Enrique: Liverpool should be wary of making big money midfield signings like Moises Caicedo

Jose Enrique believes that a big money signing will not be the answer to Liverpool’s midfield issues.

The Reds truly miserable start to 2023 hit a new low on Saturday afternoon after a insipid 3-0 defeat to Brighton, a performance that Jurgen Klopp described as one of the worst in his managerial career.

The defeat laid bare everything that is currently not working in Jurgen Klopp’s side, from the sloppiness in defence, the dysfunctional midfield and a front line missing some key pieces and generally being ineffective.

Confidence can be a wonderful thing when you have it and when you dont, the walls feel like they are crashing down around you.

Yesterday's opponents are currently riding the crest of a wave, playing fluid football and getting their just rewards.

One man at the heart of that is Moises Caicedo, the Ecuadorian international who is coveted by all the big teams in the division.

While the elite teams by and large end up signing these type of players, a club like Brighton deserve a lot of credit for putting in all the legwork by identifying them when they are at the beginning of their career, and end up with a very tidy profit out of it.

However Enrique believes just throwing big money at a problem such as what Chelsea are seemingly doing is not the solution for his old club as the Metro (via FairBettingSites) reported.

“The problem Liverpool have, in my opinion, is that they need a few midfielders and not just one. Moises Caicedo? I think this type of player is unrealistic and you cannot go and spend £100 million or something like that.

"Because isn’t that what Brighton are going to ask for? I would not risk it, I think there are other players out there. Another player who was linked was [Ismael] Bennacer from Milan as well, who is playing for the champions of Serie A.

“He’s never played in the Premier League, but he has played at a very high level.”

Enrique cited the under-par performances of Marc Cucurella as a prime example of his point.

“Look at what is happening with [Marc] Cucurella at Chelsea at the moment. That’s what happens when you sign players from smaller teams, even if they play in the Premier League.

‘It is not the same to play for a smaller team as it is to play for one of the biggest teams.’

With Jurgen Klopp stating in his Brighton pre-match press conference that it is highly unlikely that there will be any more incomings in this window, the debate and discussion of which players suit Liverpool best is set to rumble on for a few months at least.

He is a snidey cunt. Wasnt it him with that horrific 'dying swan' act when Henderson got booked for barely touching him?

Yep.  Absolute shithouse breakdancing on the floor.  I wouldn’t even bother with the cunt after that let alone the £65m he’d supposedly cost.

How much did Brighton pay for Caicedo. We don't need world class to improve our situation. Bloody Lallana legged our midfield yesterday, ours have too many miles on the clock and Elliot is way way too slow and easily knocked off the ball, he has zero acceleration in the first few yards to compensate for it either. Same can be said with Jones he never looks like he can get about he just smiles into spaces and gets rid of it in the sane direction he recieved it mostly. If everyone was fit you'd still look at our squad and say this is imbalanced in terms of players for positions and age groups.

About £7-8mill (inc loan fee) and around the same for Alexis Mac Allister but that was in 1998.

Good luck getting that price when the name ‘Liverpool FC’ is mentioned, assuming we had a fit for purpose South American scouting network.

Might cost us a bit more but surely we can be smarter scouting. It feels like our scouting system is whoever plays well against us or it pops up onscreen someone might be cheap. Keep hearing we can't take risks on unknowns yet play Elliot or give games to known failures like Ox and Keita we gave Milner a contract taking him to 37. The biggest risk you can take is to stand still and watch while others catch up and over take. There's something wrong at the club.

I think ourselves and other ‘big’ clubs often prefer to see how a South American player does in Portugal or with a smaller English club.

Surely it would make economic sense to cut out the middle man every now and then. Some of Brighton’s scouts must now be pretty well sought after too. Brilliantly run little club, great football at times too.

Caicedo isn’t a major signing for a big club. We’re not going to get three midfielders to solve our problems for £8m, £10m and £12m. It’s not 1998.

Probably true. But he’s probably massively overpriced, due to playing in the PL and because of all the attention he’s been getting. Brighton is also a well functioning unit, which will make the players look even better. Bit like when our full backs were the best in the world a couple of years ago.

I reckon there are probably 50 midfielders around the different European leagues that are more or less the same level and can do the same job as Caicedo, and getting one of those for anywhere between 10 and 50 million is definately a better idea than getting Caicedo for 100.

As an example look no further than Wijnaldum and the job he did here for 5 seasons, clearly never a world class player that would go for record transfer fees, but did a great job for us.

Could get Caicedo, McAllister and Enzo Fernandez for those amounts in 2022 and they’d have improved ours immediately

We don't have a pot to piss in and he is talking about £100m on one player. We all know a midfielder should have been bought in 2021, another one in 2022. We don't need an ex footballer to make a genius statement that we need more than one midfielder.

But we don't have a pot to piss in so it doesn't matter.

Have to say I was disgusted at this lad's play acting, being injured after Hendo's tackle on him yesterday. Someone on the match thread said he was break dancing on the ground which was a very apt description, I thought.

Other Brighton players were at it. It was like 1970's play acting at it's best, double repeated roll overs, flayling arms and legs all over the place.

You look back at Gini how he could hold onto a ball in tight spaces no matter the pressure he was under it was next level. I never really appreciated it because he would lay it off 5 yards and you'd think what was gained but its what wasn't lost. His ability to keep the ball was huge, I under appreciated what he offered.

Very good point. And one more thing that the current midfield is lacking. I rate Thiago highly, but this is a weakness in his play. Not to mention Keita, which should be first choice based on the last few games, he’s terrible at this, pushed off the ball way too easily. Fabinho’s feet are simply too slow, and Henderson doesnt have the technical ability nor the mentality to come out on top in tight situations.
