Report: Liverpool open to sell Joel Matip in the summer

Joel Matip could be one of the senior squad members making a exit in the summer according to a new report.

Matip is currently in his seventh season at the Reds after arriving on a free transfer from German club Schalke.

While virtually unknown in England, Jurgen Klopp was fully aware of his abilities when he was in charge at Borussia Dortmund and identified him as a valued signing in the early stages of his Liverpool tenure.

That decision has reaped dividends as the Cameroon international has become one of the best free transfers of the modern era.

Not only has the 32 year-old impressed in a footballing  sense, he has won his way into the hearts of the Liverpool faithful for his surging runs from the heart of defence, his general humble nature and his ability to not taking himself too seriously.

At his best Matip has been undoubtedly one of the best defenders in the league and at times in Europe, but because of the fact that he plays alongside a colossus such as Virgil Van Dijk, his qualities get somewhat overlooked.

If there is one knock on Matip it is the fact that he is very fragile when it comes to injuries.

While making 181 appearances for the Reds, he has also missed over 100 games with injuries, some of which that have come in the most innocuous of fashion.

Just like the team in general, Matip has underperformed this campaign, lacking his normal composure and being physically overpowered by opposition forwards at times.

Klopp is blessed to have a fine contingent of central defenders at his disposal but with a squad overall on the cards with the aim to lower the average age, Matip could be someone that might make way.

Football Insider says that an offer in the region of £15 million could be enough to tempt the club to sell Matip whose contract ends in the summer of 2024.

The defensive overhaul is said to include another popular figure in Nat Phillips who will be put on the market once again for interested suitors.

Makes sense - ageing and injury prone.

We run the risk of walking into same problems at centre half that we have in midfield - key men ageing and unreliable/injury prone cover and not sorting before becomes a total mess.

Starting the refresh ASAP and getting us set up for next 5 years would be a good idea.

Is it any wonder squad morale is through the floor? Players could be sold, leaving etc. not good if these stories are true and they’re being leaked.

If they stopped playing like cunts they'd have no need to worry about being sold.

In fairness to Matip, his form has only deteriorated this season. He was brilliant for us between his too-regular injury periods. He’s arguably been better than Van Dijk since his return from that derby injury.

His fee isn’t even going to pay for an adequate replacement for himself.

The club will get very little for him but he has to go. He has been great at times but equally frustrating, plus he has an awful injury record.

His injury record has been frustrating and obviously he's had the odd sticky period here, now being one, but you're doing him a disservice there, in my opinion. Overall he's been a very good signing and a big part of our success under Klopp.

We can't afford to let centre half position go stale and end up with same fucking mess as we have in midfield.

Reality is we have 2 ageing centre halves, 1 of who is very injury prone and we have two young ones 1 of who is injury prone and who's form has fallen off a cliff and another who whilst good is proving to be somewhat injury prone.

Matip will be 32 by time next season starts.

VVD will also be 32 by time next season starts.

We could easily find ourselves in a bit of trouble in next year or two if we don't do something now and we should learn from the midfield clusterfuck.

I'd be looking at bringing in 2 high level centre halves over next 2/3 windows in that prime/peak age of 27 or so and Matip going and maybe Gonmez too - although Gomez's ability to also play RB if he is happy to be 4th choice centre half makes him potentially still useful, although he looks a shell of the player he was and what we hoped he would become right now.

My first thought when I saw this article is absolutely nobody is going to pay 15m for him. He just needs too much managing to stay fit. Regardless of if his talent is on the way out, it just doesn't make sense to pay 15m for an injury prone player who's available on a bosman in 12 months. If we want him out, we need to just release him imo.

Sadly for him due to his injuries nowhere near as much as he could have been.

For example he barely played in season we won title.

Managed just 9 league appearances totalling a mere 703 mins.

Yes,his form has also dropped off a cliff these season after a few stellar but injury blighted seasons.

It of course should not have to...

If we get a quid for him we will have made a profit.

Not entirely sure if Klopp would be allowed to spend it though.

Probably time to let him go if someone wants him. If not, let him stay for another season and leave on a free after that.

Anyway we should get a new CB in the summer. Someone in the 20-24 age bracket, good enough to challenge for a starting place, or at least third choice behind Van Dijk and Konate.

Problem is we probably wont get the new CB in this summer unless Matip leaves. If that is the case we should just release him if no one wants him.

Most likely scenario however is probably we keep him for another season and dont get any new CBs in. As someone said above, same strategy as we’ve applied to the midfield.

He's not the only player who's form has crashed though. Vvd and Gomez haven't been great and konate has continued to miss more than he plays.

Anyone who comes in as 3rd choice needs to be good enough to be 2nd choice because konate is never fit.

Agree about the first part and hope you’ll be proven wrong on the last part.

He was available (and played all but one of) the opening 7 league games of that season. He picked up an injury in October and was back in the squad for the Manc game in January. Gomez had established an excellent partnership with Van Dijk at that stage so Matip was on the bench until the Covid break in March.  He wasn't unavailable for all of the games that he didn't play.

He was unavailable due to injury for 19 out of 38 games and 'not in the squad' for a further 3.

Was on bench for 7.

Following season of course was even worse when after missing over half ganes before end of Jan with injury he then missed rest of season from end of Jan with injury.

Sadly it has been too often case with him during his time here.

Konate has a worrying injury history.

Had 2 long term injuries at Leipzig.

And of course this season has been a disaster for the lad.

He's managed 26 PL & CL matches since he joined us - out of I think 77 matches. I realise some weeks he was on the bench, but again that's because he & matip were being nursed and managed through fixtures. The lad looks a talent when he's on the pitch, but he's never on the pitch. As he wasn't at RBL.

Yeah last season they shared duties - Matip played most of the league games but then Konate would more often do the cups or europe.

To be fair to him he started 11 league games and was on bench for 26 - so his availablility was fine last season.

He started 8 of our 13 european cup games and was on bench for 4 of the other 5.

He started all 6 in fa cup.

In Milk Cup he only started 1 of the 6 but was in squad for all and came on as a sub in 3, was unused sub in other 2.

This season of course has been a disaster he has only been available in league for 7 of our 20 games - will be 7 of 21 after tonight.

Personally I think they know he can't play 2 games a week. So while he was available (as was matip) for most of last season, you can't put them on the pitch. Nobody wants to rotate centre backs.
