Reds want Johnson to take paycut?

Reports today claim that Liverpool want to offer Glen Johnson a new contract - but only if he is prepared to take a put cut.

Various media outlets report that the Reds are keen to open talks with the England full back about extending a deal that runs until the summer of 2015, but not on its current terms which see Johnson earn anywhere between £110-139k a week depending on which report you believe.

Liverpool had to beat off interest from big spending Chelsea and Manchester City to sign Johnson from Portsmouth in 2009, and the contract he signed at that time reflected that. He signed an extension to that in 2011 - presumably either on the same terms or improved ones - but he's 29 now and will be almost 31 when his present deal runs out.

It's highly unlikely that Liverpool would offer the same terms or higher when it comes to re-negotiating as presently only Steven Gerrard is earning more. The club have been actively reducing the wage bill in the last couple of years and many of the higher earners have been moved on, so it's unsurprising that they are looking at Johnson's situation.

Whilst he is unquestionably overpaid, Johnson is nevertheless a key component of Brendan Rodgers' side and his absence is hurting the team at the moment, with Rodgers admitting; “Glen is the type of player you don’t realise what you’re missing until he’s not in the team.”

“He was outstanding against Manchester United so it will be great when we get him back. He’s got the cast off his foot now and he’s working hard to be back in the next few weeks.”

On the subject of contract talks, Rodgers simply stated; “It’s something the club will take up at the right time. I’m not sure where it’s at.”

I think it's very likely that he is earning 100k plus. Don't forget, half of that is going to be taken in tax before he even sees a penny.

It'd still get you quite a few toilet seats though SD.

I am worried though that the owners are starting to look like they know the price of everything but the value of nothing.

Anyone who 'see's the clubs side' on this....one question.

Who do you replace him with? Hes the best right back in the Prem for a start. Martin Kelly? Dont make me laugh, Im his biggest fan and used to know him when we was kids but he's injury prone to say the least and turned out a bit of a knob character wise I hear.

Andre? hahaha Im not even sure he's premiership material a bit Jon Ostemboresque to me thus far, lets hope not but thats all it is, hope.

I dont see anyone else, not in our league or anywhere else that could replace him, Daniel Alves? Make a bid and see if he will come for 50 G's.

Rodgers seems to know less that the journos about it (Unless he being koi) he's firmly in his plaice isnt he as I dont think he wants to lose him, it will lose him his job? All manner of

I dont know what Henry is smokin but I want some.thorts running thru me hed.

Or perhaps some potent shit gettin passed around 'Tha Committee'.

Its ok, theres plenty of FSG bellwhiffers ready to q up with youtube clips under their arms to tell us there's a big demand for him to be sold and he hasnt been any good for the last 3 seasons etc,etc

Not so.

He is a very good footballer, but there are many who could do the job of specialist full back for a fraction of his wages.

He is a wing back, who isn't played in that position. He would be far more effective as a midfielder than as a defender where, at the highest level, he is caught out of defensive position too frequently.

Probably end up selling him for about 6 million and paying double for Nathaniel Clyne because he'll accept 40k per week. These yanks are a disgrace with their obsession over the wage bill.

Clyne is a pretty good full back though; I wouldn't pay Johnson anymore than 90,000 per week with his injury record and age.  His contract is up when he's 31, he's a player that relies a long on athletism, whose to say by then he will still be the brilliant player he is today.

If he wants a new deal, he should take a pay cut.  If he hasn't signed on reduced terms by the summer - sell him.  We'd still get about £8-10m for him.

Why pay 40k per week when we could offer to loan him and pay half his wages........?

I don't believe SD was addressing the moral implications of earning such wages, more the practical difficulties of attracting a worthwhile replacement.

Fair enough - but I'm not about to pass up any opportunity to (a) vent my spleen about rich people; and ( b ) post that Spongebob clip.
