PODCAST: The Luis Diaz Episode (aka Transfer Window Recap)

The window slammed shut and the Reds had one shiny new signing, one very near miss and a couple of lads left on loan. Divock is still here though, thank God, as you never know when we might need him to don his Superman cape and save the day.

Chris Smith is joined by Paul Natton and Julian Richards to discuss the ins and outs and the potential future ramifications in the forward line beyond this season.

Come on then, what do we think Diaz arriving means for Sadio? We discussed a lot of the permutations, but what do you all think?

Moved on in the summer?

Stays til the end of his contract?

Kicks on again and earns himself a new deal and it's more likely Bobby is moved on?

Also, if you're Nat Phillips and you're given the choice between Newcastle and Bournemouth, which are you picking?

I think Bobby will leave at the end of his contract but what happens to Sadiio may well depend on whether Mo renews.  If Mo doesn't renew then I reckon we'll extend Sadio's contract but if he does then the arrival of Jota and Diaz makes the departure  of Sadio far more likely.

Nat. I always thought it would be Bournemouth. It's the smart move.

If Bournemough get promoted and he plays well then he'll probably get signed by them as a first teamer and may well have a great future with them. If they don't get promoted, he's no worse off than he is today. If he signed for Newcastle and they get relegated he'll get tagged as a relegated player.  If they don't get relegated then even if he gets a contract it'll probably be as a squad player after they splash the cash again next summer.

Just listening to it through Spotify and the sound levels are all over the show again Dave.   Not moaning for the sake of it honestly, but if there's any money to be made off number of listeners etc (genuinely don't know how these things work) then it can be a bit off-putting as you're up and down constantly on the volume button.

Paul is on top note and gets turned down to vol 38, Jules in the middle gets turned up to 52, and Chris is like a whisper so gets turned up to 68.  You can only imagine the shock when Paul comes straight in after Chris!  Anyone else?  Maybe it's my equipment.

Just thought I'd mention it anyway, all the best and thanks for sharing lads.

I think he's Mane's replacement in theory. They look to be quite similar in profile. I have a tough time believing Klopp will sell Mane because of his loyalty but I have an even tougher time believing that Klopp will keep 5 forwards. I think there will be some big clubs interested in Mane with a year left on his deal and all parties will cordially agree to part.

Firmino, I'm inclined to believe will stay. It's hard to predict really, though, because we have 3 attackers with one year left. There's lots of different outcomes possible.

Chris is a bit quiet but I just assumed he'd decided to style himself on Whispering Bob Harris.  Paul is a bit loud but I just assumed he was imagining himself trying to get the attention of a class of adolescents.  Jules is of course spot on.

I think it's looking ever more likely that Salah will be off (and for more than the £40m mentioned, probably double) so Sadio stays.  I think Bobby will stay until the end of his contract as I can't see us getting a good enough offer to let him go.

Nat made the right choice.

Just so we're all clear. £40m for a player in the final year of his contract is my guess at a fair estimate factoring in the player's age and wage demands. City offered £100m for Kane who has years left on his contract.

If you are Liverpool though, are you selling Mo for £40m or would you just keep him for the last year and let him go on a free?  Especially as you still would have half a chance (maybe) of him signing a new contract at the end of that year?

Same with Mo - why would he leave, when he could stay a year, hopefully win some stuff and then have more flexibility of where to sign and probably a higher wage?

I don't think they will, they'd let him leave for free and get that extra year whilst blaming him and his agent for their greed before selling.

Well I do agree as he's potentially worth far more to us in that final year than £40m, however, this is FSG we're talking about.  If they think we will qualify for the Champions League without him then there is every chance that they would consider selling him at cut price rather than lose him on a free.  It depends what their ambitions are.

Their ambitions are to increase the value of their asset in the most cost effective way possible. Same as always.

Fortunately for us fans winning teams are worth more and make more money. So it will just come down to what their spreadsheet thinks Mo’s input and value is to their investment.

It's not just the final year that's the issue, it's the 200k a week in wages. That makes it a compelling case to get him off the books and buy 2 younger players at 100k each

A lot will depend in Mo, but I can't see a situation where he leaves unless the club HE wants to join agree pay him close to what he'd get as a Bosman AND gives us a decent enough fee.

I don't think we'll sell for less than 50mil cash up front and only if we have his replacement(s) secured first.

See, it doesn't sound like that when I'm editing it and I just can't figure out how to fix it. It's doing my head in.

It isn't just you, it's a problem for others too.

Also, Nat did the smart thing. He'll have fun playing in a team winning most weeks and enjoying life. Why would you opt for a relegation battle over that?

Something has to give with the original front three. If Mo signs a new contract then at least one of Sadio and Bobby are going this summer I think. If Mo doesn't sign, then I have no idea what will happen. They might sell Bobby and extend Sadio in that scenario.

I enjoyed this one.

Without blowing smoke up arses, Paul and Jules are really polished in how they discuss issues. For a “fans” podcast, they feel like proper pros.  Really good. Chris chairs it well, although I had the same sound level issues listening through Spotify so it felt like Chris wasn’t really listening to Paul and Jules towards the end when he’d quietly say, after a pause, that he agrees with them before moving the conversation on. I kept thinking of Wayne and Garth being interviewed by Handsome Dan.

Jurgen hasn't never sold one his boys that didn't want to leave. The fact we wanted Diaz for the summer suggests Sadio is going on a free at the end of next season. I don't think the signing has any impact on Mo's situation.

The sound was fine for me, I listened to it on podbean right here.

What am I missing? Why does the signing of Diaz mean Mo, Sadio or Bobby are off yet the signing of Jota doesnt raise the same doubt?

Jota has really hit the ground running banging goals in. Hopefully Diaz does the same but Im not sure whether he will or he wont until he starts playing.

The way I see it, Diaz likely means one of Sadio or Bobby will leave in the summer, not Mo. I still think Mo will sign. How does letting one of the best if not the best player in the world leave the club grow FSG's investment? It lessens it?

Mo's said it isnt just money. He wants to see top players brought in. I cant believe he doesnt see Jota and Diaz as top players. It's not like Mo was a class of player he is now when we bought him. He was pretty much the Jota \ Diaz type player.
