PODCAST: Ajax 0 Liverpool 3 - Match Reaction

The Reds bounced back from the weekend's loss by thumping Ajax to advance to the knock out stages of the Champions League.

Chris Smith is joined by Stu Montagu and TLW Editor Dave Usher to reflect on a nice evening's work for Klopp's side as goals from Salah, Nunez and Elliott ensured safe passage into the last 16.

Fucking weird hair obsessed pricks. You can trace the stages of Dave’s life through his hair references on TLW:

Early days = rattling on about his alice band every week.

Established period in his 30s & 40s =  rattling on about Paddy Berger’s hair and comparing himself to Milan Baros in every fucking match report.

Post fanzine years of middle aged creep when he finally gave up on the idea he might one day join Bon Jovi and went for the Postman Pat haircut (AKA “The golf years”) = mention variations on the word bald every single week.

In other words, he defines himself by his hair and is terrified of losing it so he projects his inadequacies on to others.

I might start doing a Jackass and bringing a pair of clippers to the game to buzz you when you’re not expecting it. Right on the top to force a full Lampard on you.

And you can get fucked too Monty. You’re borderline these days. I heard you chuckling in the background. Give it two years and you’ll be laughing on the other side of your face

Disappointed in Chris most of all though. Dave clearly lives his life in fear and deserves our pity. Always thought you had too much self-confidence for hair paranoia though, mate.

I’m off to watch a Jason Statham movie. Far more entertaining than this podcast shit.

Always nice to have the unusual case of listening to a pod after we’ve actually won a match.

I think it was Stu that (rightly) mentioned that their big chance at the start was created by pure luck.  And it seems to happen to us loads at the moment. The opposition get these perfect chances from weird deflections from our players.  Later in the game it happened again when a 50 / 50 challenge near the halfway line resulted in the most perfect through ball down the line for Ajax?  I’m getting sick of it.

One thing Dave mentioned towards the end of the pod when you were talking about the Leeds game and how we might not see Nunez because we thought we’d see him against Forest when he was taken off early against West Ham, but then didn’t – but didn’t Klopp say at full time against West Ham that Nunez had picked up a knock?  I have a memory of that because I remember thinking we won’t see him verses Forest?

Anyway, I too am gutted when Darwin doesn’t start.  While he’s had a difficult start, he just causes mayhem on the pitch.  And he’s getting goals.  Yes, it was a terrible miss, but we know he can hit the ball cleanly and well so those will start flying in.  And what a header!  Darwin will be great.

Yep. Think there’s an argument to say that he kind of already is, albeit with potential for significant improvement. Those numbers are pretty fucking great, to be fair to him.

He said Darwin said there was a little stiffness in his muscles but he was fine to carry on. Then Klopp said every time he saw him sprint his heart was in his mouth in case something pinged, so he brought him off as a precaution. Nothing he said led me to think he wouldn't be involved against Forest.

I knew he'd mentioned something but didn't see it live.  Yeah, I would have had the same take as you to that.

Since your Forest pod and yours Paul, and Jules comments about the medical set up at the club, I've been listening for comments from Klopp to see if there is anything worth reading into, and there's fucking loads!  From his comments that he's annoyed he didn't realise Kieta (and he said someone else?) would be fit in time to be included in the group phase, to constant comments about not knowing if player will be fit ("he might be, I don't know?").  He's got a snark on and it very much sounds like he has it with the fitness and medical lads.

That's fair, I'm the quintessential kid at school who's been dragged along with the bigger boys' making fun of someone's afflictions. I'm better than that. And so is my hair.

I feel the same about Nunez’s name not being on the team-sheet. I think it’s because for most of the season it’s seemed that (apart from the kids) only Nunez and Diaz have been playing flat out while everybody else has been wading through treacle.

Totally agree. Can’t tell if I’m reading too much into things when he speaks, but there’s definitely something he’s at least irked by in the medical side.

And that's it.  I was wondering am I hearing things I want/expect to hear. But I'm not.  He's pissed off with how it is at the moment.

Ox was the other one. Neither can play in the "dead rubber" (if he wants to treat it as such). He is definitely referencing the medical issues more than usual.

I think we should go balls out and try win 3-0 to top the group, especially given the potential opponents if we finish 2nd. It's Anfield in a champions league and Napoli might rest a few. If Napoli get one, then start making substitutions but if there ix a chance top the group thdm go for it. There is a break of 5 days afterwards, to prep for the Spurs game and then it's Derby, Southampton and off for the World cup.

Just on Harvey, it is remarkable that his two Euro goals were both instinctive right foot shots.  He took them on and hit each well.  If I was going to be less generous, though, I would say he had to hit them when he did.

That said, the fact remains that he has shown he can use both feet.

However, during a match, all too often he has to be all left foot.  The pass you referenced when he knocked it too far was, I think, because he hit it with the outside of his left rather than a more straightforward right-footed through ball.

He also cuts inside too many times, because he has to get it on his left side.

We're not in John Arne Riise territory (when he'd rather attempt a stooping header than swing his right boot at it) but I do think he needs to vary it up a bit more.

He's playing well and deserves his place.  I think to keep it, he needs to use both feet to benefit his game and the team.

You'd assume so, but maybe he's done that in the past and it backfired so now he just goes with what they tell him.

I heard he’s still pissed off with them about some dodgy advice they gave him about his hair transplant.

To be fair, the new guy is the only one you could put your pint on his head and it would still be there when you got back from the toilets.
