Klopp: The Liverpool story of Nat and Neco is not over

Jurgen Klopp is adamant that Nat Phillips and Neco Williams have not played their last game for Liverpool despite being sent on loan in January.

The defensive duo moved to Bournemouth and Fulham respectively with both clubs expected to figure prominently when it comes to the battle of promotion from the Championship to the Premier League.

With the pair unlikely to play much first team football for the Reds in the second half of the season, the decision to move them to those clubs could be something of a masterstroke as they will be regularly playing in fixtures with plenty of pressure attached which will undoubtedly make them better footballers in the long run.

There is a prevailing view that once Klopp sends a player on loan, it is a clear sign that their time at Liverpool is at a end.

The only recent exception to the rule has been Harvey Elliott who went to Blackburn to get more first team experience where he excelled which in turn saw him come back to the club and go straight into the first team before injury saw his progression halted.

While Phillips and Williams are highly unlikely to have a easy passage to the Liverpool first team if they do return, in his programme notes ahead of the FA Cup clash with Cardiff today,  Klopp has given the duo some clear hope to cling onto.

“Nat Phillips and Neco Williams will be battling for promotion from the Championship between now and May. Magnificent opportunity for both. And both Bournemouth and Fulham are very fortunate to get these two outstanding young men.

“Their Liverpool stories are not over – they are merely on pause – so I don’t want my words to feel like a farewell. But both these players have made a massive contribution to our club in recent seasons.

"The way they were day to day made us better collectively. When they played they produced the goods. I couldn’t be more grateful towards them both and I hope they show all their talent and quality in the coming days, weeks and months.

The perfect scenario would be if both Bournemouth and Fulham claimed automatic promotion as Klopp alluded to.

“When I looked at the Championship table I noticed they are pretty close together at the top. Fingers crossed both Nat and Neco will be celebrating promotion come May. They are two boys who deserve success.”

Shits gone tits up if philips plays for us again.

I disagree. I can see him returning to replace Gomez as our fourth choice CH next season.

Gomez is 100 times the player Phillips is and Gomez is our 4th best CB. If this happens then we are in trouble.  There’s a reason Phillips is no where near our match day squad and it’s simply because he’s no where near the level we want to be.

I know football fans love a cult hero, but we also need to be realistic and remove emotion at times. The only reason Phillips played for us was because of an unprecedented injury crisis at centre back. And with that we stumbled our way to 3rd in the league with lot of thanks to collapses by Leicester and Chelsea. That is not where we want to be.

Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s Man Utd finished ahead of us. Man U-fucking-td.

Phillips is not anywhere near good enough for a team/squad wanting to win Leagues and European Cups. That’s a fact easily proven by the fact he almost ever makes our squad, never mind our team and was happily loaned out to a lower league side. He’ll be sold in the summer. I’ll bet any amount of money on that.

Yeah I think Gomez won’t be happy with being a 4th choice centre half and he’ll move to a team where he’ll start every week when for.

I don’t think Phillips is that great so no emotion involved here. As above I just don’t see Gomez ever settling being 4th choice, and we won’t spend money bringing another centre half in.

I don’t agree at all. If Gomez goes I think there’s no question he’d be replaced. He’ll still have 2 years left in his contract this summer so we’d get very good money for him and it’d be reinvested no question. Klopp will never want a repeat of last season.

Origi spent a long time on loan and is still at the club and has featured and scored in some memorable fixtures since too. Being on loan isnt necessary the end for everybody.

That's because no-one wanted to pay what we thought he was worth.

His career here was dead until that Everton winner.

Yet he got on the pitch and the rest is history. Like I said,it doesn't necessarily mean the end for everybody. Most but not all.
