PODCAST: Jordan Henderson joins the Saudi League

The captain has deserted the ship. Jordan Henderson is no longer a Red after ending his stellar 12 year stay at Anfield in ignominious fashion by joining Steven Gerrard at *checks notes* Al Ettifaq.

Hendo's former number one fan Chris Smith is joined by Julian Richards, Stu Montagu and TLW Editor Dave Usher as the lads share their thoughts on a move that a month ago seemed unthinkable.

The conversation then broadens out to include what should now happen with the captaincy, Fabinho's impending departure and how many players do we need to bring in to fill the void. Plus there's a bit on the pre-season action as Dave and Jules clash yet again over Darwin Nunez.

Don’t tell me you’ve never read one of his posts about his own footballing ability???!!!???

An excellent point. So counting those posts, that makes the other one the 745th most dishonest post on this platform, EVER.

One thing that wasn't really covered enough though was just how poor Henderson was last season.

When he was playing twice a week he couldn't do it and had some stinkers. When his minutes were managed I thought he looked much better. First half of the season we had no fit midfielders though and he had to play too much. I agree his best football might have been in the world cup though.

He could have been transitioned into the Milner role but clearly his wallet and his ego got in the way of that.

Skilled worker gets huge pay day for his last contract.  Good luck to him.  If I had the chance to leave this fucking shithole of a country I'd take it.  I get the criticism but the outrage is pathetic.

Its a good deal for the club as well IMO as he is clearly on the wane having only recently signed a long contract.  We'll miss his leadership, from all the messages from players he was clearly a well loved person within the dressing room but after last seasons shitshow the team needed a big reset and this is just part of it.

I think in time this is the way most people will see it. You’re just a little ahead on that front.

He was already on a huge payday. That huge payday was,in part, made up by impressionable people paying him for it with money they barely had. They even believed it when he said discriminated people shouldnt be discriminated against and poorly paid workers who save lives every day should be paid more. The first chance he gets he goes to a country with the opposite view to that because he was offered an even bigger payday. He's been shown up to be a cunt.

To paraphrase a rock band 'Dont put your life in the hands of a footballer,he'll throw it all away...for more money!

A point on the next Captain and I agree with Chris and think it should be Robbo.

He's captain of Scotland and they are more competitive now than they have been in twenty years.

Has to be Van Dijk.

If we bring in a quality left sided CB and continue with the 3223- Robbo might be on the bench a fair bit.

To be fair to him, he is never going to be the powerhouse or the driving factor in our midfield anymore, hes past his best in this league, so why not go for a cash cow move to end his career?

I couldnt give a stuff about his lgbt agenda, this is a sport, not politics.

People forget how short a football players career is in reality, aside the fact they earn a week what most earn in years.

Thanks for what you did, move on, end of.

Got himself an MBE by inserting himself into 'politics' though didn't he. That's why he's getting shit whereas no-one is that arsed about Fabinho or Bobby for example.

Not that short a career either, considering he's been earning millions every year for a decade.

Have missed the podcasts so selfishly, @dave u can we have another one for the Fab departure (including thoughts on the current state of our transfer window)?

May be a bit duplicative but saves me from listening to the anfield wrap on my morning walks.

Who was the comedian on here who said that Paul Konchesky was better than Souness? Was it The Guest? It was somebody who was clown shoesing on about progression. It was magnificent stuff whoever it was

Henderson is a million miles from being our greatest captain.

He’s also a million miles from being the villain he is being painted as by some

Equally, he’s a million miles from being a paragon of virtue

But he definitely has some £millions in the bank

or something

Yep.  Though it's a belter to suggest he's our greatest captain.

There was a time he was persona non grata too, after acting in a way that had undone everything he ever did. Quite a long time in fact.

Until the last few weeks, I'd have said it was fair to put Henderson in the discussion for what he won, what he represented, and how important he was to the manager and his teammates. Obviously now it doesn't stand up. Especially for us fans. Time will tell, I suppose.

Yes he was, it was the Sun stuff, which is fair enough, but as a player, Captain and leader Henderson wasn’t even in the same galaxy as Souness never mind better than him.

well it’s a good thing we’re allowed to have opinions, eh, as there’d be no point having a podcast.

Playing ability on it's own does not justify being 'the greatest' captain,in my view. Henderson is/was up there,if you wanted to indulge in that type of thing.

Souness is still a cunt for me,great player, but what he did is still unforgiveable even decades later.
