Henry calls on UEFA to act against clubs ignoring FFP rules

John W. Henry has called on UEFA to do something about the clubs he claims are ‘ignoring Financial Fair Play’ regulations.

Speaking to the BBC, the Reds’ Principal Owner said; “The biggest challenge for us has been the ignoring of Financial Fair Play. It makes it very difficult to compete, but by the same token there are many clubs who can't compete at Liverpool's level. So I guess I shouldn't complain that vociferously.

”It's challenging, it makes it difficult” he continued. “There are only four Champions League spots, we have at least two teams that seem to have unlimited budgets, so it's challenging."

Liverpool’s match day revenue is dwarfed by the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal, and although the expansion of Anfield will help to close that gap when it eventually happens, Henry insists that is not the biggest financial barrier for Liverpool to overcome, it’s the loopholes that other teams are finding in UEFA's FFP regulations.

"The stadium was never going to solve the problems that Liverpool was facing economically," Henry explained. "Financial Fair Play is a much bigger solution to the problems Liverpool and other clubs are trying to compete against. That's a much larger issue.

"We really don't have Financial Fair Play, or at least people are not abiding by it. If UEFA does something about it and people have to comply, even then the rules are somewhat suspect. I'd love to think that UEFA can do and will do what needs to be done, but we'll see."

Isn't Borini considered a homegrown player?

I'm not sure as he was 16 when he joined Chelsea but I think he was only there two years. You need  to be at a club for 3 years between the ages of 16 and 21.

Be interesting to know where the 50m will go.  Hopefully to grassroots or junior football but i kind of doubt it.

Uefa guidelines stipulate that teams who qualify for Champions League or Europa League, and therefore come under microscope of FFP, must limit losses to an agreed amount

Liverpool could be at risk of having nearly £7 million in Champions League prize money withheld as Uefa investigates whether or not the club has breached Financial Pair Play regulations.

Due to Liverpool's absence from either of last season's European cup competitions - the Champions League and Europa League - they were not required to submit acounts for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. However, having now qualified for Europe's premier club competition, they are now subject to FFP.

Uefa guidelines stipulate that the teams who qualify, and therefore come under the microscope of FFP, must limit their losses to an agreed amount. For the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal, who were present in last season's Champions League, that figure was £35.4m over two seasons.

Man City and French giants PSG were the two most high-profile teams who exceeded this amount and were penalised heavily.

Andrea Traverso, head of Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play at Uefa, told The Times: "As soon as a club qualifies [for a Uefa competition], it enters the scope of Financial Fair Play. So they have to immediately submit all the information to Uefa."

Over the summer, Liverpool, and the other sides not involved in Uefa competition, submitted their accounts for the past two seasons and they showed significant enough losses to potentially be among clubs referred to the Club Financial Control Body (CFCB).

Uefa has not confirmed which clubs will be deemed "at risk". Last season it was 76 but, ultimately, only nine were sanctioned. And this season "at risk" clubs could have the first instalment of their Champions League prize money held back while they are investigated.

Apparently 30k Everton fans had been tweeting Uefa with their official calculations down to the penny. Demanding a top top proper and full investigation.

Its to be distributed among the clubs who complied with FFP last year including the Manc's Real Madrid and Chelsea.

If the FFP was being true to its stated objective which is to prevent the likes of H&G types from bankrupting clubs then the money should go into a reserve bailout fund to help clubs like Rangers etc transition to new ownership. Instead as is true of many things its really all about protecting the status quo.

It was a vehicle designed to achieve more power and influence for Crapini the crooked bastard. Not into having his gifts scrutinized though. 15k watches are ok it would seem.

A bit of a nothing article, that. All it really says (repeatedly) is that teams competing in UEFA competitions are subject to FFP rules. Well, pas de poo, Poirot! There's nothing to substantiate the snide innuendo that LFC would be particularly at risk.

haha tragic, after no marks city and chelsea shamelessly buying football despite having zero herritage or fans , just with billions of oil blood money to artificially over inflate the market and almost kill competition, Liverpool having a net spend of £36 million one year is going to get them in trouble.?

the telegraph 'could' go fuck a sparrow.
