Agger: Rodgers doesn't think I'm good enough

Daniel Agger’s future at Liverpool is looking increasingly uncertain after the Danish captain reportedly claimed that “the manager doesn’t think I’m good enough”.

When quizzed about his Anfield future by the Danish press, Agger is said to have responded: “I don’t know. That’s up to the manager. I can’t go and put myself on the team sheet.

“It definitely wasn’t great (to be left out of the games against Chelsea and Manchester City), but I don’t make the decisions. I think it is because the manager doesn’t think that I’m good enough. I’m no one’s third choice.”

Agger has frequently been linked with a move away from the club since Brendan Rodgers arrived in 2012, but he was made vice-captain following the retirement of Jamie Carragher last summer and his ‘third choice’ comment doesn’t really stack up. While he had to share playing time with expensive new arrival Mamadou Sakho last season, had he managed to stay fit then the chances are he would have retained his place in the side.

The popular Dane did find himself on the bench for extended periods during the season but usually only after he had originally lost his place through injury (the exception being when he was dropped following a 3-3 draw at Goodison Park).

Agger himself made that very point when speaking to the club’s official website following the final game of the season, ironically after he had been recalled to the side at the expense of Sakho. “Personally it’s been a frustrating season, most of all because of some stupid injuries” he said. “The only positive I can take from it is that I’ve not been out of the team because I’ve played bad - it’s because I’ve been injured - and then afterwards it’s been difficult to get back in because the team is winning, so I can’t do anything about that.”

With Rodgers seemingly unwilling to pair two left footers together at the heart of his defence, Agger and Sakho have been vying for the same position all season and competition for places is set to increase further with the Reds looking to add another high profile centre back to the squad this summer. Southampton’s Dejan Lovren has been strongly linked and the Croatian usually played as the left sided central defender for the Saints last season, meaning he could just as easily partner Martin Skrtel as replace him.

Agger would therefore appear to be most likely casualty of any summer defensive shake up, but even if Rodgers wishes to keep him he will not be able to guarantee him a place in the side and it is now looking increasingly likely that the 30 year old will end his 8 year stay on Merseyside.

What do you think, should Agger be first choice or is it in everyone’s best interests for him to move on this summer?

I think Agger is a really good player, but as soon as we signed Sakho that signalled the end for him. You don't spend £16m on a relatively young left sided centreback if he isn't who the manager wants there mid/long term.

Agger's injury record, age, wages, and general standing in the game, dictate that he isn't going to be third choice centre back here. Especially when he could easily start for Barcelona every week.

I don't particularly want him to go, and I doubt he does either really, but it probably makes sense for him, and the club.

Not just this, but the way he faces up to opposition defenders. Yes, he will get some stuff right, and he will look good on occasion, but overall, Agger flatters to deceive. He is no longer a top quality central defender, if indeed he ever was.

Carragher, Agger, hypvia, Henchoz, Hansen, Lawrenson, Gillespie, Wright, Sakho,

Agger comes last in that list.

Agreed, Ive never rated him as a top cb and don't think he fufilled his potential here.

He had a very good season the year he scored against Chelsea in the champs league but since then he hasn't done it consistently.

Hes had a good run of a few games but it always ends with an injury, Ive wanted him sold for a few years and don't know why it hasn't happened when the club knows he cant be relied on to stay fit.

Also on Dan Ive held back saying this before as it may look like an attack on him but he is a funny character.

Anyone who has seen an interview by him knows what Im talkng about, he speaks like he is as high as a kite and I don't think its down to speaking a different language.

It actually makes me warm to him a bit as he is a bit quirky and I know others must have noticed but maybe didn't want to say as it looks like an insult on him.

I think he just hates that side of being a professional footballer.

Good point its probably just down to him being uncomfortable in front of a camera or something, as I said its not a diss to him or anything he just comes across very different to most footballers when you see him interviewed.

He's a good footballer when he's at his best, he's not a particularly good defender though. Some parts are fine, others are pretty poor. Add to that the fact that he's losing pace, probably due to his horrendous injury record, and that he's getting others, then you've got a defender who's ageing, slowing and not very good at defending.

WIll agree with the ageing and slowing, but still think he's a good defender for the most part. His injury record is a big problem as well though, like has been said often. As much as I don't like to say it, maybe it is best if Barca get him, at least he'll still be able to play for one of the best clubs around, and he might even find things a lot better there than he expected.

That's if their new manager even wants him of course, and I don't think we have any idea if that's the case do we? If he's after letting go of Fabregas, Sanchez and Pedro, it has to be doubtful if what he sees as his vision for the team even includes Agger.

Oh and Coates! If we don't want him we should really let him go. He's wasted sat around on a subs bench. People have given him stick, and maybe he deserves a bit, but he's never had the chance to get settled. He'll probably do well if he can get regular games, but will never do well here or anywhere else if he's played so rarely.

But he can't handle strong players, players running at him, or deal with set-peices. Not very well anyway. He's decent in possession, or was, and he used to drive out from the back, but not so much now. I do like Dan Agger, I've always liked him, but he's in the declining phase of his career. If he stays around in the squad, fine, if he goes for decent money, that's fine too.

Why would you want him to stay in the squad if you think he can't handle strong players, players running at him, or deal with set pieces, is no longer decent in possession, and rarely drives out from the back?

It does rather sound like you think he's shite.

Because I think he's experienced, which is something we lack in the squad in general, I think he's still decent in possession as long as we're not under great pressure, and I think he's a decent option to have as a squad player. I don't think he's shite, but I don't think he should be an automatic starter in a league where we're often targeted by big fellas taking down long balls. His man marking isn't good enough for that. Get away with it in Spain, for sure. Like I say, if he stays that's fine, he's perfectly able to play part of the squad. If he goes, that's fine too.

I think he's like a lot of players we've had recently. As fans, we seem to have become complacent with ok players because they carry a certain name. Lucas, Agger, Skrtel, Johnson, and others of that level. We seem to like them, but if we look honestly they're not top class players now, if they ever were. It's like we're so used to having a Ford Mondeo that when somebody says we should upgrade we bang on about how it gets us from A to B and how reliable it has been. Great. Sell it and get a Audi Sturridge or a Ferrari Suarez and then see if we want to go back to our Ford Bellamy or Vauxhall Aspas.

I think he can handle most things when he's playing well, but maybe his consistency has dropped off over the last season or so. There's probably a lot of reasons for it but I don't want to seem like I'm making excuses for him. If he wasn't so plagued with injuries maybe things would have gone a lot better.

Injury has blighted his career.

On his day he was fine, but I agree with stringy that his best days are probably behind him and his injury record will only worsen with age.

Soldado at Anfield blew him away? he might of run past him once, but it ended 4-0 and Soldado was completely ineffective and marked out of the entire game. It's hardly a stick to beat Agger with, is it?

Yup.. Vidic got skinned once.. He's such a shit defender.

The problem is Sakho hasn't really put forward a strong enough case for a starting position, despite the exorbitant cost. We generally look more solid in defence with Agger in the team and that's a bit of a concern. I understand that pace, strength and athleticism are really good assets to have, and Sakho have those in abundance, but Hyypia was one of the best defenders I've seen to play for us, and he was slower than a snail.

Not costing us goals is a good case.

If the other defenders did the same we'd be laughing.

I guess if Agger is sold the new player will compete with Sakho to play alongside Skrtel. That way we can see if Sakho can consolidate during his second season.

If he continues to drop deep and take risks at the back i think he'll be on his bike back to France. Hopefully he will prove me wrong to doubt his ability.

Lovren seems to be the one linked and he can play right or left sided, plus should be able to compliment both players, as he is more of an organiser and like Agger mops up.  Leaving Skrtel and Sakho to be the aggressors when they play.

Sakho didn't drop any deeper than our other four centre backs this season.  He also had the best pass completion stats, so he clearly wasn't taking risks at the back.  If so, the others were taking more risks.  But a 92.5% pass completion rate, suggests, that's bollocks.

92.5% is just a number. It doesn't contextualize what he's doing with the ball. With respect i don't think his passing statistics are relevant to the point i made.

Like i said on the other thread there's a lot to like about Sakho but he seems a bit inconsistent? Veering from excellent to looking a touch out of his depth from game to game. It's probably too early to judge whether he is the long term answer?

Mate, a few people just don't seem to like him. For whatever reason, they've decided to not like him. Not once has anybody ever said anything meaningful about his problems passing and backed it up with anything at all. I don't think it has anything to do with his passing, I think it has to do with certain people not liking the way he looks when he passes.

Given that it's his first season, he's been very good for us. He can play, and he's stronger and faster than our other CBs. He will improve next year, and he will be first choice.

The interesting conversation is about the other CB slot. I suspect if Louvren does come in, we'll see him play in Skrtels position, with the odd game deputising for Sakho if he's injured or needs resting.

By dropping deep and picking the wrong pass? There must be a reason why Rodgers was switching haphazardly between Agger and Sakho, particularly when it came to the potentially title deciding Toon game on the last day.

Isn't Lovren left footed?

Playing two left footers at CB isn't allowed.

Not that I'd want him to play ahead of Skrtel anyway.
