  1. I'm lucky enough to have seen Liddell,Dalglish and Gerrard.I wasnt really old enough to properly appreciate Liddell but he would have walked into any club or international side in his day. Football is a team game and Kenny still has a slight edge for me because of his ability to bring others into a game.Steven provides more moments of sheer inspiration-emphasised with the relative lack of support around him for much of his career.Steven probably has more all round abilty in being able to play wide/central and even full back. There is now a real contest between the two-which wasnt really the case a couple of years back.By the time Steven's career comes to an end I think most will believe he has surpassed King Kenny.
  2. I think there are two issues and SOS has fallen between the two.The first issue to to rid the club of its current owners-black and white with no shades of grey. Most people supported SOS initially because that was its perceived aim.SOS needs to tie up with shareliverpool to attempt to secure some level of fan ownership/representation when and if new owners emerge. The second issue surrounds improving matters for supporters on a wide range of subjects-ticketing/travel/facilities etc.As someone else has said the things that are usually associated with a supporters club. SOS needs to consider why it is there and recognise it cant deal with both these issues effectively. If it has given up on ownership being the fundamental issue and the prime reason for its inception it needs to say so clearly both internally and externally. As an aside whatever it is or isnt SOS needs to improve its basic communication processes.I know from earlier experience that proposals -even when backed by some finance-aren't even acknowledged or feedback given.Rightly or wrongly this gives an impression of a cosy club just for those in the know.
  3. St John,Yeats,Hughes,Whelan,Barnes,McMahon head a long list of failed managers so who can tell-obviously they all failed elsewhere. You would have put money on Sounness being successful at Anfield at the time of his appointment so who can tell. Its strange that recent managers of the big four in the premiership have been relatively unsuccessful as players.
  4. Hindsight is wonderful.I would have done a lot of things differently to Bill Shankly: -I wouldnt have bought Tony Hately,Phil Chisnall,Alun Evans, -I would have played a more positive game away from home in seasons 67 and 68 when we only won 7 and 5 games respectively -I would have got the tactics right against Inter Milan in 65 -I would have broken up the 64-66 team earlier -I wouldnt have constant rows with the directors over transfer funding/targets and threaten to resign 4or 5 times over a variety of issues Rafa isnt perfect but nor are most.Just imagine the stick Shanks would of received in the period 67-71 in todays media driven age.
  5. It did strike me that if Shanks had operated in this age of constant media scrutiny and the internet what would have happened.Certainly there would have been polls calling for his head after 18 months when yet again we finished third in the old division 2.If not then well consider 1972 when we hadnt won a trophy for six seasons. Also there were constant battles with the board who refused to back him in the transfer market to sign players such as Jack Charlton and Dennis Law.He formed an alliance with one faction of the board to be able to get money to sign players such as St John and Yeats. All these boardroom squabbles would be in the public domain today. He was also highly driven and obssesive.Sometimes he said outrageous things at press conferences-complained once about how defensive Ajax had been after beating us 5-1. I support and believe in Benitez but wish he hadnt brought his contract issue into the press at that particular time.I think at times we are over cautious and should risk defeat to win-4 wins and 2 losses is better than 6 draws.I think the Keane transfer hasnt worked and its understandable that we need to minimise the financial loss which would have been considerable if we waited till the summer. The end of the season will show whether we -and Rafa-are still making progress.Things are never as black and white as some supporters make it.Some of the knee jerk reaction after every game -both for and against-is frankly laughable.
  6. SSN reporting on breaking news that the move is off.
  7. Dont think there's anything wrong with the money we paid for Babel-he's obviously very talented but still seems to lack something in mental strength/self belief.Dossena is hard to explain since we havent really seen anything to understand that he might have ability. Plessis's effort and form in the reserves-or more accurately lack of-is surprising and someone need to sort him out quickly if he is to have a future.
  8. I see the age range on here has missed such favourites as Louis Bimpson,Alan Arnell and Fred Morris.Having seen such talent when I first started watching I dont complain much these days!
  9. On their stated long term and ultimate aim I'm not sure how they are meant to working with the shareliverpool people.I have asked but got a reply as if drafted by a spin doctor.I notice they shared the same meeting forum recently. I see no evidence of a coherent stategy that moves from the shorter term tactical actions against Hicks and Gillett towards the longer term of seeking link/partnerships with potential future owners(possibly in the form of minority shareholding).
  10. Totally agree personally. How do you think most would react-split down the middle?
  11. I wonder what the reaction would be if the americans were bought out by Dubai or whoever about year end and the new owners opened the january window by signing Ronaldo and Kaka.Despair or joy?
  12. My god I feel ancient-I assumed any reference to Inter Milan was back in May 1965.That is still the best for me.
  13. There is no arguement about Kenny as a person .But as maybe one of the few on here who saw the careers of both I have to confess that Best was-in my opinion- the greatest British player Ive seen
  14. I wonder if there is any way of DIC allowing a minority shareholding to supporters ;with of course board representation.Minority shareholding would be linked to legal rights in a number of areas-those requiring 100% shareholder approval- which may provide a formalised way of protecting things in the long term. This would be separate to the day to day responsibility for running the club where the majority shareholder would have the necessary freedom to act. As an aside I would have thought someone like Kenny Dalglish might be an option as a choice to be the supporters nominee on the board. He understands the club, its tradition and how a club is run.He seems unlikely to be returning to football in any capacity which would provide a conflict of interest.
  15. Dont know if this was put up merely to reinforce the support behind Rafa. But in the current turmoil there can be no question of getting rid of the only competence and stability in the club.Dont really see it as a sensible subject for debate. Despite that view I dont know whether Rafa will fully succeed in the premiership. There are issues of wholesale team changes early season-not sensible limited rotation-and an over cautious approach to games we have to look to win such as Blackburn away. The most important signing this summer will be Rafa's assistant someone with strong people skills and who can also make Rafa listen when he needs to question himself. Next season's end will see Rafa having served 5 years which is a more sensible time to make judgements.
  16. The interview just illustrates why Moores and Parry cannot be allowed to play any long term role at the club they have mismanaged. In the short term they are needed to reduce the amount of damage they have done until the future club ownership issue is resolved.
  17. Think this topic was posted recently somewhere else.Anyway 1955 versus Lincoln City in the old league division 2.It was early season and we won 2-1 with a guy called Alan Arnell scoring both goals. My uncle(who was an Evertonian) took me and I stood somewhere near the halfway line but cant remember which side of the ground-have an idea it was pre the old kemlyn road stand.
  18. Thought he failed at Bolton by trying to do away with the Allardyce long ball style.Did you ever see the reserve team style of play when he coached them? Not saying there arent alternatives tho.
  19. Think its worth remembering he virtually had two careers.Firstly as a right winger in Shanks first great side where he won the 2nd division title;two league titles and an FA Cup.He also played a game in the 66 world cup in that position. He would walk into today's team in that position-or right midfield as it is now. His second careeer as a central midfielder in Shank's second side and Bob Paisley's he won three more league titles;FA Cup;two UEFA Cups and European Cup.I agree we have had more talented central midfield players. He also got capped again in this position. In picking the best Liverpool eleven from Shankly onwards I think he would be hard to leave out from the right midfield spot.
  20. Sums up my feelings perfectly. For someone of my generation the love of football unified the city rather than provoking a red and blue divide.
  21. He was one of my early heroes and the hardest player i can remember. One of those players who didnt make the headlines as the obvious star of a team but nevertheless was the "heartbeat" of the side. The decline of Shank's first side was often linked to Gerry Byrne's knee injury at the start of the 66/67 season.
  22. Bellamy gives an option-namely pace-but his scoring rate versus chances is quite poor.If we sign a pacey goalscorer he will obviously be surplus. He is not a bad player but it must be likely that better options will be transfer targets this summer. He's been a decent signing but potential as a liverpool great is a bit unlikely.
  23. Was lucky enough to be at both the Inter Milan and St Etienne games and for me the Inter game was the greatest atmosphere of all time although the Etienne result meant more. The reference to DF at Maine Road brought back memories-it was an easter fixture and he destroyed an international defender called Mike Doyle. It was an unforgettable individual display-I had tickets for the players lounge that day and rember talking to Steve Heighway after the game.
  24. If the original poster had been around at the time he would have said Ray Kennedy,Terry McDermott,David Johnson,Craig Johnston amongst others were a waste of money. All took some time to settle at Anfield. I agree Bellamy and Pennant have been dissappointing so far but only time will tell.On the other hand Kuyt looks a good buy.
