It's right to sell Xabi, but I am concerned that we'll not be able to find a like-for-like replacement. I'm not massively concerned about losing somebody of his passing ability, but I am concerned about losing the player who more often than not controlled the pace of our play. Neither Gerrard nor Mascherano have that side to their game (not even mentioning Lucas!), and there are very few players out there who are able to do it effectively - in fact, the only player as good as Xabi is Xavi IMO, and I don't think Rafa's budget will quite stretch :) Interesting times ahead. Thanks for the memories Xabi-lad!

Apologies if I'm barking up the wrong tree, but reading between the lines what you appear to be asking is "should I inform them of their mistake, or should I keep schtum and have a weekend away for free?". Also, on top of this, "should I consider asking for a complimentary upgrade?".

I'm 99.9% certain that Xabi is as good as gone. I know for fact that he's been nigh on begging members of Benitez's back room staff to 'have a word' with Rafa. IMO Rafa has played this 100% correctly so far, and is doing all he can to get the best price. Financial constraints aside, I very much doubt Benitez wants to sell Xabi, but he knows that Xabi is a valuable asset, and one which in selling (to release funds Rafa doesn't have) will destabilise the team the least. That we have to sell to buy is hugely regrettable. We have Moores et al to thank for that...

*IF* Xabi has asked to leave, Rafa should give Xabi and Real 10 days to complete the deal. If not, Xabi has to get his head down and have at least another season here. If Xabi leaves we'll most probably not find a direct replacement and will have to alter our first team set up; obviously no mean feat. Finding the new players to complete our jigsaw isn't going to be easy or cheap, so Real need to put up or shut up.

No, I believe we should be sending more men there. More so than any other area I believe there's a direct correlation in the amount of possible terrorist attacks hailing from the Afghan/Pakistan border - 'British' men travelling there to partake in camps only to come back here and try to blow the fcuk out of innocent civilians - and the military offensives we have out there. Add to that the amount of heroin grown in Afghanistan coming into the UK etc, I think - as bad as it is losing men out there - that it's imperative that we keep our soldiers there. They should definitely be receiving better equipment though.

Currently I wouldn't offer either an improved deal. If we did I think it would encourage others' agents to throw their toys out of the pram in the hope of their player's being offered improved contracts etc. If they have another good season I'd offer improved terms before the transfer window opens next summer. If it's true that Mascherano is 'only' on £25k p/w then I'd probably be wanting to improve this sooner, but not right now.

We already have a mountain to climb to overcome The Scum, that a previous son of LFC would choose to aim to try to make that harder leaves a sour taste. He won't receive my backing after this.
