That was the week that was (Aug 18-25 2020)

    theweekthatwas.jpg

Tuesday Aug 18:

Lovren reveals that on the night we clinched the title he sneaked out of Formby Hall and drove to Anfield to join in the celebrations with the fans. This was pretty jaw dropping I thought. But if there was one player in the squad who was going to do something like that, he’d have been high on the list for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, he’s batshit mental. Don’t forget, this is a guy who believes that COVID19 was created by Bill Gates in order to get us all microchipped when a vaccine comes out.

Secondly, he was leaving so I guess he just figured he had nothing to lose. He wanted to experience being with the fans in a moment like that and he knew that it wouldn’t have any long term disciplinary implications if he broke club rules and left the hotel.

Look, I get that it was irresponsible and he shouldn’t have done it. It’s not big and it’s not clever. I don’t condone his actions. I can’t help but laugh at them though. It’s the idea of him having a conversation with Adrian about it first that tickled me. “Fuck this, you are all boring bastards going to bed at midnight. I’m going to Anfield to celebrate with the fans”. “Are you fuck”. “I am. Watch me.” “Nah I don’t believe you”. “I’m going, I’ll send you videos”. And off he went!

On the field tonight, PSG beat Leipzig to reach the final. I think I speak for us all when I say “come on Bayern, you can’t let the French Man City soil this competition by getting their cheating oil stained hands on the trophy”.

Speaking of City, that little rat Bernardo is still tweeting about LFC fans messaging him. What does he expect after what he said the other day? It was an open invitation. He showed he was irritated by it so he opened the front door and invited us all to come in with muddy feet and walk all over his new carpets. Of course you’ll also get some who’ll break some cups, shit in the sink and take all manner of other liberties, but just remember, YOU OPENED THE FRONT DOOR SOFT LAD!

Wednesday Aug 19:

Ok, you know how I’ve been ranting about the way bellends have been massively over-rating Scholes since he retired? Well this might just be the ultimate example of it.

scholes.jpeg

Whoever picked this has actually picked Paul Scholes ahead of Zinedine Zidane and Stevie Gerrard. This is like having a discussion about best TV shows and including ‘Benidorm’ over ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘the Wire’ (Messi would obviously be the Sopranos in this reference).

You all know my feelings on Zidane. He’s not as great as everyone says but I would never say he wasn’t a great player. He was brilliant, lavishly gifted and a winner. I just don’t see him as this ‘top five of all time’ that a lot of people claim him to be, that’s all.

That being said, he’s an absolute fucking shoe-in for any “best ever Champions League XI”. Leaving him out for Gerrard, Keane, Seedorf, Alonso, Pirlo or any other world class midfielders would at least be a lively debate (I’m taking Gerrard all day but I am obviously biased). Leaving him out for Scholes though is just… I don’t even know. I actually think it deserves a prison sentence. I’m not joking. Whoever picked this team, lock the cunt up and throw him in the nonce wing.

I reckon Xavi picked it. That’s the only logical explanation as no-one ever spoke about Scholes until that silly cunt made his outlandish statement. So yeah, lock Xavi up with the nonces.

Meanwhile, Bayern swept Lyon aside to reach the final. I never bothered watching this one and it’s 50/50 whether I’ll watch the final. I’m not bothered about watching, I just hope PSG don’t win.

Haha ‘Big Red Ron’ is the new Barca manager. So after being deemed not good enough for Everton, he’s managed Belgium, Holland and Barcelona. There’s hope for Marco Silva yet.

Thursday Aug 20:

The fixtures are out and we start with Leeds at home. This is fucking shit. We should be there at that game. That’s a great way to start a season and no doubt the sun will be shining. Opening day at Anfield is fucking great, it’s one of the best experiences you can have in life. I love it. And instead we’ll be watching on telly as the lads play in an empty stadium again.

I think this is actually worse than not being able to go last season. As shit as that was, it was tempered by the relief that the games were actually being played and the season wasn’t going to be scrapped. So I was ok with missing out on the end of last season, but missing the start of this one is going to hurt.

Meanwhile, Gini is linked with Barca and the suggestion is that Koeman has told him not to sign a new contract. This is starting to make sense now. Koeman has probably known for months he was getting the Barca job and he might have asked Gini to join him there. Personally I don’t see the attraction to Barca at the moment if I’m Gini, but it’s possible he might just fancy having them on his CV and he might think he’s achieved everything he wants to here.

Of course he might just be days away from signing a new deal too. That wouldn’t surprise me at all as he seems perfectly happy here and Klopp loves him. We’ve seen new contracts announced out of the blue before. Mané and Milner spring to mind, so Gini might yet extend his stay. If there is something in this though it would explain the links to Thiago, because as I’ve been saying for weeks, they make little sense otherwise.

More Dejan Lovren quotes today. "I deliberately hit Ramos after hurting Salah? Yes, this is possible. Luka Modric tried to reduce the tension between me and Ramos, and we were facing Spain together with the Croatian national team, and I deliberately hit him with my elbows and told him that we have drawn now.”

He was asked what Mo thought about it, and replied “I will not tell you [what he said], but he laughed.”

In case you’d forgotten, this is what he said on Instagram after that Croatia / Spain game: “I elbowed him good. Haha! 3-2! Go ahead and talk now buddy. Buddy! They are a bunch of pussies.”

I didn’t know this until now (or I’d forgotten, which happens a lot these days) but he got a one game ban from UEFA after that. What a guy.

Friday Aug 21:

Ox is injured again and might miss three months. Fucks sake. I just feel bad for the lad but at least it’s not as bad as the last one, so that’s some small comfort. It was trending on Twitter and there were more tweets about “now let’s get Thiago done” than there were ones expressing sympathy for Ox.

Then again, Milner was trending when we signed Kostas. Why? Because the LFC Fam were joyous about never having to see Milner play full back again. Don’t be watching those Barca highlights ever again then, you ungrateful cunts.

The club posted a photo from training today of what was ‘the winning team’. It was young v old and young won it. I looked at the photo and couldn’t really envisage how that team could beat the senior side, but it turns out it wasn’t a match it was a series of training routines.

They put the video up on the site and it was great. Lots of shooting and one v one drills. The ball was flying in here there and everywhere. And you know how the ‘young’ team won? Because Alisson was on it with them. He was unreal. He made loads of great saves and especially in the one v ones he looked great.

Other observations. Sadio’s finishing is dynamite. The way he can just bend it into the corner with either foot is something that maybe taken a little for granted. He’s great though.

Meanwhile, Harry Maguire is arrested. My first thought was it must be for fraud. He’s been pretending to be a top class defender for years so it was always going to catch up with him eventually. Maybe it was for criminal defending over a period of two years? Turns out it was for something far more predictable.

Him and his mates were fighting outside a bar in Greece. That’s the thing about Maguire. You can tell just by looking at him that if he wasn’t playing he’d be following England around, lashing plastic chairs at local waiters and singing about World War Two. Some reports suggest he hit a copper and then tried to bribe him. I’d bet everything I own on him using the words “do you know who I am?” at some point during what followed.

In other news today, Sevilla won the Europa League again. Six times in ten years or something. Mental. I actually think they’ve reached a point now where they can’t wait to get knocked out of the Champions League just so they can get back in the Europa. They fucking love it don’t they?

It was a bit bad tempered, which is no surprise given how snide Sevilla can be, and it was funny as fuck seeing Banega taking the piss out of Conte over his ‘wig’ only for Conte to offer him out. These latin fellas and their fiery tempers.

Saturday Aug 22:

Our pre-season gets off to a winning start with a 3-0 win over Stuttgart. Bobby, Naby and Brewster got the goals and the game was played in a biblical style flood. The subs for the second half came out on Noah’s Ark it was that bad.

The weather meant it wasn’t the greatest spectacle but as always in pre-season games it was good seeing some of the kids getting a chance. Jones looks like he’s bulked up a bit as tends to happen when lads get to around 20 years of age. Mind you, if Koumetio gets any bigger he’ll need his own changing room. Mad that he’s only 17. Apparently one of the Academy coaches has said to journey that “no-one’s going to want to play against him when he’s 20/21”.

Harry Wilson is being linked with virtually every club outside the top six. Villa and Leeds being the latest to have thrown their hats in the ring. Word out of the club is he won’t be loaned again, so it’s either keep him or sell him. I suspect it hinges on who we receive a bigger offer for; Wilson or Shaqiri. One will go and one will stay I reckon.

Over in Greece, Maguire spent two nights in the clink but he’s out now and is a free man - for now at least. Lots of reasons being given now justifying whatever it was he did or didn’t do. His sister was ‘stabbed with something sharp’, a group of ‘rival fans’ were singing about Munich and chanting “fuck United” and then this one one that really made me laugh; “they were calling him a fridge”. All of that smacks of United media spin to me.

Fuck knows what actually happened but I don’t believe any of the shit that was put out there today. Reeks of United’s press office planting rumours to make him look like the victim. It could be true though, as let’s be honest, there are few more repulsive things in this world than groups of English lads abroad. The real mystery here is how come there’s no phone videos of it, as literally nothing happens these days without some cunt filming it on their phone. All too busy fighting presumably.

Sunday Aug 23:

Bayern have taken our crown as Champions of Europe and joined us as six times winners. I’m good with that, no-one is more worthy than this Bayern team as they’re great to watch and Thomas Muller is the fucking man. He’d fit right in here, imagine him and Milner bouncing off each other! As for them joining us on six, that doesn’t bother me at all. If they’d gone one ahead I might feel differently, but we’re both European heavyweights and this is to be expected.

Funny the way some gobshites think that’s worthy of ‘banter points’. Fans of teams who have never achieved fuck all are trying to take the piss out of us because one of the richest, most historic clubs in world football have just matched our achievements. Micah Richards was trying to wind Carra up with that and Carra just said “just to let you know,  that’s six more than Man City”. I mean what was he expecting? That’s an open goal for Carra that.

Ok this is interesting. Billy Bean heads a consortium that is looking to buy into football and there are suggestions that FSG might sell him a minority stake in the Reds. He’s got around £400m or so to invest and he’s big mates with John Henry. For those who don’t know, he’s also the guy who invented “moneyball” so you can why Henry likes him so much.

What this would mean if he came onboard is that, in theory, his money could be used for the new training ground and any work on redeveloping Anfield, because that type of expenditure doesn’t count towards FFP. That would therefore free up cash to spend on players. If it were to happen, which it probably won’t. If I’m Billy Bean I’d want my own club, I wouldn’t want to be basically a silent partner in someone else’s.

Speculation linking us with David Brooks today. Absolutely no way are we signing a player like that when we have Jones and Minamino, not to mention Shaqiri (if he stays) and Elliott.

Monday Aug 24:

Looks like Suarez could be going back to Ajax. Hardly surprising. He always said he wanted to go back there before he retired and he doesn’t seem the type to go to Qatar or China. I was having a little look around twitter to see what people were saying, and it appears that Barca have the same type of social media cunt fans as we do.

The complete lack of respect and gratitude to a player who has been an unquestioned massive success for them is pretty sickening. They want him fucked off asap and they’re pissed off that Suarez isn’t prepared to just walk away from a lucrative contract that still has time to run.

So you’ve got all these fucking FIFA playing virgins kicking off and slating him. Interesting that none seemed to be Catalans as they were all tweeting in English. From what I saw, they were mostly glory hunting Americans and Africans, which funnily enough is usually the case with the cunts who want Henderson, Milner and / or Gini replaced by Thiago.

Has it always been like this or are we only aware of it more now because of social media?

As you know, I’d be all over Suarez on a free for a year or two. I’m in the minority there amongst the lads in various groupchats though. Not sure why, as it seems like a complete no brainer to me. Of course I’d prefer Mbappe, Sancho, Adama etc but that’s not happening. I’d rather Suarez be rotating in when any of the front lads are rested than having another year of Ox, Origi, Minamino etc being square pegs in a round hole.

It’s moot though because as I’ve said before, he couldn’t cope with not playing every game and fuck knows what he’d end up doing. He’ll go to Ajax and be the star rather than come here and be just another guy.

Tuesday Aug 25:

We drew 2-2 with Salzburg after going behind early. The first half was proper shite for about 35 minutes. We picked up a bit after that but overall it was far too casual and sloppy. Klopp put it down to tired legs. If that’s the case then give Mo a few days off because he was FUCKING BRUTAL. Wasn’t as bad as Robbo though.

The second half was better at least. Brewster bagged a couple of goals and a lot of fans are now getting a little carried away about it. He’s a brilliant finisher and he scores goals, but is that going to be enough to sway Klopp? He doesn’t do much in the build up and I have no idea how good he is at pressing or if he even understands the intricacies of it.

He might do, I have no idea, I’m just saying that being a finisher isn’t enough to play centre forward in this team (and in fairness Rhian himself said this in a great post-match interview). There was a time not so long ago when it would have been but that was when we weren’t winning league titles and European Cups. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking the kid, I’m just pointing out that the style of player he is might not be conducive with what Klopp needs.

Origi has the same problem. He scores goals and he can finish, but rightly or wrongly, any number nine for us is going to be judged against what Firmino does, and neither Origi nor Brewster are that type of player. The funny thing is, given the same amount of minutes Brewster would almost certainly score more than Bobby, but Sadio and Mo wouldn’t get as many as they do now.

Also today, Messi tells Barca he wants to activate the clause in his contract that allows him to walk away on a free transfer. Barca say the clause needed to be activated by June 10, but I’m not sure that will stand up given that the season was extended due to Covid. If they even attempt to fight that it’s a terrible look for them after all Messi has done for that club. If he wants to go, they should let him go as he’s more than earned that right.

The question now is where will he end up. I said last week he’ll take the easy (and best paid) route and join his old mate Neymar at PSG, but there’s a chance he might re-unite with the bald fraud and go to City. What he should be doing is calling Klopp and begging for a chance to play here, but if he’s happy to join City and once again get his arse spanked by the Reds then more fool him. We’ll see I guess.

Meanwhile, Maguire is found guilty of bribery, but under the terms of Greek law he can…. *checks notes*…. pay them money to avoid a jail sentence. Hmm. He was also accused of hitting a copper. Does that mean he has to beat the snot out of a few more of them or face being thrown in the slammer?

and that was the week that was….

Great report. I think the twats on twitter are called the twateratti arent they? They just talk shite and to be honest, I think a lot of them are the most plassy of all fanbases.

Degsy, you've got to love him with that Anfield visit. Yeah I know he had brain farts during games, the most notable against Spurs and Kane at Wembley. But even when subbed off after 30 minutes, he didnt hide away in the dressing room. He took it like a pro and sat on the subs bench in full view of everyone.

That Xavi doesnt rate us, does he? When he talked of managing 'big clubs' he didnt mention us instead putting Spurs and arsenal in with the likes of city and united. Fucking dweeb.

Didnt want Bayern to draw level with us before the finalists were known. No way I wanted PSG to win. We can still say only Real and Milan have been European Champions more than us so I'll stomach that just so long as they dont retain it next season!

I remember him bitching when Liverpool knocked Barcelona out of the CL in 2007. Talking about the better team was knocked out after beating us at Anfield even though they were beaten at the Nou Camp and only won the return leg because of Valdes.

People's hatred for Real Madrid really allowed Barcelona's entitlement to fall under the radar during the Ronaldinho and early Messi era but they were just as bad.

Dave your mention of the Barce fanbase's reaction to Suarez reminds me of the way they hounded him when he was going through a goal drought... Dude scored the winner in a CL final and had an amazing 40 goal season the next one but the moment he started struggling they turned on him.

Fuck that entire club I will take great pleasure in watching them struggle

Great diary again, Dave !

How is the fanzine progressing ?

Bayern deserved winning, best team of the year.

Brewster would learn more playing on loan in PL than playing a few minutes for us every other week.

I see your shrink is helping you a lot to come to terms with that weird Zidane complex !

Koeman managed Belgium?

Think you're mixing up the managers who're still on the Everton payroll...

Am expecting Joe Royle to get the Germany gig when the nose-picker leaves, and Walter Smith to follow Tite with Brazil.

I didn't remember it happening but I read it somewhere so just went with it without checking because that's how I roll.

Suarez is the third highest scorer in Barcas history behind Messi and some fella from the 40's yet their fans seem to class him as some kind of South American Benteke ...fucking weirdos

Would definitely be great to have Suarez back for 2-3 years if he was happy to be a squad player / senior member - he's still got the skill and ability to destroy most teams in the PL.
