Kuyt hopeful old mates can win the title

Dirk Kuyt says the recent wins over Arsenal and Everton have shown that Liverpool can win the league this season and he's backing the deadly duo of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge to fire his old side into next year's Champions League.

"Liverpool are on fire and have produced some stunning football at times this year," the former Liverpool striker told FourFourTwo in an exclusive interview you can find on their website. "The 5-1 win against Arsenal was unbelievable. I watched the 4-0 victory over Everton and was blown away by it, but the league performance against the Gunners eclipsed that.

Like many fans, Kuyt is now beginning to believe that a top four finish is the minimum his old club might go on to achieve in the coming weeks. "If I'm honest, two weeks ago I'd have said it was a big ask for Liverpool to win the title this season" said the Dutchman.  "Back in August their target started off as a Champions League place and that is still the number one priority.

"They still have to overhaul three teams to win it, but who knows what will happen. They are right in the mix now. It's a close league and they have shown they are a real force, particularly at Anfield. With Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge in attack they will score goals for fun and that is crucial in any title-winning side.

Kuyt experienced many great European nights during his time at Anfield and even scored in a Champions League Final in 2007, and he's understandably eager to see his old club return to the big dance. "Their chances of finishing in the top four are very good and being back in the Champions League would be a huge experience for the younger players and their development. It would also give Brendan Rodgers the chance to pit his wits against Europe's best managers too.

"If they can do that by winning the title that would be unbelievable. Everyone in Liverpool is desperate for that and I am no different. I'm an adopted Scouser now playing in Turkey but I still keep a close eye on how my old mates are getting on. I'd love them to win the league and they are moving in the right direction."

Apart from being a hairy ginger dude, Kuyt is like the dependable ugly chick that always brings you Kentucky and that beer you like and always gives you her best in the sack. She's not a stunner and she knows it. Thus she tries much harder to please than the beauty queen. That is her beauty.

Remember reading a great interview with him back in the day, about how his Dad was a deep-sea fisherman in hard conditions, and how it shaped who he is.  You could really see that in him, and in this era it makes him very rare as a footballer I can relate to and admire as a bloke.  He also said his missus was still working as a nurse when he'd made it and after they had their first child, pulling night shifts because she wanted to help others.

Good people.

Everyone likes him because of his effort and its good to look back and say he's boss but on a week to week basis in the 09/10 season he certainly wasn't

Unlike everyone else that season.  We deffo would've won the title - and the owners and the fans would've all been united behind the manager - if it weren't for deadweight Dirk, the bastard.

(That's sarcasm, by the way.)

Consumate Pro who gave everything for the team, an all round top bloke, and when he hangs up his boots he can genuinely say he left everything on the pitch every week.

Loved his debut, where his enthusiasm coming off the bench was great to see. Feyenoord fans all over Anfield that day.

I was at that game, may have had a drink, who was it against, West Ham? Remember him coming on like a man possessed and bombing around all over the pitch. Whatever Rafa's instructions were I don't think he heard them, unless he said chase everything!

I was gutted that Dirk's goal in the 2012 League Cup Final turned out not to be the winner.

I remember Dirk scoring and the celebrations and the camera then panned straight to Kenny who was looking to the supporters with tears in his eyes.  Some people may not think that cup triumph was important but it meant a hell of a lot to me, demonstrated by two special people who love this club

Kenny Dalglish came back as manager of the club, and lifted another trophy.

Schoolboy's own stuff, as Barry Davies once said.

Yep. How it felt for me anyway.  I was a kid again for 18 months. Glad he's back again

That FA Cup will remain one of my biggest ever if onlys, even though they would still have sacked Kenny.

Would have reflected much more fairly on the job he did and the incredible figure he is for being able to step back in and do it, especially the more time passes.

Absolutely loved Dirk. That Manc winner was my favourite Derek moment.

Scored some massive goals and made the most of his ability, every second he was on the pitch. If only more had his application and work rate when playing for us.

There were certain games he shouldn't have started in and I'm sure he often frustrated us all in them. However, it's not his fault he was often being asked to be a square peg, in a round hole.

Viva Derek.
