Liverpool's Kirkland out for rest of season

Reuters

LONDON, April 15 (Reuters) - Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to his broken wrist and will almost certainly miss Euro 2004, Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier said on Thursday.

Kirkland broke his left wrist in training on March 13 and had originally hoped to recover in six weeks.

However, Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier said on his club's official website: "Chris won't play again this season. He won't be ready in time.

"I don't think he will be fit for the European Championship. He is very unlucky because I am sure he would have gone with the England squad."

The 22-year-old, whose career has been blighted by injury, was a strong contender for a place in England's squad for Euro 2004 which starts in Portugal on June 12.

Kirkland was called up by coach Sven-Goran Eriksson for the February friendly against Portugal.

In his absence Pole Jerzy Dudek has been keeping goal for Liverpool who are trying to secure fourth place and qualification for the Champions League next season with five games of the season to go.
