PODCAST: Liverpool 1 Aston Villa 1 - Match Reaction

Not what we were hoping for from the final home game. Bobby got a goal on his Anfield farewell but hopes of a top four finish are dead in the water after Villa pooped the party with some horrendous shithousing, ably assisted by a referee with a score to settle.

TLW Editor Dave Usher is joined by Julian Richards and Paul Natton to reflect on a massively frustrating afternoon as well as paying tribute to the legends Firmino and Milner.

Clearly, football generally, but the Premier League in particular is going through a difficult period in its brand image of being a fair and competitive league.

There are quiet corners of the media that reflect a growing disaffection with the product, with only a small number willing to call out the cheating and pushing of the limits of acceptable behaviour.

I am referring of course to the despicable practice of overt timewasting, feigning injury and generally behaving in a way that is against the spirit of the sport.

So why have the presenters of this podcast glossed over the behaviour of the Aston Villa players in their review of the game?

The surprising answer may well be Castore.  I am led to understand that they share the same sports sponsorship.

Aside from that, another great listen, fellas.

Bobby's best has to be the PSG one, for me. First one that always comes to my mind.

Henderson nicking the ball off Mbappe there, the coward.

Was just listening to this and the hopes for Leeds while West Ham were in the process of beating them.  Not good.

Nevertheless an enjoyable listen, especially Dave's impression of Dan which is easily the best (for being actually good), and funniest, impression so far.

I tried, I really did.

No way, my Eubank impression is the best. My Buffalo Bill one was great too, that was ages ago though. I do a mean Quint as well which I'll bust out when the time is right.

I wondered for a moment if it was an actual clip of Dan from the previous Podcast, that's how good it was.

In fairness, I've had plenty of practice as I've been doing it in the group chat to wind Dan up for weeks.

Great listen as always. I can remember 2 Bobby legendary flicks, Southampton away for Mo in that orange kit, and the Newcastle one you mentioned. Intrigued on that number 7 shout.

Totally agreed with Paul's point that it 100% isn't about time wasting, it's all about breaking-up the flow of the game and stopping us playing. They can add all the time they want, it won't stop teams doing it because they can still achieve their aims even if the game is played for 120 mins.

Hahaha, you're right. Fuck knows what I was thinking!

Think it was the way he shuffled into the challenge, Henderson's "please don't meg me" tackle.

Dan also now does a great version of himself on that episode which he’s shared on the group chat a couple of times. It’s the, “Dave, Dave…” that gets me.

Think you might need to practice your Chris Eubank a bit more, from memory that sounded more like Hugo A-Go-Go from Batfink.

Still pretty funny like

Me too, with the unmistakable twang of St Helens!

Regarding the systematic time wasting/breaking up play, no way the refs will do anything about it other than add a bit of time on to the 90 minutes.  I think they like it, especially the less fit ones as it gives them multiple opportunities to take a breather.  Any change there will have to be spearheaded by the PL clubs themselves as it really is destroying the game as a spectacle.

Yeah I think it will be driven by the PL and the refs will be told to sort it out, rather than the refs take it upon themselves. I do think it will have to happen though, as its becoming more and more prevalent and the two worst teams for it are in the top 7. It's almost forgivable when its a team battling relegation, but when the team in 3rd is the worst in the country for it?

I'd like to have gone into this in more detail but those two knobheads on the pod kept hurrying me along.

Listened to the pod today while driving around and really enjoyed it some great laugh out loud moments and Dave always going back to Villa's shithousery time wasting was a joy to behold
