I know what you mean but you need to differentiate between evolutionary scientists and professional evolutionary arguers. For some reason Darwinism has become the bludgeon the latter beat creationists with and vice versa; it's become a symbol and hence no ground can be given, even ground good science says you must abandon is defended. Consequently it's over-defended and we end up, like you say, with all the same kind of rhetorical shenanigans the creationists use. Most professional arguers only understand evolution to a conceptual level anyway and supplement this with a checklist of refutations of common creationist BS. If you want genuine insight on the current state you need to go to the textbooks.
