Agger: Rodgers doesn't think I'm good enough

Daniel Agger’s future at Liverpool is looking increasingly uncertain after the Danish captain reportedly claimed that “the manager doesn’t think I’m good enough”.

When quizzed about his Anfield future by the Danish press, Agger is said to have responded: “I don’t know. That’s up to the manager. I can’t go and put myself on the team sheet.

“It definitely wasn’t great (to be left out of the games against Chelsea and Manchester City), but I don’t make the decisions. I think it is because the manager doesn’t think that I’m good enough. I’m no one’s third choice.”

Agger has frequently been linked with a move away from the club since Brendan Rodgers arrived in 2012, but he was made vice-captain following the retirement of Jamie Carragher last summer and his ‘third choice’ comment doesn’t really stack up. While he had to share playing time with expensive new arrival Mamadou Sakho last season, had he managed to stay fit then the chances are he would have retained his place in the side.

The popular Dane did find himself on the bench for extended periods during the season but usually only after he had originally lost his place through injury (the exception being when he was dropped following a 3-3 draw at Goodison Park).

Agger himself made that very point when speaking to the club’s official website following the final game of the season, ironically after he had been recalled to the side at the expense of Sakho. “Personally it’s been a frustrating season, most of all because of some stupid injuries” he said. “The only positive I can take from it is that I’ve not been out of the team because I’ve played bad - it’s because I’ve been injured - and then afterwards it’s been difficult to get back in because the team is winning, so I can’t do anything about that.”

With Rodgers seemingly unwilling to pair two left footers together at the heart of his defence, Agger and Sakho have been vying for the same position all season and competition for places is set to increase further with the Reds looking to add another high profile centre back to the squad this summer. Southampton’s Dejan Lovren has been strongly linked and the Croatian usually played as the left sided central defender for the Saints last season, meaning he could just as easily partner Martin Skrtel as replace him.

Agger would therefore appear to be most likely casualty of any summer defensive shake up, but even if Rodgers wishes to keep him he will not be able to guarantee him a place in the side and it is now looking increasingly likely that the 30 year old will end his 8 year stay on Merseyside.

What do you think, should Agger be first choice or is it in everyone’s best interests for him to move on this summer?

I'm pleased that he gives a fuck that he's not playing, I'm not over the moon that he runs to the press every time he spends a spell on the sidelines.

I can't say I give much of a fuck either way. We see a tiny, distorted, fraction of the conversations via the media, and frankly its much easier to just not bother trying to work out who is in the right/wrong or who is telling the truth.

Its just a tedious facet of modern football, getting annoyed with individuals seems pointless.

you need to be careful stringers, at your age every piece of toast might be your last. Make 'em count.*I've no idea how old you are, but fuck it; the bandwagon is rolling, might as well jump on.

Be my guest.

Let's just say that after a long TSOP après-match session, there will be plenty on here gibbering incoherently before falling asleep in a pool of their own urine. Meanwhile I will be striding purposefully and in a straight line in clothes that bear scrutiny towards my next adventure. Or pub.

Why's that then?

The Noggies like the Danes about as much as the English like the Scots. I was working in Norway when Christian Poulsen was in Woy's Team and he was regularly booed in the Sports Bars - but not Daniel Agger, as he's a real Red through & through.

I quite like the Scots, it's they that don't like us.

probably the most overrated player in our entire history.
The way some go on about him anyone would think he's Alan Hansen crossed with Bobby Moore.

He had a brilliant few months about 6 years ago. Since then he's rarely taken his performance level bast "decent".

He's a good defender, nothing more. We can do much, much better.

As an aside, I've never liked him as a person, I've always thought he was a prick.

I have no real evidence of this. Well, up until i read this anyway - He's just always struck me as a prick.

We should sell Agger only if we can secure Lovren or Vertonghen, and we get a good fee out of it. It'd be a shame to see him leave, because he's always showed loyalty to us in the past, and probably wants that loyalty reciprocated.

The only (real) trophy we've won with Agger in the side is a single League Cup.

He's a good player, but loses his man too often for me. Injury prone and nearer the end of his career than the beginning.

He should have been sold a couple of summers ago when there was big money on the table for him.

I and others said at the time he is injury prone and cant be relied on which has been shown to be true, great servant and I loved his commitment but he needs to go.

Him for Masherano would be excellent business for us. The option to have Masch at either CB or CDM would be great.

Mascherano at centre back for us in the premier league would make this season defence look solid.

Masch against physical types like Carroll yes... but Masch would do well at centre back against us, because we have a team of midgets, so it's all relative.
