since we gave him the deal he is right to protect his own interests and draw his money.

If Napoli are playing silly buggers and don't want to pay, it might be best to keep hold of Pepe. But Rodgers more than holds the upper hand, rightly so, in any power struggle with a player.

Sad to see someone who was once very good for us being slagged off. He will end up going on loan to Naples for the rest of his contract with us subbing majority of his wages.

Yes it is. Especially as most of the rest of that really good side fucked off as soon as they could.

To be fair he could have fucked off and earnt the money he's on now. Only his transfer fee would have been syphoned by Statler and Waldorf whilst Woy decided "Bwad was a wery good 'keeper who deswerved his chance at a top top club like Livwerpool or F.C Utewecht."

I'm probably in a minority here, but I don't get the Brad Jones hate. Maybe because he's a Hodgson buy, I don't know. I'm not saying he's a great keeper because he clearly isn't, but whenever he's played, he's done about as well as could be expected and hasn't let anyone down. In fact, I remember I very nearly came out of sheer relief in that FA Cup semi v Everton when right we after Carroll scored in the last min, he came steaming through a sea of bodies to pluck a cross from the sky. When I hear people go on about how we need a second choice keeper, I do agree, but for me, it's way down the list of priorities. If a half-decent old bastard like a Mark Schwarzer or Brad Friedel became available, I'd be all over them, but I wouldn't pay money for one while other areas of the squad need addressing.

As for Pepe, it's pretty sad how everything has turned out. I think it's pretty obvious there's a bit of needle between him and Brendan and you can speculate all you want how it started, but to us fans, it only ever became apparent in that open letter.

Personally, I think Pepe got soft a while back. He was comfortably number one here and seemed to accept his role as back-up to Casillas so there was no challenge for him and as a result, I can't help feel complacency seeped into his game. I remember watching Napoli v Swansea in the Europa League last season and De Guzman scored the type of goal against him we had become accustomed to seeing: hit with power, straight at him, yet still allowed to go straight through his body.

In an ideal world, it's be great to still have him at the club, but it's just not practical to have a £90k reserve. He really needs moving on, but it's probably easier said than done. No way I'd send him back to Napoli though, just to send a message. I love Rafa for what he did for this club, but he's quite clearly been taking the piss with some of his offers for our players.

Jones won't be back up keeper next season by design, it's been reported in several places that Brendan wants 3 keepers, and it's obvious which number Brad would be in the pecking order.

Presumably we're waiting on getting Pepe sorted before we try to buy another, to prevent our hand becoming weakened further and ensure there's no chance we end up paying 4 keepers next season.

Reina is better than Jones - total no brainer.

Totally not convinced with Mignolet though - he needs to get fucking angry and shouting at the back for - as it is he looks shit scared of any of our centre backs.

Rogers seems to trust Mignolet so I think we're stuck with him and Jones for next season.

I don't think anyone is claiming that Jones is better than Reina, more to do with saying that having a back-up keeper on £90k per week at a club not owned by an oligarch/ sheikh is fucking ludicrous.

I must be in the minority with you.

I'd go as far as saying that whoever thinks Reina is a better keeper than Jones certainly isn't basing it on their most recent performances for this football club.

What exactly is he supposed to do?  He wants to leave, he's made that abundantly clear but no cunt wants to buy him for the price we want.

Considering what his wages must be I'm not sure why we're hung up on a £3.9m fee, it's hardly like we value him at £20m and Napoli want him for a tenner. It's obviously going to be the best thing for us and him if he goes, so why not just sell him for what we can get and move on.

Pepe's comments, rafa's comments and brendan's comments are all just part of the dance. Everyone knows how this ends, the soap opera that will evolve over the next 4 weeks can just be ignored, it will all be lies and more lies.

i remember on that 'being liverpool' programme a bit in the dressing room (half time I think) when Rodgers talks to Reina and Reina just walks off, leaving old Rodgefish looking a bit embarrassed.

I was told I was seeing too much that wasn't there at the time and maybe I was, but this adds a new perspective.
