  1. But even the deepest lying midfielder needs to be able to initiate possession, in fact that is supposed to be his role, something that Lucas is completely inept at. I cringe every time he starts his "passing sequence", which usually ends up with a back pass to Reina and a clearance. Any midfielder in a side which is supposed to dominate possession for a majority of the games, needs to be assertive and show purpose with his passing. There is a reason why Lucas "looks good" in big games, and that is because you don't see him with the ball as much. He's useless with it 90% of the time.
  2. So Lucas is not supposed to be involved with passing the ball and distributing it? Seeing that he plays in the centre of midfield, you'd expect him to contribute in that area. This is what annoys me, this mentality that a defensive midfielder is just a CB playing high up the pitch with absolutely no responsibility to our possession of the ball. It's wrong. And besides, even defensively today he's done nothing and let players get by him easily. He's no Mascherano, not even close.
  3. Bottom line though, he's a cunt.
  4. Provided it's true, we are going to win fuck all for the next five years. Let it sink in. Embrace it.
  5. You mean the one and only game they played together in the middle when we had a great first half in which we should have been 3/4-0 up?
  6. Eden Hazard is the next big thing. Move heaven and earth to get him.
  7. Jonjo Shelvey will develop into a very good player and prove the doubters wrong. I'm looking forward to seeing him get his chances this season.
  8. He's great in the two aspects of the game which made this club famous: Pass and move. His problem comes from confidence, he seems rushed in his touches, when he has more time on the ball than he lets himself sometimes. I like him and I think he'll be a great player for us. Contrary to some, I can definitely see him becoming a good goalscorer. His timing and movement into the box just needs some more polishing.

I think he is easily better than Skrtel, he's better than Carragher who's not at his peak (love the man but we need to start thinking long term), and he is more reliable than Agger in terms of fitness. If he comes in, it will be straight into the first team IMO.
  10. He's quickly become one of my favourite players. I love his style of play and I love to watch the ball at his feet. If he improves a little more defensively, he'll be a great player for years to come. He'll be worth plenty of goals for us, both in set pieces and in open play.
  11. It doesn't matter what you call it or how you describe a second striker, the basis is having two central midfielders and not three. All teams with two central midfielders need to have the ability to add a third man into the middle in some form. Whether it comes from a forward dropping deep to initiate play, or a wide man drifting inside, it doesn't matter, but they don't play with three central midfielders and it can be successful.
  12. Last season, when Suarez came to the team, he played up front ON HIS OWN in a 4-3-3 while Carroll was injured. He was the lone striker, he had the freedom because he didn't need to defend much from that position. Funny that you mention Messi because he's another one who clearly plays as a striker and Guardiola moving him from the right sided forward role in a 4-3-3 into the middle was the catalyst to him stepping up to another level and becoming the monster that he's been in the last couple of years. You seem to think that 4-4-2 must be "rigid" and "stifles" the midfield. It's simply not true. A second striker is allowed to be able to dribble and drift wide too. There's a big difference between playing up front and drifting out wide to playing out wide in a 4-3-3. Massive massive difference in terms of freedom and defensive responsibility and the need to cover ground without the ball.
  13. One of the front two always sits deeper in a 4-4-2. Rooney is not a central midfielder. The main difference between a 4-4-2 and a 4-3-3 is the extra central midfielder, that's what defines the formation. The fact, and it is a fact, that the mancs have been successful playing with just two central midfielders in most games without having major problems defensively is solid proof that this notion that 4-4-2 "can't work" and hasn't worked since 1999 is simply not true.
  14. Do people never watch the mancs play? Current reigning champions with a home record of 18 wins and 1 draw, starting 2/3 of their games in a 4-4-2? I'll be willing to put out every starting line up of them last season in the league if you want. What exactly do you call a front pairing of Berbatov/Hernandez with Rooney? What exactly is Nani and Ashley Young out wide with two strikers up front? Is it still 4-3-3 somehow? They've been playing with three CM's in big games, no doubt, but they've been breaking teams down with a 4-4-2 on a consistent basis.
  15. I think Henderson was bought for this role, having him in the team compliments Downing on the other flank and allows us to potentially play 4-4-2 pretty well while still being able to maintain three midfielders in case the opposition tries to outnumber us in the middle. Kuyt is also an option there, and we might see Gerrard playing there when he comes back. This team needs to be built around Suarez, moving him out wide would be counterproductive.
  16. I disagree. I think that's a terrible way to use both Suarez and Carroll. There's a difference between playing up front and drifting wide than starting out wide, even if it's a 4-3-3. Suarez needs the freedom to go wherever he wants without having any defensive responsibilities covering a flank, which he would have if he played there. Kenny, from the moment Suarez was signed, has refused to put him wide in any capacity. 4-4-2 is how Kenny sees us playing with Suarez and Carroll. Gerrard will have to fit in it. I'd rather get the best out of Suarez than get the best out of Gerrard right now.
  17. I'm basing this on the fact that Kenny has never put Suarez out wide. Not even once since he has signed.
  18. We're going to stick with 4-4-2 when Gerrard's back, whether Gerrard plays at RM or CM remains to be seen, but there's one thing I'm pretty sure of, and that is Suarez' role as a forward. Not wide, not pseudo-wide, inside-wide or any of that sort.
  19. I can see him getting a 5 match ban, nothing more unfortunately.
