PODCAST: Liverpool 2 Rangers 0 - Match Reaction

A routine win and much needed improvement in performance as the goals from Trent and Mo were enough to see off an outmatched Rangers side at Anfield.

Chris Smith is joined by Julian Richards and TLW Editor Dave Usher to go through all the main talking points, including the new formation, a big night for Trent and a lively but ultimately fruitless outing for Darwen. The lads also look ahead with some trepidation to the weekend's clash with Arsenal.

For the Arsenal game. Bring the big shit bastard on when we’re 3 up. I get defending Nunez but it’s nothing to do with instant gratification. You go on your gut instinct and after two starts and a few cameos, he looks nowhere near good enough. The last striker I felt similar was fucking Andriy Voronin.

I thought Firmino was awful when he came on, could barely control the ball.

I remember when Nunez signed he made a couple of comments in interviews saying he couldn't wait to play alongside Bobby - maybe that's an option? But then what to do with Diogo? And I still think Salah is too far away from the goal - he's got so much to do before he even gets a chance at goal. This is one of our greatest goalscorers and he's about 40 yards from the goal.

Thought the atmosphere was really good. The royal family chant was the highlight. I couldn't make out any of the Rangers songs, thought they were a bit disappointing as away fans go.

Great shout on those who have second teams, particularly those who's are Rangers/Celtic. I had to grow up with that nonsense in Belfast and was never arsed with either of them but knew why they were choosing a side

Even weirder would be English people who have one as a second team. Mind boggling.

Can’t be too harsh on them, they’re still in deep mourning at the death of their beloved queen.

Dad, is that you?

"Two starts and a few cameos". In a new (struggling) team. In a new league. In a new country where he doesn't speak the language. With the pressure of being a club record signing. Plus he's 23 years old and a very inexperienced 23 at that.

It's just way too soon to be making snap judgements, especially when he's scored two goals and could easily have had a load more with a bit more luck/composure.

I'm not worried about him. Not yet anyway. Way too soon for that, especially when I've seen enough to make me think he can score loads once he's settled and a bit less eager to impress.

I think the space in behind and in the channels could suit Darwin against arsenal, but also Jota and Bobby love playing them. Tough one.

Dave nailed it, he's not Benteke, who started okay and then fell away as the pressure got to him and saw him balloon every 1 on 1 we gave him, he's hitting clean shots and testing the keeper.

The amount of shots he's having per 90 is off the charts, but its not like he's just blamming it from anywhere whenever he gets the ball. They are pretty much all situations where he should be shooting. That will translate to goals when he settles down a bit.

We know he can finish, we saw it against us for Benfica when he looked lethal. That's because he was more relaxed and confident. Once he gets that here, I'm sure he'll be sound. He needs that signature game to get him rolling though. Hopefully Sunday, but if not then City the week after would do.

Good pod that.

Chris reducing 800 years of British occupation of Ireland to a few shenanigans is the view of history we all need.

I thought Jules's was over the top on Nunez.  I appreciate he was doing a bit of devils advocate but his comments on all his shots being just a blast hit and hope were wrong.  The save from the great through ball from Salah was a case of Darwin doing everything right and playing it low between the keepers legs but "Andy Goram" getting a lucky foot on it that some diverted it around the post.  Same for the great take and shot from Hendersons sublime clipped pass.  As for liking him to Cisse???? Jesus.

Also, his disgusting, vile rant against secretaries should get him a 3 pod ban.  They are integral and good people who play a vital supporting role.  The James Milner's of the admin world, as it were.  He should apologise.

The comments about Liverpool fans with Celtic or Rangers as their second team were spot on.  As an Irish man, the plastic paddy, faux nationalist crap that surrounds Celtic is embarrassing and pathetic.  Every Sinn Fein meeting you see a bunch of twats in Celtic jerseys, and every orange parade you see a bunch of twats in Rangers jerseys.  All as bad as each other.  Liverpool fans attaching themselves to that as their "second team" are a dose.  I run a mile when they say it.

Tried a disclaimer at the end, but immediately undercut it by talking about weirdos with orange sashes and drums. Will be getting a wheelie bin through the window from the Miami chapter of the Orange Lodge.

Hopefully they’ll bump into the Miami Chapter of the Fenian Brotherhood who are there to do the same thing and they just batter each other and leave your windows alone.

I briefly toyed with picking an old firm second team in the 90s as it seemed to be the done thing but realised they were both shite so couldn't be arsed. It's like being asked to choose your favourite Steps song.

It's mad when you think how sectarian liveroool was up until about 20 years ago, then it largely just vanished. In Speke there were CofE schools and Catholic schools and they'd constantly kick each other's heads in. There's no CofE schools left there now at all and nobody is arsed either way. My Mrs can't believe it when I tell her what it was like back then.

When I lived in Glasgow you'd see loads of Scottish Rangers fans in England shirts on Old Firm day.  They're a weird bunch to be fair.

That answers all of Dave’s questions then

Defo rooting against Mel

Defo like having a load of England fans in the away end

Defo the whole of Scotland must dispose them

Defo bad weirdos

Maybe put it on Twitter.

Imagine!

I've seen some examples of Rangers twitter this week and fucking hell it's horrendous. Hillsborough shouts and all sorts of mad stuff. I saw one laying into an Everton fan because our derby is 'too friendly'.

Only a minority of pricks but it still took me aback as I didn't realise they had beef with us. Naive of me really I suppose given their love of the monarchy.

I always hated the chant. I did have that bobble hat though when I was a kid. Had a Rangers one too when Souness went there.

I had the Liverpool Celtic but never the Rangers one.

I’d go with this front four:

       Darwin

Jota Bobby Mo
