  1. A favourite of mine as well. One of those guys who stayed under the radar for the most part, but has had a long long career. And many great songs. Sam Stone Hello in There Paradise etc I agree with the recommendations above as well.
  2. Been off the bottle for quite a few years now. I managed to drink my entire quote between the ages of 18 and 25. I'd love to be a social drinker, as the first couple generally turned me into the person I wished I was, but I was never able/willing to stop at a couple.
  3. Looking at it, my take is he said "Yeah, I called you a fucking black cunt, you fucking knobhead." John Terry calls Anton Ferdinand "a f*cking black c*nt" But whether he was confirming he'd called him that, or replying derisively, I can't tell.
  4. Didn't take long to develop some genuine hatred for Chelsea. City don't have Mourinho to stoke the fires, but I'm sure I'll be hating them too, soon enough if they win/buy everthing in sight. Not the same deep-seated irreducible eternal hatred as I have for the Scum, of course. But hatred just the same.
  5. I wonder if Tevez enjoyed it? I thought they'd really miss him this season. They don't miss him at all. Berbatov not anywhere near the pitch, either, though he led the league (with Tevez) in scoring last season.
  6. Doing some reading on the Bush/Cheney presidency. "One Percent Doctrine" by Ron Suskind A look at Cheney's approach to foreign policy: "If there's a one percent chance of something bad happening, we have to do something about it. Pre-emptively." Gives some excellent insight into why they attacked Iraq. Speaking of: "Plan of Attack" by Bob Woodward Basically a blow-by-blow of how Bush/Cheney went to war against Iraq, starting their preparations in November 2001 (if not before 911). It's good for the basic details, but not much analysis. I hope to find a couple more books to do some comparison. Listened to "The Spanish Civil War: A Very Brief Introduction" by Helen Graham One of a series of "Brief Intros" to all sorts of subjects, published by the Oxford Uni Press. I've read/listened to a dozen or so, and they're all excellent. Detailed, but accessible to a dummy like me.
  7. They'll blame it all on Evans. But they're shite. Particularly Jones.
  8. Great to see Stanhope getting such rave reviews. He hardly gets a mention over here in North America. I wonder how the world would react if Gervais incorporated something like this into his act?
  9. A polite "fuck off" to both Evra and Ferguson.
  10. I'm sorry, but any society that has conditioned it's people to avoid coming to the aid of a helpless child, without any threat of harm to themselves, has some serious problems.
  11. Some sort of promotion for the Ashmolean. It is a little odd. Posting pics is easy. Google image search, then right-click on the pic you want and choose "view image info". Copy the "Location" url in the pop-up box, then come back to your post, click on the little icon with the mountains in it, paste the url into the pop-up box, and that's it.
  12. Milk Story of one of the first openly gay politicians in the US. Assasinated by a fellow-city councillor in San Francisco. Well-made, too long, and boring. 6/10 Try the documentary "The Times of Harvey Milk" instead. Well-made, compact, and emotive as hell. 9/10
  13. Forth for me as well, (though I love them all). Because of the ending. The anti-punchline of all time.
  14. No relegation, then a play-off system. Terrible ideas, both. Other than the NFL, every league over here in NA plays hundreds of games that mean nothing. The "regular season" is for revenue generation, the play-offs are when the competition starts.
  15. If there was a conspiracy, Ferguson would have been ranting and raving before he left the pitch, and he'd still be ranting and raving. And I can't see him playing this kind of game in any case. Evra, on the other hand, I can.
  16. We didn't give up many chances yesterday, against a team who usually create quite a few. Is that down to their formation/team selection? Gerrard pitching in at the back? Adam suddenly discovering how to defend?
  17. Great finish. Spuds reminding me of Arsenal at the back at the moment. Speaking of, and the table aside, disappointing to see King go off yet again.
  18. I was in the bakery Friday afternoon, and I hear the cashier say to the person in front of me in line: "I'm surprised to see you here". I realized it was my local doctor. I then realized that in the last 15 years I'd rarely ever seen him anywhere but at his clinic or at the local hospital. I live in a small town, and though we get locums in, for the past few years he's been the only regular doctor in town. A busy man. Imagine having an entire town as your practice, from birth to death, and everything in between. Plenty of people worthy of admiration out there. It's just that many of them aren't recognized, or not looking for recognition.
  19. "Riding Giants" About the development of big-wave surfing. Similar to mountain climbing: people doing crazy dangerous shit for no apparent reason. Ten hangs out of ten.
