Saw this today, was a comment in reply to a Guardian story about how 'cool' Naples is: Another article that I read with a sinking heart as a Naples resident. We don't appreciate those descriptions of our city as 'cool', 'edgy', 'gritty' that are made by tourists (or 'travellers', same thing - a body is a body). Largely instagram- and airbnb- induced, alarming increase in tourist numbers in the last 2 years have seen the very quick death of our city and culture, which was born and grew due to its isolation and marginalisation. Largely like a coral reef, the more that come to visit, the quicker its devastation. We don't need gentrification, which has happened so quickly that we are reeling, and what was once 'Napoli' can possibly be already considered largely dead, or quickly disappearing, what is left. Our prosperity will not grow from media and increased visitor numbers. Why? It is obvious. You are coming to visit and stay in one of the nearly 9000 airbnbs, 5 years ago largely inexistent, that one of those Napolitans lived in until recently. We can't find places to live. Our local stores are gone, in their place the same hipster-bullshit bars and souvenir shops that you find anywhere in the world. Inequality in on such a drastic rise it is terrifying. Those tourist dollars you say are so beneficial are more than 95 percent undeclared, falling into the pockets of the already wealthy. Our communities are dying due to residents, who have often lived in the same street for generations, being pushed out. Our Sri-Lankan migrants have all been thrown of of their homes in the Spanish Quarter, now the 'epitomy of cool' to be rented out as 'authentic Napolitan Bassi'. Your visits are increasing our gentrification, which has destroyed the fabric of our city and culture faster than any other city in the last 20 years, even faster than in Portugal. The average Napolitan lives on less than 1000 euros per month. A 30sqm apartment now goes for 800 euros per month, which would have been 250 just a few years ago. Our 'arrangiarsi' is not an interesting and idiosyncratic cultural artifact, the backdrop for an instagrammable adventure in the newest 'unexplored' metropolis. It was a culture of getting by the best we could. We were unpretentious and doing our best, despite the difficulties. We do have our community, but that is easily overridden by greed and corruption, yes that same corruption that is so romanticised in articles like this. I am not against tourism by any measure. We need new blood as humans, it is healthy. We had a healthy tourism in previous years, largely fueled by what is demonised as the 'bad' tourism, but is actually the least damaging. Grey-haired cruise ship tourist who would eat in a tourist restaurant, older quieter well-travelled europeans who came to see and left, leaving little of their presence. Just two years ago I started seeing the 'cooler' identikit travellers, and we knew time was up. This is because it is that latter category are those that change it, that need to have an 'authentic' experience, that come into our quarters, wanted to share, to talk about Naples, about how 'cool and undiscovered' was. Now, instead of seeing 1 tourist per 30 Napolitans in the high season just a few years ago, the proportion is completely inverted. We can't accomodate this, and we are losing our city. Though I know this comment will make people angry, it is an appeal. If you like Naples and Napolitans, please don't come. We are drowning.
