  1. Actually I'll go against the tide here and say that I don't believe that referee's are consciously biased, they are biased though. I think it was Howard Webb (I stand to be corrected) who said that they are all to a man shit scared of Demento and the behemoth that is Manchester United. They just seem to instinctively favour the mancs particularly any close call always goes for them. When it's a decision against the mancs they often hesitate even on occasion when it's blatant. What else should we expect when Ferguson is by and large allowed to run riot even to the point of undermining a referee's career a couple of seasons ago?
  2. Well at least we have a manager who is prepared to make substantial changes early in a match but going for a back three against a physical side that thrives on crosses is well, brave.
  3. He is a bit, time to throw on that extra forward we bought in the summer.
  4. Yep but today will be a lesson for the lad, will keep his feet firmly grounded.
  5. Everton quicker and more physical, we can't cope with their pressing game and are being dominated in midfield. Sahin just isn't on the pace, we need Shelvey on to add a bit of bite in midfield. Inexperience of our youngsters is showing here.
  6. Exactly, keep this as a football match rather than a scrap and we'll win this. Poor keeping from Jones but equally poor defending to leave a player with so much space on the edge of the box.
  7. True but there's very little corroborating evidence beyond the gospels which in turn were written by individuals who were not around at the time and therefore even if Jesus did exist we're only learning about him through hearsay evidence, a friend of a friend told me. The bible is incorrect on several assertions, christian historians often point to Luke as evidence stating his credentials as a historian. The very basis of Luke's census, a critical historical event, is now largely dismissed outside of the christian community. The Romans kept very detailed records of these events. Beyond christian historians it certainly isn't accepted entirely that he existed, personally I believe an individual upon which the legend of Jesus was formed probably did exist. We're not dealing with a period of history that is entirely unrecorded, Jesus was clearly not part of the ruling class but he certainly was a celebrity according to the gospels with thousands turning up to see him perform. It seems a little strange how little 3rd party reference to these events recorded at the time or in the decades afterwards we can find. Ultimately belief in Jesus sprung up in the numerous christian sects that formed after his death ultimately leading to the formation of the bible which most likely was in fact a political act attempting to unite the numerous sects. We've since identified numerous gospels that were omitted from the bible.
  8. No he hasn't in all fairness. Don't think they've finished lower than 8th for the last five or six years and his net spend has returned a profit for the club over many of those seasons. As with the FA Cup semi there's just the suspicion that he's the sort of manager that's good at getting the most out of limited resources rather being able to step up a level. Oh and the 'people's club' bullshit still gets right on my tits.
  9. Will be interesting to see if Ferdinand backs down, if he doesn't then it might become a bit tricky for Ferguson. Whilst I wouldn't claim to be Ferdinand's biggest fan, it does seem to be rather bizarre that a campaign led by the FA is basically expected to be mandatory. Ferdinand as a black man and relative of a recent victim of racism at the hands of Chelsea's captain according to the FA might well be within his rights to reject the FA's claims and campaign given the feeble nature of the punishment handed down to Terry both from the FA and Chelsea. Terry sum punishiment adds up to little more than a couple of week wages and a short ban, that's hardly kicking racism out of football as the FA state. It does seem to be rather questionable for Ferguson to order a black player to take part in an anti racism campaign the player clearly has legitimate reservations about.
  10. All very true relating to our spending and we could have spent the funds far more wisely, in fact not rushing to spend the money and taking a longer term view would have been wiser. However we were not and are still not in the position of being able to attract the likes of Oscar, Mata or Hazard with considerably more successful teams on offer to them. Despite our lowly league position for the first couple of months of this season it doesn't feel like previous recent seasons in that there is genuine promise. It's going to be a very long and slow process. We have a youth system that rivals the best in Europe now producing genuine talent and a manager more than willing to make use of it and from what I've seen to date who wants to play football the right way. I wouldn't describe our performances as 'brilliant' this season, 'promising' is more appropriate. Ironically though if we'd taken the points from the games against City and United as we should have done we'd actually be right up there already.
  11. It looked like he did from the close up but when you see the replay from side on you can see how far his head and neck get sent backwards. It's actually those sort of awkward contacts that can cause quite a bit of injury particularly as Kirkland clearly didn't see it coming. When we see an impact coming say from a punch we instinctively brace to absorb the impact. As others have stated he's also made out of glass so a passing breeze could cause injury let alone a double slap in the face. I recall working in London a few years ago and running into a large number of Leeds supporters on their way to Spurs. They were busily destroying the tube and attacking anyone they came across.
  12. Because he's British and our xenophobic media quite openly hold the view that no one dives like them dirty foreigners. When a British player hits the ground there is always mitigation assisted by temporary blindness from the media. Suarez is now basically a pantomime villain, biting another player, the handball at the World Cup and obviously the charges from the FA. Final straw was Ferguson declaring him a 'diver', the sheep in the media will duly buy into anything whiskey nose says. The reality is that he does go down far too easily playing for penalties and free kicks in exactly the same way every other professional footballer irrespective of nationality does. Over the past couple of seasons I haven't seen an attempt at cheating from Suarez as blatant as for example Ashley Young (twice) or Gareth Bale.
  13. Unlikely to happen but it would be amusing to see Roy trying to talk his way out of a 0-0. It would probably be the point that he turned on the squad and I assume disowned them.
  14. Aquilani for me, there's probably not a huge difference in financial terms between the loss we'll take for Aquilani or Carrol when it's all settled but Aquilani has made no contribution whatsoever. Could we not just have an extra option on the poll stating our transfer policy circa 2008-present? Our transfer activity has been truly and consistently appalling for the last 4-5 years. The back end of Rafa's reign followed by Hodgson and then the disaster of Kenny/Commolli's splurge. Aquilani, Cole, Poulsen, Keane, Carrol, Downing, Henderson, Adam.... Is it any wonder were knocking around the bottom half of the Premiership hoping that a talented but inexperienced manager can turn things around?
  15. Our £35 million striker is in London and our recently purchased non scoring £10 million striker was on the bench today and we chose to throw on Joe Cole. Hardly a surprise it ended up 0-0.
  16. Oh well that's ok then, pity he didn't mention it at the time rather than leaving it 9 years to give this perfectly reasonable explanation.
  17. The tone is completely different though and the underlying sympathy for Terry is pathetic. Suarez was vilified before, during and after the FA hearing.
  18. Well if we wanted evidence of how xenophobic football and the media are we now have it. Terry is convicted of making racist remarks and there's barely a murmur from the media despite there being clear video evidence. Apparently because of his not guilty verdict there is a sense of injustice about this ruling. Listening to Pat Nevin describe the judgement as 'unsettling' and 'not quite right' on the radio was amazing. Apparently the FA shouldn't now be finding someone guilty on the basis of one man's word against another... This will be brushed under the carpet with the minimal amount of fuss and a genuine showing of sympathy for Terry. Obviously if a foreign player allegedly makes remarks that can be interpreted as racist in Spanish to another foreign player he should be strung up.
  19. Pretty much this, prior to the internet you wouldn't see a league table printed in the media until mid October. It's clearly not been a great start and the issues we have have particularly a lack of goal threat are pretty clear for all to see but it's the next five games or so that will define whether we have a serious problem this season. Winning and losing are both habits, I just hope we break the latter before we end up something like 4 or 5 points out of 30.
  20. That's the truth, we can point out the utterly terrible decisions but as long as we fail to take advantage of long periods of being on top in games we leave ourselves wide open to factors beyond our control.
